<David___>
Hello, anyone around with ltsp skills atm?
00:47
anything like this around?
00:47
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall
00:47
14.04.1 does not have a alternative iso with that feature:(
00:56
<vagrantc>
you're just looking for help installing LTSP ?
00:57
David___: you might want to try ltsp-pnp:
00:57
!ltsp-pnp | echo David___
00:57
<ltsp`>
David___ ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
00:57
<vagrantc>
it's certainly the simplest way to set up an LTSP environment
01:01
<David___>
I have a server with 2 nics
01:01
one goes to router one to the gigabit switch for the thin/fat clients
01:02
the one problem i have is the server is a rack mount and its onboard gpu is only 16mb other than that it's specs are rather good.
01:02
but i need to to be headless
01:02
<vagrantc>
onboard GPU for the server is irrelevent
01:03
it uses the client's GPU
01:03
<David___>
yes, i mean as in when i follow the guides on net, they all seem to be gui based.
01:03
<vagrantc>
ah, for doing ltsp-pnp ... yes.
01:04
basically, you just need ltsp-server, ldm-server and a desktop environment installed
01:04
then you can run "ltsp-build-client" to build the client environment
01:05
you may want to install ltsp-server-standalone as well ... depends on your setup
01:05
<David___>
well atm server needs re-install
01:05
my attempts at ltsp just borked it
01:06
getting rather frustrated with it:(
01:06
its the only thing i have encountered that seems to make my brain fart so far.
01:07
do you know of a step by step guide that is upto date for it?
01:07
(headless with 2 nics)
01:07
?
01:12
<vagrantc>
i don't know about guides for ubuntu
01:12
!ubuntu
01:12
<ltsp`>
ubuntu: a Debian based GNU/Linux distrubution that includes a Ubuntu specific version of LTSP. It can be found at http://www.ubuntulinux.org. to install ltsp on ubuntu: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall
01:13
<vagrantc>
David___: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall has a section "Installing on top of an already running desktop system" with instructions
01:14
David___: that really should be all that's needed.
01:14
David___: but you'll need to adjust dhcpd.conf appropriate to your network
01:15
<David___>
Yea I think i must have been doing something wierd with that
01:22
if i was to install 12.04 and just run its normal updates, would it patch the security problems such as heartbleed and shellshock
01:22
or would it be borken.
01:29
<vagrantc>
it had better include security updates! :)
01:29
but you'll also need to update the LTSP environment
01:29
why 12.04 ?
01:29
<David___>
it apparently is the last "alternative" release
01:30
ie after that there is no "alternative" iso one cn download
01:30
on those one hits f4 then selects "ltsp install"
01:30
<vagrantc>
it's really not hard to install manually
01:30
<David___>
i dunno what i am doing wrong but i just cant get the dang thing to work
01:30
i install 14.04
01:30
<vagrantc>
two commands, editing dhcpd.conf ... there's nothing there the installer CD will get you that you wouldn't have to fix anyways
01:31
so if editing dhcpd.conf is what's blocking you, it's going to be the same problem installing directy from CD
01:31
David___: what exactly is the problem?
01:32
no sense recommending a universal solution to an unknown problem
01:32
<David___>
thats partly my issue its just not working... okey probably part of issue being its 1:32am and im stressed:)
01:32
im rebooting the server with a 14.04 lts 64bit in the dvd drive
01:33
going to clean install it and try again
01:33
if i have done somethig silly i might never find it otherwise
01:34
and thanks for your help so far vagrant, sorry for my derpiness.
01:35
oh and for some reason the nics are detected as p4p1 and p5p1 not eth0 etc
01:35
:)
01:36
ok its at 33% formatting.
01:36
and now 8% on the install part
01:37
once that is done i need to set a static ip of 192.168.1.51 to the p4p1 nic
01:37
and then where i go wrong is getting ltsp to run on the p5p1 interface:(
01:44
<vagrantc>
and unfortunately, i've gotta run...
01:44
David___: good luck!
01:44
<David___>
thanks i need it:)

<vasanth>
Hi alkisg
08:17
Any suggestion for backup for LTSP server??
08:18
<muppis>
Bacula
08:19
<Fenuks>
what to backup, by the way?
08:20
<vasanth>
i want to backup my server full
08:21
If i restore it then all configurations,files and permissions should be apply
08:24
Any idea?/
08:24
<muppis>
Bacula :D
08:24
<vasanth>
but i will take my backup locally and will copy it to my external device
08:25
Will bacula take the whole file system with configuration and all softwares ?/
08:25
<muppis>
Yes.
08:25
<vasanth>
Files permission?/
08:25
<muppis>
Yes.
08:25
<vasanth>
then super thank you so much
08:25
<Fenuks>
assuming you can set it up — not a trivial task (=
08:25
<vasanth>
means?/
08:26
<muppis>
Basic setup is good enough commented to run in one system.
08:26
<vasanth>
ok ok
08:26
<Fenuks>
muppis: not very good to use it, though, unless you have infinite space
08:27
<muppis>
Fenuks, it depends how much data and how long you want keep backups.
08:27
<vasanth>
Even i want to take backup of my /,LVM partition
08:27
<Fenuks>
vasanth: you want files backed up or partitions?
08:27
<vasanth>
which is better??
08:28
<muppis>
I use bacula in 3 different size setups. From 2 machine system to 40 machines, including virtuals backed up from LVM.
08:29
<Fenuks>
vasanth: it depends on what you want — unless you want to backup MBR, files should be enough
08:29
<vasanth>
oh
08:30
<Fenuks>
although if you're backing up VMs, you should probably backup their disks
08:31
<vasanth>
The ultimate requirement of mine is of taking back up is to restore the files and configurations exactly in the same location and the permission applied for the files should be applied as exactly even i restore it in a new harddisk
08:33
<muppis>
Bacula has one big flaw, but it can be goodness as well. It doesn't care about mountings. So if you need make a bare metal restore, you need take care from partitions and mountings by your self.
08:35
So if you want eaxct same, you need to remember that. If not, you can re-arrange everything.
08:37
<vasanth>
what do you think about clonezilla??
08:37
<Fenuks>
wrapper around dd?
08:39
<vasanth>
Is it good?/
08:39
<muppis>
Nope. Backups empty space as well.
08:40
<Fenuks>
It's a cloning tool, not backup as it is
08:43
<vasanth>
if i use another hardisk for cloning with the same space....i can replicate the cloning harddisk if my actual is getting into problem right??
08:43
<Fenuks>
vasanth: yes
08:45
If your source hdd has no unreadable sectors
08:49
<vasanth>
Can u please send me a link for configuring bacula for my ubuntu 12.04 alternate
08:50vagrantc has left IRC (vagrantc!~vagrant@freegeek/vagrantc, Quit: leaving)
09:00
<vasanth>
Can anybody have idea about how long will take for bacula to backup a full filesystem??
09:03
<muppis>
Just install it and read configuration files, you should get idea from there.
09:05
It really is simple in one system. You still need all three packages, bacula-dir, bacula-fd and bacula-sd. Only director need database, but it sets it up itself.
09:06
If you want more, http://www.bacula.org/ is the place.
09:08
Director is one who handles jobs, File daemon is one which gives the data and Storage daemon is the one who stores it.
09:10
In same machine backup, remember exclude the directory where sd stores backups or you end up endless loop which causes full disk and useless backup at end.
09:12
And in LTSP server there's no need to backup client images (in /opt/ltsp/images), because those are quickly rebuild and thus just eats up space from storage.
09:12
<vasanth>
ok
09:15
And i want some details about RAM
09:16
i have 8GB of RAM in my LTSP server and 10 users logged in...My Server starts eating Swap memory....Wat should i do now??
09:16
i need o update RAM ??
09:17
