So I heard a while back that ltspinfo & friends were going to eventually make it into LTSP5 - is that still in progress at all?
14:00makghosh has quit IRC
14:02
<johnny>
ltspinfo ?
14:02
i'v e never even heard of that :)
14:02
<Lns>
johnny: http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LtspInfo
14:02
I remember seeing it before in 4.2...but it didn't get merged w/5. Very neat shell-based app to control thin clients
14:03
<johnny>
hmm.. seems like it shoudl be done over ssh..
14:03
i guess that's the hard part to manage
14:03
<Lns>
johnny: err, and ltspcfg too
14:04
johnny: http://www.estrellateyarde.es/photos/ltspcfg1_thumb.jpg
14:04
<johnny>
now that hal and dbus are inside, i bet we can use that somehow
14:04
that isn't a good idea imo
14:04
<Lns>
johnny: totally. It seems like such a cool tool
14:04
<johnny>
that takes over the functionality of existing tools
14:05
like the distro tools themselves
14:05
<Lns>
johnny: well i'm sure some things are obsolete now
14:05
but it can be expanded to many other things
14:05
<johnny>
it probably shouldn't be done in an ltsp specify way tho
14:06
<Lns>
think about remotely shutting down thin-clients, starting/killing processes, things you need to do on the thin-client TTY..
14:06
(meaning IN ADDITION to things you need to do on the TC TTY)
14:06
<johnny>
didn't ogra start on some gtk gui
14:07
for something or other?
14:07
<Lns>
johnny: yeah, that was T-C-M I believe, which is not being developed anymore in favor of italc.. ?
14:07
<johnny>
no
14:07
it was something else
14:07
i can't recall now tho
14:08
<Lns>
johnny: you mean the thing to build the chroot, set up lts.conf, etc?
14:08
<johnny>
Lns, i think i'd personally be in favor of using avahi to expose the functions on the client .. sadly tho.. that would miss the necessary authentication
14:09
now.. i guess if you can connect the local dbus and hal to the remote one..
14:09
then you could access it via the ssh tunnel already
14:10
<Lns>
johnny: It looks like italc does a lot of this already, but it would be cool to have an ltsp-specific tool to do other things as well, and from the shell. /me <3 shell tools
14:11
<johnny>
well it wouldn't have to be ltsp specific
14:11
if we found a way to tie the two dbus's together
14:11
and consolekit
14:12
<Lns>
there ya go
14:16vagrantc has joined #ltsp
14:16sepski has joined #ltsp
14:23
<Gadi>
Lns: ltspinfo itself is a big security hole and was not ported to ltsp5 for that reason
14:24
<Lns>
Gadi: really? What was bad about security on it? (i really have no clue)
14:24
<Gadi>
there was no security on it
14:24
<Lns>
:p
14:24
<Gadi>
any user could type: ltspinfo -h <host> -s
14:24
<Lns>
pw-less root login, etc?
14:24
<Gadi>
and shut down a client
14:24
<Lns>
nice
14:24
<Gadi>
if you want something similar
14:24
use sshd in chroot
14:24
exchange a key
14:25
and script things that way
14:25
<Lns>
Gadi: That's a great idea, coincidentally I *just* started writing a script to do that very same thing, but on an array of LTSP servers on a network
14:25
it'd be simple to port to use w/thin-clients (sshd enabled chroot)
14:25Subhodip has quit IRC
14:25
<Lns>
Not that I'm any kind of experienced shell scripter, but I do know how to do *some* basic stuff
14:26
<johnny>
Gadi, but if the local system dbus could connect to the remote by the alraedy existing tunnel..
14:26
<Gadi>
yeah - there are security questions that way, too, but at least it is better
14:26
prolly not something that will be canned in ltsp
14:26
<johnny>
then the shutdown button would actually work :)
14:26
<Gadi>
johnny: that would work if the user logged in wants to shut down the client
14:26
but not if root wants to shut it down
14:27
say, at 3AM
14:27
<johnny>
well root would see all the console-kit sessions right?
14:28
if these actions were tied to those sessions as seats
14:28
then you could
14:39
<Lns>
Is there an lts.conf variable to turn of system beep on TCs?
14:39
<johnny>
no..
14:39
just delete the pcspkr module
14:40
<Lns>
ok

23:18
<vagrantc>
kwak: got that ^^ ?
23:23
<kwak>
yes got that. i
23:24
i'm using K12LTSP EL5 centos based, ltsp 4.X
23:32
i found the coz, but don't know how to fix it. my LTSP server is joined to a domain using Likewise Open. so when the users login, they type "domain\username" for username
23:32
when i log in using accounts created on the LTSP server, i can see the contents of the USB drive. any solutions why?
23:34* vagrantc isn't familiar with ltsp 4.x
23:34
<vagrantc>
localdev stuff changed a fair amount since then
23:38Guest52303 is now known as johnny
23:39
<johnny>
kwak, ltsp4 has too many serious security holes to be used in production from my understanding
23:39
and the number of people familiar with it, is dropping rapidly
23:39* vagrantc is starting to loose the details of the improved Xsession handling for ldm ...
23:39
<johnny>
improved?
23:40
<vagrantc>
johnny: so that when you select the non-default session, it actually still uses Xsession
23:40
<johnny>
so that the stuff in Xsession.d/ runs?
23:40
or whatever
23:40
<vagrantc>
yes
23:40
<johnny>
gentoo's xorg could use a serious upgrade in configuration..
23:41
<vagrantc>
i think the hard part was the getting it to pick up values from the rc.d walking ...
23:41
<johnny>
ours requires xdm to actually do anything..
23:41
maybe they are just imagining that all the rest are becoming obsolete :)
23:41
which is suppose is true..
23:59
on my desktop, the only thing i have in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/ is dbus
