ltspadmin, if you dont see errors there i dont need it. you might consider increasing verbosity to get more output. you can also consider running tcpdump on the dhcp server to see what happen when the clients request a lease. and make sure you have free leases
04:52
<ltspadmin>
okay in the logs..what are we specifically looking for..then id be happy to post up

I'm writing an article today on LinuxJournal.com about LTSP 5. Are there any specifics any of you might want me to mention?
08:02
<cyberorg>
Shawn_Powers, http://en.opensuse.org/Easy-LTSP GUI project for LTSP, part of openSUSE Google Summer of Code 2008 :)
08:03
Shawn_Powers, you might also know Fedora9, AltLinux, openSUSE-Edu, Debian and Ubuntu all have LTSP5 integrated
08:04
<Shawn_Powers_>
wow, the gui looks great...
08:04
I've been an LTSP administrator for a long time, and have just been editing the lts.conf file
08:04
I remember wishing there was a gui a long time back
08:04
<cyberorg>
Shawn_Powers, they are dummies, the actual one would be something that ogra's mom can use ;)
08:05
<Shawn_Powers_>
:D
08:06
<cyberorg>
http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/Easy-LTSP here is the development white board
08:06
<Shawn_Powers_>
I just started preparing for my summer upgrade to LTSP5 (probably with Ubuntu), and I was excited to see some great enhancements
08:06
<cyberorg>
student would start coding at the end of this month
08:06
<Shawn_Powers_>
very very awesome.
08:06
<cyberorg>
by september we should have something usable by everyone
08:07
<Shawn_Powers_>
I'm curious about "ldm" -- is this an LTSP thing, or an Ubuntu thing?
08:07
And is it difficult to tweak?
08:07
ie, if I want to force my users to use IceWM or some such thing?
08:08
(I haven't used LTSP in anything other than K12LTSP, so my understanding is a bit narrow)
08:08
<cyberorg>
LDM is a ltsp display manager, nothing there to tweak, it offers login screen with options of locales and desktop sessions to log in
08:08
<Shawn_Powers_>
I guess by "tweak" I meant can you specify sessions, or do they pull the info from the distro?
08:08
<cyberorg>
LDM provides X over ssh
08:09
it pulls all available sessions and languages automatically from the server
08:09
<Shawn_Powers_>
hrm
08:09
That's always been a pain in my side. ;)
08:09
(not LTSP's fault of course)
08:10
<cyberorg>
i advise you to give it a try before writing, a lot has changed since ltsp4.2 days, in fact it is a whole new approach to ltsp
08:11
<Shawn_Powers_>
Well, it's not an article for the print magazine, but the website. And I intend for it to be a "first impressions" type thing.
08:12
I played with the Edubuntu version yesterday, and really liked what I experienced.
08:12
Especially with multimedia
08:12
<cyberorg>
LTSP5 implementation on openSUSE won FOSS India award 2008 http://en.opensuse.org/LTSP
08:13
Shawn_Powers, cool, we can do with all the attention the project can get
08:14
<Shawn_Powers_>
Well, if it turns out well, be sure to Digg the thing as well
08:14
<cyberorg>
upstream needs more distribution contributing and integrating LTSP5 in their distros
08:14
<Shawn_Powers_>
Also needs some folks to document
08:14
<cyberorg>
sure link it here and post of ltsp-discuss mailing list
08:14
<Shawn_Powers_>
(says the professional writer that doesn't contribute any code... sigh)
08:15
<cyberorg>
code is not the only contribution, blogging, writing, making people aware of it is a big contribution too
08:16
<Shawn_Powers_>
:) I'll also mention this IRC channel too -- would this be the "proper" place to send people with more questions?

I'm looking for some help specifying refresh rate for my 1440x900 terminals
08:28Guaraldo has joined #ltsp
08:31
<Blinny>
If I specify 1440x900 for X_MODE_0, everything works great except for a flicker when I move the mouse. Changing the refresh rate from '60 Hz' to '75 Hz' in Preferences->Screen Resolution solves the problem. Unfortunately, this is a per-user fix instead of a machine-dependent fix. How can I accomplish the same thing from lts.conf ?

hello. Im fighting with an 8.04 setup....I have two nics..and one has been set to a 192.168.1..254 the other to dhcp. I even set the /etc/default/dhcp-server3 LISTEN to the proper interface. Here is the issue - when clients boot..it takes 2 -3 minutes to receive any kind of bootp/dhcp info. however, after 3 mins after loading each system...the next one will come up. Can some one help me debug/fix the issue?
11:03

11:04
<ltspadmin>
right
11:04
<Blinny>
And the _clients_ have two NICs in them?

11:13
Or is that 192.168.1.250 stuff from specifying the log server?
11:14
<ltspadmin>
that is actually capturing the log info from the clients...192.168.1.250 is one of the clients.
11:15
<Blinny>
I find it strange that it is exactly five seconds between every log message - one from the client, one from the server.

ltspadmin: When you're done please pastebin your dhcpd.conf - and verify that you absolutely have no other dhcp servers on this switch/subnet
11:36
<ltspadmin>
Blinny: that is a brilliant idea as well..i will actually connect a second laptop and see if there is any type of dhcp server on the network--that somehow magically appeared..

Right on. You also don't need the 'allow booting' and 'allow bootp' for ltsp.
