So I've been having a difficult time getting ltsp working on Ubuntu 16.04. I thought I was having auth issues but that doesn't seem to be the case. I've taken actual auth out and replaced it with a dummy user. When I log into the LDM screen I get a successful auth and then the screen goes black and then it returns the LDM login screen
13:30
I guess that means my desktop startx isn't working?
13:31
Where do I tell LTSP to use mate desktop?
13:35
<alkisg>
You can select the desktop using the LDM Preferences button/menu
13:35
(assuming you do have mate installed, that is)
13:47
<gp>
Thanks. Installing ubuntu-desktop to verify I didn't correctly install mate

Is it possible to configure the LDM script to default to different desktops by options to the shell script?
14:04
<alkisg>
!lts.conf
14:04
<ltsp>
lts.conf: (#1) http://manpages.ubuntu.com/lts.conf, or (#2) lts.conf manpage is available in the ltsp-docs package
14:05
<alkisg>
Sure, see LDM_SESSION there

Trying to decide if it is wise to run auto updates and rebuild the client image nightly for apt updates? using ltsp-pnp. Anyone do this?
16:08
or weekly
16:08
or something like that
16:27
<alkisg>
I don't think it's worth it. Manually on every kernel upgrade should be enough...
16:36
<gp>
Okay. Thank you
16:51kjackal has left IRC (kjackal!quassel@conference/ubuntu/x-dtkjnkuqokdbscrq, Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
17:00
<quinox1>
gp: I do it weekly, but just for fun really
17:00
it's all automated so it costs me nothing
17:02
<alkisg>
auto-updates break a lot of schools here, so i disable them
17:02
E.g. it autoupdates in the background while the teacher shuts down => apt corrupted
17:02
Silly debian/ubuntu practise... no popup, no tray notification...

I am having trouble with graphics drivers. Is it possible to try the amdgpu-pro drivers or is that ill-advised?
18:30
Or how do I get a list of drivers I can use for xserver in lts.conf?
18:30
I am trying to force amd driver but it doesn't seem to be working
18:31
<alkisg>
Forcing a driver is rarely needed in Ubuntu
18:31
What is the exact issue?
18:32
<gp>
I had to update a fat client graphics card that went out. One of AMD 580 cards is the replacement. But I cannot get it to be recognized by the system and it will not let me configure the monitors
18:32
It keeps autoselecting an intel driver
18:32
<alkisg>
Is it a thin client or a fat one?
18:33
If you open a terminal, do you see user@ltsp123, or user@server?
18:33
<gp>
One sec I will check.
18:34
Hrm rebuilt the image and having issues logging in. Will report back asap
18:34
<alkisg>
You can also just open epoptes and see if it's green or blue
18:35
<gp>
It should be a fat client but I haven't explicitly configured it
18:35
It is rebooting now. Commented out the lts.conf lines that I added
18:37
terminal lists user@ltsp116 which is the client hostname
18:37
<alkisg>
There, type: lspci -nn -k | grep -A 3 VGA | nc termbin.com 9999
18:37
What's the output?
18:38
<gp>
http://termbin.com/680m
18:39
thats a neat paste uploader
18:42
<alkisg>
You might want to ask in #ubuntu-x about the best driver for that
18:43
Mention Ubuntu 16.04 and your card; ltsp doesn't matter here
18:43
If they say you need amdgpu, then install it
18:43
<gp>
According to ubuntu docs it should be amdgpu
18:43
which is installed
18:43
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu
18:44
<ah|>
Hi@all, I have a quite new installation of ltsp and I observe a weird behaviour: Some users work as expected, some are somehow denied an thrown back to login. I can't see any differences in their groups or in their (permissions on) home-dirs. Does anyone know what I could have missend?
18:44
<alkisg>
ah|: a .dmrc that specifies the wrong session
18:44
Tell them to try selecting a session from the LDM Preferences menu, as a test
18:45
<ah|>
I tested that, but no effect. But you are right, they are different

<gp>
alkisg: sudo update-pciids seems to have let it identify the card. hopefully that fixes driver detection
18:48
<ah|>
Even the "xterm as fallback" option is not working if selected manually for the non-working users
18:50
<alkisg>
ah|: if you install epoptes.org and you're around in 40', I could take a look remotely
18:50
bb in 40'...
18:50
<ah|>
I'll try that
18:56adrianor1 is now known as adrianorg

19:32
ah|: here?
19:32
<ah|>
yes
19:32
<alkisg>
!vnc-edide
19:32
<ltsp>
vnc-edide: To share your screen with me, open Epoptes → Help menu → Remote support → Host: srv1-dide.ioa.sch.gr, and click the Connect button
19:35
<ah|>
Well, not that easy. X11 MIT Shared Memory Attach failed
19:35
<alkisg>
ah|: from the server, not the client
19:35
<ah|>
Might be because I'm ssh-ing to the epoptes machine
19:35
<alkisg>
Ah ok, then:
19:35
x11vnc -noshm -connect srv1-dide.ioa.sch.gr
19:39
<ah|>
I'm feeling like a first time user :) I need some seconds to get x11vnc to that machine
19:39
<alkisg>
x11vnc is a dependency of epoptes
19:40
So if you installed epoptes, it should be there...
19:41
<ah|>
oh, on this machine, ok
19:48
<alkisg>
ah|: is this a test server?! ltsp-server with only 1 gb ram?!
19:49
<ah|>
well for installation purposes yes. It is a virtual one. And when it is running I will grant more RMA
19:49
RAM
19:49
<alkisg>
OK
19:50
<ah|>
Could go up to 8gb
19:50
I thought as long as I'm the only one testing...
19:51
<alkisg>
ah|: ok, when it finishes reboot the client
19:51
<ah|>
Yep
19:55
login prompt is there
19:56
<alkisg>
Hmm, yet I don't see the client in epoptes
19:57
<ah|>
I just checked: a ping to "server" redirects to the epoptes server
20:02
<alkisg>
ah|: do you have shell access to the client via screen_02?
20:02
Can you type "epoptes-client server" there?
20:03
There it is :)
20:04
ah|: let's try first with plain ssh, as the bad user
20:06
X_COLOR_DEPTH="16" for fat clients isn't a good thing
20:06
<ah|>
ok, I'm not keen on that
20:07
<alkisg>
Also LDM_SESSION="/usr/bin/openbox-lxde" doesn't exist in the xsession files
20:07
<ah|>
You are right
20:08
But that does not explain why it is also when switching manually to a session type.
20:09
<alkisg>
What does that error mean?
20:09Statler_Office has left IRC (Statler_Office!~Georg@gwrz3.lohn24.de, Remote host closed the connection)
20:09
<ah|>
means interruption in operating system call
20:09
<alkisg>
ah|: ah, does the password have any weird character like e.g. it starts with a space?
20:10
<ah|>
no lower charachter and numbers
20:15
weird, this is another user.
20:15
<alkisg>
ah|: and the weirdest part is that it allows him to wrie
20:15
*write
20:16
It's like they both have the same uid?!
20:17
ah|: ok,the problem is that you created users in the chroot
20:17
Delete them, then run ltsp-update-image again
20:20
ok
20:21
<ah|>
you are fast! would have taken me ages to find that mistake!
20:21
<alkisg>
After troubleshooting thousands of installations, you become faster :D
20:22
<ah|>
Right
20:22
Nevertheless: Thanks a lot!
20:22
<alkisg>
You're welcome
20:28
<ah|>
yippeee! It's working!
20:28
<alkisg>
:)
20:32* alkisg loves the lemmings "yippeee" reference :D
