<torbjorn>
Hyperbyte: i dont want users to be bale to be able to access local usb storage media
13:45
I discovered something odd.. Im trying to use an old laptop as thin client, if I have its local hard drive in it, it boots fine, if I take out the hard drive, it only gets to loading initrd...... and then reboots
13:45
<muppis>
torbjorn, do you take it physically out or just disabled it?
13:45

physically
13:45

I.e. the dots, "loading vmlinuz......."

it now says that it's missing a vmlinuz file
15:33
witch is there
15:35
ok for now it's not ltsp problem
15:35
thanks for the tips
15:36
can i test if nbd is working correct too ?

15:57
witch for me was ok, because tftpd-hpa is run with root permissions
15:58
changing to 644 fixed the problem
15:59
ltsp-update-kernels just copy the kernels from the /opt/ltsp/ dirs, right ?
16:00
right
16:01
<alkisg>
If you have a new kernel in an old ubuntu version, then you need a newer ltsp-update-image code
16:01
(or to just manually update the permissions after each kernel upgrade)

i'm gonna forget to do it manualy :)

if i need to remote connect to a client computer i should have vinagre as localapp right?
16:22
from LTSP server to LTSP client
16:23
or i just need like edubuntu the Thin Client Manager?
16:24
<alkisg>
The client needs only to activate his vino-server, if you're using gnome
16:24
(that's the already included vnc server, in remote desktop preferences)
16:24
If you want a program that automates all that instead, check epoptes:

16:24
<xsl>
i'm using xubuntu
16:25
<alkisg>
epoptes works there too
16:25
Otherwise just run a vnc server on the client
16:25
<xsl>
epoptes on the chroot?
16:25
<alkisg>
No need to run it locally unless you also want to control the login screen
16:25
If you install epoptes on the server only, you can control the client after he logs in
16:26
If you install epoptes-client to the chroot as well, you can control it at login screen too
16:26
<xsl>
t control the login screen i use freenx ( its faster than vnc )
16:26
<alkisg>
So yeah that's the best
16:26
You can't have local logins with freenx
16:26
<xsl>
not on the clients
16:26
on the server itself
16:26
i use freenx to connect to LTSP server remotely

Seems that the chroot environment is doing something to prevent authentication at this partcular website. Returns "wrong password" when using an LTSP thin client. The server is Ubuntu 10.04.
19:27
Maybe something is missing from the chroot?
19:28
<alkisg>
rwmarch: type your password somewhere where you can see it so that you verify it's not a keyboard layout problem
19:28
<rwmarch>
Roger that. Will do.
19:34
Typed the characters into a text terminal on the client using the standard Canadian layout on the US English keyboard. I am seeing the expected characters -- in fact, all digits. Tried with and withuot using keypad.
19:35
withuot = without
19:35
<alkisg>
OK, I've no other ideas why a thin client would do that, as the process really runs on your server
19:36
<rwmarch>
Right.

Hey, i'm freshly new using ltsp, is it normal to have ~20mbps traffic with one thinclient with 22" monitor and 24bit depth ubuntu 10.04?
20:18
<elias_a>
All the time? No IMHO.
20:18
Not...
20:25
<DIoX|DaZ>
yes, it's stable traffic :\

You get that traffic when the client has no on-screen movement whatsoever?

<DIoX|DaZ>
it's approx showing desktop - and watching traffic monitor ^_^
20:40
what would be normal - logical traffic? ~10mbps?
20:40
<alkisg>
Try with nothing moving on screen
20:40
You should get almost zero in this case
20:41
For moving screens, you can get anywhere from 1 kb to 1 gbps
20:41
E.g. HD video is more than 500mbps
20:41
<DIoX|DaZ>
not doing nothing is ~ 0.8mBps
20:41
<alkisg>
Yes what you're seeing is normal then
20:42
You can decrease it a bit by setting colordepth=16
20:42
<DIoX|DaZ>
i've tried that - changed gui, and set depth 8bit and got approx 500kBps
20:43
but i've never used ltsp thought that traffic would be like rdp ^_^
20:43
<alkisg>
No, it has more traffic, but it's also faster
20:43
E.g. you can see full screen video without lost frames
20:44
<DIoX|DaZ>
yes, i've noticed that it's smooth like it's installed in thinclient... will give more tries tomorrow ^_^
20:44

gothaggis if you have your cups setup as a print server so that others can print from you can just put that print servers ip in lts.conf as CUPS_SERVER = ip

and the clients should pick it up automatically

hmm does it matter that in chroot /etc/cups/ there is no printers.conf?
