15:06 | <groeg> Try something like: interface eth0; in your dhcpd.conf
| |
15:09 | Set a static configuration to eth0

| |
15:30 | <alkisg> Is it thin or is it fat... if you open a terminal, does the prompt say "user@server", or "user@ltsp123"?
| |
15:30 | <me_> thin
| |
15:31 | <alkisg> Did you open a terminal?
| |
15:31 | Because thin client applications *are* ran on the server, so they don't need ip forwarding or anything else
| |
15:32 | <me_> it is hard to setup ltsp
| |
15:32 | <muppis> It's not hard if you have basic knowledge from used system, and life is lifetime learning.
| |
15:33 | <me_> using edubuntu or debian-edu to setup ltsp is quite easy
| |
15:35 | but installing from debian or ubuntu is time-consiming

| |

| |
15:51 | ?
| |
15:52 | <muppis> It depends what you changed in those files.
| |
15:52 | <Guest66160> set static ip to eth0
| |
15:53 | <muppis> That shouldn't affect then.
| |
15:53 | <Guest66160> and let networkmanager accept the changes in interfaces
| |
15:53 | thanks

15:54 | i can visit internet via keeping eth0 unconnected
| |
15:55 | <muppis> From Network Manager?
| |
15:56 | <Guest66160> pull the cab out
| |
15:57 | maybe from networkmanager is ok
| |
15:58 | <muppis> Then something, probably Network Manager, screws routing table when cable is plugged.

16:18 | <roasted> muppis: I remember mine as well. I tested LTSP with only one client. Server and client had a direct cat5 line in between, no switch or anything. My boss got into hot water after his 3rd attempt at thin clients for these two labs failed. I suggested LTSP. He said "Make it work within 3 days."
| |
16:18 | muppis: I had it running by noon. :P
| |
16:18 | one server, two processor @ dual core each, 24 GB RAM, 2x gigabit NIC (~35 machines per lab, so 1 nic per lab). It was glorious.
| |
16:19 | problem was we found out the P4 systems we had had problematic HDD controllers, so they were WILDLY slow on HDD, but amazingly faster over USB. P4's aren't super machines, but P4's are beasts for thin client usage. We had them, no additional cost, already on the desk wired up, server was on a shelf for recycling. :P
| |
16:27 | <muppis> roasted, best of ltsp. :D

16:37 | <roasted> I don't use ltsp much in my new environment, unfortunately.
| |
16:38 | I moved jobs to another district. We're all laptops based on Ubuntu.
| |
16:38 | physical labs were removed in favor of classrooms and the labs turned into laptop carts and direct 1 to 1 setups (high school has a 1 to 1, so each student has a laptop, middle school to follow next year, etc)
| |
16:39 | and there's the man who helped me many a time years ago when I was knee deep in ltsp for the first time
| |
16:39 | what's up alkisg?
| |
16:41 | <alkisg> Hi roasted, hiall
| |
16:41 | <roasted> how's life been treating you
| |
16:41 | still busy being amazing and making ltsp a wonderful solution for countless people around the world? :P
| |
16:42 | <alkisg> Haha, nah, ltsp has lost some of its momentum
| |
16:42 | It's still our solution of choice here, but it does need a lot of refinement
| |
16:42 | ...well, basically, the desktop environments are the actual issue, not ltsp...
| |
16:43 | <roasted> trouble pushing unity across the wire, eh?
| |
16:44 | <alkisg> Unity has always been off the table, it's not only unusable wrt HCI, it doesn't even work on thin clients...
| |
16:44 | Gnome-flashback...
| |
16:44 | <roasted> yeah, understandable.
| |
16:44 | I quite like Unity but I understand that UI's like that are too heavy for something like LTSP.
| |
16:45 | <alkisg> It's a pitty, now that all the OSes want to merge the desktop/tablet UIs, Linux could make the difference by sticking to the desktop UI...
| |
16:45 | As there are many many people against that unification
| |
16:45 | <roasted> there's a number for it as well. Different strokes.
| |
16:46 | There are desktops out there that strive for the opposite, which is really the beauty of Linux. I bet LXDE screams over the wire with LTSP.
| |
16:47 | <alkisg> With only a handful of developers each, it's not a beauty, it's bad for their quality...
| |
16:47 | Fragmentation is good for choice, bad for quality
| |
16:47 | <roasted> LXDE/Qt seems to be gaining a lot of traction, perhaps that'll change in time, at least in that department.
| |
16:48 | XFCE is nice but has consistently displayed a sloth-like speed when it comes to updates and feature changes. Though perhaps that's a good thing.
| |
16:49 | <alkisg> https://github.com/lxde/lxde-qt
| |
16:49 | 6 contributors
| |
16:49 | <roasted> ha, damn.
| |
16:49 | <alkisg> Most commits 2 months ago
| |
16:49 | <roasted> maybe that's just the public interest that seems to be booming then :P
| |
16:50 | elementary OS's Pantheon UI strives for quality and is rather light. I wonder if that could be plugged in.
| |
16:50 | <alkisg> LTSP has had tens of contributors, and only a couple of them are active the last years...
| |
16:50 | <roasted> Last I heard they have all but 5 active bugs on their next release and still won't release it as a public beta until they are fixed.
