<alkisg>
Thanks a lot stgraber, I was looking to get the touchscreen gt801_2plus1.ko module from similar devices (or compile it from http://www.zareason.net/android/zatab/) but sounds like it isn't worth it... so I'll switch back to the original ROM, I just hope it'll somehow stop lagging so frequently (e.g. every 30 secs :-/)
15:59Parker955_Away is now known as Parker955
16:01
<ogra-cb>
alkisg, its a cortex-a8 CPU, dont expect much more
16:02
<alkisg>
ogra-cb: with cyanogenmod v10 it was extremely fast and not lagging at all
16:02
...but the touchscreen wasn't working... :(
16:02
<ogra-cb>
for me the zarab is even hanging quite often with the original preinstalled image
16:02
*zatab
16:02
<alkisg>
Right, that's the only one that is hanging
16:02
The newer cm10 doesn't hang
16:02
<ogra-cb>
right, but ubuntu will
16:03
<alkisg>
ogra-cb: do you mean that if I install http://www.zareason.net/android/zatab/ubuntu-desktop-12.04-1-miniand.com.img.tar.gz, it will be hanging frequently?
16:04
<ogra-cb>
well, thats the nature of this HW, its a single core CPU, if its busy with a heavy task it will make the other tasks wait
16:04
<alkisg>
I'm talking about lag caused by bugs, not by slow CPU
16:04
<ogra-cb>
its fine for an embedded OS like android
16:05
<alkisg>
I've been using slow CPUs for ....20+ years now :-/
16:05
<ogra-cb>
right, i'm talking about it ebing usable for edubuntyu
16:05
*being
16:05
<alkisg>
E.g. edubuntu is usable on an intel atom,
16:05
<ogra-cb>
that tablet is far from an atom
16:05
<alkisg>
or even on a old celeron @ 1 GHz
16:06
We're also using lubuntu standalone installations on celerons @667 MHz/384 RAM
16:06
<ogra-cb>
its is crappy, outdated and overpriced hardware
16:06
<alkisg>
And I think they're also using lubuntu on the zatab image...
16:06
<ogra-cb>
likely
16:06
<alkisg>
http://www.zareason.net/android/zatab/IMG_20120925_171007.jpg
16:06
<ogra-cb>
running ubuntu would likely make it fall over
16:07
<alkisg>
So while it's true that the CPU isn't a powerhorse, I wasn't expecting all this lag (and I didn't get the lag on cm10)
16:07
<highvoltage>
alkisg: current state of software/hardware is really tough indeed
16:07
<ogra-cb>
it is about the quality of a beagleboard XM ... for which we dropped desktop support two releases ago, because the complaints became to much
16:08
<alkisg>
So for the preinstalled cm9 I'm inclined to say that the extreme lag is caused by bugs, not by the low hardware specs...
16:08
<ogra-cb>
oh, sure
16:08
if cm10 doesnt show that
16:08
<alkisg>
Right
16:09
ogra-cb: could you have a look there, file gt801_2plus1.c ? http://www.zareason.net/android/zatab/
16:09
I think that this is the driver for the touch screen
16:09
<highvoltage>
alkisg: I've been pondering suggesting lxde as a replacement for gnome-fallback in edubuntu (since it's going away anyway), but as stgraber points out to me, the apps themselves are getting more and more GL aggressive too, but I think it's not just for performance reasons that I think we need a good alternative, many users need a really simple UI
16:09
<ogra-cb>
alkisg, i didnt manage to ever get the touchscreen to work
16:09
<alkisg>
And I wonder if it'll be worth it to learn how to compile it against the appropriate headers, so that we can make the touchscreen work on cm10
16:10
highvoltage: not all apps are getting GL aggressive
16:10
<ogra-cb>
and i have not the slightest clue about android :)
16:10
<alkisg>
Many many schools never use 3d apps
16:10
<highvoltage>
alkisg: indeed, the important ones (like web browsers) are though. but I guess moving to local apps for everything will help for that
16:10
<alkisg>
Thank you ogra-cb... I emailed zareason, I hope they'll at least reply...
16:11
highvoltage: which browser is requiring gl?
16:11
<highvoltage>
alkisg: almost all of them are starting to render everything using GL.
16:11
<ogra-cb>
alkisg, what i tried to do with my zatab was actually to try to get ubuntu images up, but i got stuck on various issues (and then the nexus7 came my way)
16:12
<highvoltage>
alkisg: chromium, firefox, rekonq, gnome web...
16:12
<alkisg>
ogra-cb: they have a premade image there, 29-oct-2012... I might give it a try
16:12
<highvoltage>
alkisg: it will make running them remotely really tough on server CPU
16:13
<alkisg>
http://news.techworld.com/applications/3257095/firefox-4-beta-ditches-opengl-rendering-for-linux-users/
16:13
"We tried enabling OpenGL on Linux, and discovered that most Linux drivers are so disastrously buggy (think 'crash the X server at the drop of a hat, and paint incorrectly the rest of the time' buggy)
16:13
that we had to disable it for now," wrote Mozilla developer Boris Zbarsky Friday in a comment on the Mozilla Hacks developer blog. "Heck, we're even disabling WebGL for most Linux drivers, last I checked."
16:17* alkisg thinks that drivers with proper gl support won't be available for the majority of linux users for at least the next 5 years...

highvoltage: btw, it's possible that the gnome-fallback session won't go "completely" away
17:14
They're trying to offer most of its functionality through plugins
17:14
So if someone picks up the panel and a few other bits, it might still be available for 14.04
17:15
If upstream gnome does offer something that works with 2D for 14.04, I'd prefer it over LXDE...
17:16
<highvoltage>
alkisg_web: yep, gnome-shell with plugins can already provide a close-to-classic experience
17:16
alkisg_web: although it's unlikely that they'll release something that works only on 2D that doesn't rely on llvm or such
17:16
<alkisg_web>
They're starting to (re)implement them in the upstream gnome tree
17:17
highvoltage: that's what they're talking about these days though
17:17
The thread I was reading started a week or so ago
17:17
<highvoltage>
alkisg_web: I know, I follow gnome :)
17:17
<alkisg_web>
OK... I surely hope that this 2d version won't rely on llvmpipe
17:18
If it does, /me will vote for lxde :)
17:20
stgraber: any clues on which of those is the zatab original ROM? http://www.zareason.net/android/zatab/
17:20
Or is it somewhere else that my googling failed to find?
17:20
<highvoltage>
alkisg_web: it's supposed to be implemented on gnome-shell, so in that case it will require gl
