05:05 | <wolfaba> Hi all. I have simple question. When LTSP thin-client mounts NFS root FS, how is it done, that changes are not written into this NFS root FS, but only temporary/static only for this client? I use unionfs. Do you have some other/better solution? Thank you for answer.

05:08 | <ogra> ubuntu uses unionfs ... and no nfs
| |
05:09 | we found that using an nbd blockdevice that exports a squashfs which during boot gets merged with a tmpfs in a union is a lot faster than using plain nfs
| |
05:10 | the old nfs mounting had a method to copy single files and dirs into a tmpfs and link them to get writability
| |
05:10 | debian still uses that

19:31 | <husimon> hey does anyone use ltsp with rhel 5?
| |
19:31 | I really need to get that working
| |
19:33 | <gbolte> husimon, I am sure someone here knows something
| |
19:33 | :)
| |
19:33 | <husimon> ya if they are awake :)
| |
19:33 | <gbolte> thats the key
| |
19:33 | <husimon> seems like you should be able to use it with whatever distro by using the tar
| |
19:33 | <gbolte> 4.2?
| |
19:33 | <husimon> 4.2 ?
| |
19:33 | ltsp 4.2?
| |
19:33 | <gbolte> yeah
| |
19:34 | <husimon> that works with rhel 5?
| |
19:34 | <gbolte> what version are you trying to use
| |
19:34 | lol
| |
19:34 | <husimon> i haven't tried any version yet
| |
19:34 | <gbolte> oh
| |
19:34 | lol
| |
19:34 | <husimon> but I saw that ltsp 5 is the latest version and so far only debian and ubuntu are integrated
| |
19:34 | * gbolte is on opensuse with ltsp5 | |
19:34 | <gbolte> :)
| |
19:35 | <husimon> so how did you do that? started from scratch?
| |
19:35 | <gbolte> no the distro has to support ltsp5
| |
19:35 | ltsp 4.2 was its own distro
| |
19:35 | so anything "should" support it
| |
19:36 | 5 changed a lot of things
| |
19:36 | <husimon> i've seen a few hacks with ltsp5
| |
19:36 | to get it working with other distros
| |
19:36 | <johnny> gentoo integration is almost done
| |
19:36 | <gbolte> husimon, what is the reasoning for having to use RHEL
| |
19:36 | <johnny> and fedora works too
| |
19:36 | <husimon> gbolte, because we pay for support and everyone here is used to it
| |
19:36 | <johnny> ask warren about rhel
| |
19:36 | <gbolte> warren, would be the man
| |
19:36 | :)
| |
19:37 | husimon, the reason I ask is because we pay for SLED and SLES but ended up using opensuse because it works
| |
19:37 | :P
| |
19:37 | <husimon> gbolte, hehe
| |
19:37 | <gbolte> we still use sles though
| |
19:37 | <husimon> gbolte, well if it worked on centos i'd use it
| |
19:38 | gbolte, fedora is a little different though.
| |
19:38 | <johnny> sure.. it perhaps does not work on rhel yet, but will i imagine
| |
19:38 | <husimon> http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/Ltsp5TarballInstructions
| |
19:38 | that seems to say it should

19:43 | <gbolte> husimon, what kinda setup are you planning to run ltsp on?
| |
19:44 | <husimon> wanted to run it on a rhel 5 box with buncha ram/cpu
| |
19:44 | then take my old shitty desktop computers and use them as clients for our library
| |
19:44 | really don't want to need to manage all those shitty computers
| |
19:44 | <gbolte> yeah
| |
19:44 | sounds like a plan
| |
19:44 | <husimon> the other plan I had was us sunray servers
| |
19:44 | <gbolte> are they already running rhel
| |
19:44 | ?
| |
19:45 | <irule> how may I in CLI quickly see what users ip address are using ares or any other p2p program?
| |
19:45 | <husimon> we just added more so some are and some aren't
| |
19:45 | <gbolte> ah
| |
19:45 | <husimon> I wonder if it's possible ltsp to a jewdows box
| |
19:45 | <gbolte> husimon, sure ltsp to rdesktop
| |
19:45 | :)
| |
19:46 | <husimon> probably need terminal services lic seats and stuff though
| |
19:46 | <gbolte> yes
| |
19:46 | you would
| |
19:46 | <husimon> I might just fool around with vms
| |
19:46 | <gbolte> irule, netstat -npt might show you something
| |
19:46 | <irule> thanks gbolte
| |
19:54 | <husimon> gbolte, i dunno ubuntu looks tempting
| |
19:54 | quick, easy, and it will work
| |
19:54 | hehe
| |
19:55 | <gbolte> husimon, yeah
| |
19:55 | and if you have no ties other than its what you used before to RHEL I wouldnt bother
| |
20:01 | <husimon> might have to rebuild a few pieces of software
| |
20:03 | <gbolte> like what

21:26 | <husimon> Hey I just setup ltsp and the client hangs
| |
21:26 | when I put the user/pass in
| |
21:26 | just says authenticating password, and then hangs.
| |
21:27 | any ideas?
| |
21:27 | tried updating the ssh keys
| |
21:27 | then the client image
| |
21:27 | no luck
| |
21:28 | <sh00p> i can't even get that far lol
| |
21:37 | <johnny> husimon, try sshing to that server from another box with the right account
| |
21:37 | <husimon> johnny, kk
| |
21:37 | I can ssh from the server to itself on that account
| |
21:38 | maybe it's listening on the wrong interface
| |
21:38 | i'll check that
| |
21:40 | <johnny> well.. another way to try
| |
21:40 | set SCREEN_02=shell
| |
21:40 | in lts.conf and then ctrl+alt+f2 on the client and try to ssh to the server from there
| |
21:40 | then you'll see exactly what the client is seeing
| |
21:40 | plus you can check /var/log/ldm.log there
| |

21:50 | <husimon> man I hate how debian based distros don't kill the dhclient after you change the network settings to static
| |
21:50 | that was the problem.....

21:50 | johnny, thanks for the screen option, I like the idea of having that available.
