08:09 | <jannyboy[m]> Good Day , i have two servers running ltsp for 2 different clases, trying to easy the load. both has dhcp , i use router to make them communicate so that i can rsync data across. which graphic user interface or webbase i can use to control the user profile. I tried to use clea os (cent os) as domain controller i failed. 1 printers are showing while the other one are not. How can i fix that Goop people .

08:19 | <alkisg> I'm not sure what you're asking. You want to apply something like Microsoft Windows user profiles to your users? How is that related to LTSP?
| |
08:19 | (good day!)
| |
08:19 | jannyboy: ^
| |
08:23 | <jannyboy[m]> what know if is that possible with Ltsp clients
| |
08:23 | <alkisg> Did I understand what you're asking? You want user profiles like microsoft windows?
| |
08:24 | To enforce wallpapers, security settings etc?
| |
08:24 | <jannyboy[m]> yes
| |
08:25 | <alkisg> OK, of course this is possible with LTSP, but it's not at all related to LTSP. It's like asking "how to calculate an average on calc? I'm asking because I'm using libreoffice on ltsp"
| |
08:25 | There are default and mandatory gsettings, there's documentation about that in gnome,
| |
08:26 | and ubuntu has created a new service that uses active directory to apply policies for users
| |
08:26 | You can read either or both of these documentation sources and see
| |
08:27 | <jannyboy[m]> great thank you , i hv been failing for 2 months , was thinking its not possible. let me give time
| |
08:27 | <alkisg> This is the gnome documentation: https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/dconf/SystemAdministrators
| |
08:27 | There are lockdowns etc there
| |
08:28 | And this is the Ubuntu documentation: https://ubuntu.com/blog/new-active-directory-integration-features-in-ubuntu-22-04-part-2-group-policy-objects
| |
08:28 | About active directory administrative templates and group policy objects
| |
08:31 | <jannyboy[m]> 👍️👍️👍️👍️

08:33 | <David[m]1> Good morning, since I got such a helpful answer here last time I am seeking your help one more time. What exactly does LOCAL_SWAP in ltsp.conf mean? Respectively: Is there a way to speed ltsp up using a local hard disk?
| |
08:34 | <alkisg> Morning David, if you do have a local swap partition on the clients it'll be used
| |
08:35 | In general (non-ltsp specific), swap doesn't speed things up. But when a program or operating system would crash because "out of ram", swap saves the day by making things SLOWER
| |
08:35 | Because then it start swapping RAM to disk and vice-versa
| |
08:35 | It's on by default, you don't need to set it unless you want to disable it
| |
08:36 | LTSP in general should have similar speed to local installations; if that's not the case, it needs troubleshooting (usually on the network part)
| |
08:36 | <David[m]1> thanks for your answer! That's good to know. In this case we will keep the disks in the PCs and make them swap only.
| |
08:37 | <alkisg> How many clients did you say you have?
| |
08:37 | <David[m]1> alkisg: We are planning to have about 10 clients.
| |
08:37 | <alkisg> OK, a single gigabit port on the server should be enough for them
| |
08:38 | If you can spare a second one and do bonding, it'll be even faster
| |
08:41 | <David[m]1> thanks for your answers! They were very helpful.
