<sathis>
how to i get connected to ubuntu via vnc
03:49
as like windows
03:50
even after remote restart VNC has to get connected without any user log in @ front end
03:50
and ideas
03:50
<muppis>
sathis, FreeNX might easiest.
03:52
<sathis>
is that i can use that and get connected from windows real vnc
03:53
<muppis>
It has it own client to that, but if you insist vnc, then I suggest tightvnc.
03:55
<sathis>
right now i get connected to my ubuntu LTSP server via my real vnc, but for that i need tolog in front and then i get connected
03:55
<muppis>
Or x11vnc if you want to login without any user logged in from console.
03:55
<sathis>
x11vnc ok let me try that now
03:56
i have my another LTSP server, that has been rebooted now and and i was not able to get connected to my reala vnc
03:56
<muppis>
This is made for 6.06, but should still work. http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1548034&postcount=2
03:57
<sathis>
ok and one more dout
03:57
i have both windows and linux terminals in my env
03:58
i need to add mac ID of my thinclient to my LTSP so that selected thinclients gets boot ubuntu
03:58
is that any way i can add mac id with ltsp ?
03:59
<muppis>
Do you mean you use pxe booting for both Windows and Ubuntu?
04:00
<sathis>
yes
04:00
i have windows 2003 terminal server with live 100 user working with thincklients on windows
04:00
and now i have installed LTSP server between that
04:01
<muppis>
Then you need to make mac pools to dhcpd and define there which clients are for which system.
04:01
<sathis>
and made some range IP for LTSP dhcp
04:01
MAC pools in windows / ubuntu ?
04:01
<muppis>
Both.
04:02
<sathis>
ok lemme check in web for config details about mac pool for ubuntu
04:02
<alkisg>
sathis: for connecting to an ubuntu server, I too suggest neatx-server like muppis proposed. It's much easier to setup and much faster than VNC.
04:02
You just do an "add-apt-repository" and an "apt-get install neatx-server" ==> ready
04:03
<muppis>
If you use separate dhpcd for both (Windows has own dhcpd and Ubuntu its own), define them to respond only for corresponding client with mac pools.
04:03
<sathis>
but do i need the same client software in my windows workstation ?
04:03
<alkisg>
sathis: you need to install the freeware nx client from nomachine
04:03vmlintu has quit IRC
04:03
<sathis>
thanks guys
04:03
let me try now and make sure that gets works for me
04:04
and now i'm facing voice break in my LTSP thinclients Sip dailling
04:04
<alkisg>
This are the complete commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:freenx-team && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install neatx-server
04:06
<sathis>
Thanks looking in to that now
04:07
alkisg is that LAN via communication ?
04:08
<alkisg>
sathis: it can be used in LAN, WAN, whatever
04:08
It works over ssh so it's encrypted
04:08
You only need access to port 22
04:11
<sathis>
yup i have and i can try that
04:11
so any idea regarding SIP phones on ubuntu LTSP
04:12
cause we run a inbound call center where using astrix they make autodial and througs calls to ubuntu thinclients
04:12
i face some problem like voice break and cal jump to another user
04:13
why is that LTSP make's call break and auto cqll transfer
04:13
<alkisg>
Which application are you using? Are you using plain thin clients, localapps or fat clients?
04:13
<sathis>
Gigabytes Thinclients
04:14
<alkisg>
No I'm asking about the software not the hardware
04:14
<sathis>
ekiga for sip dailer
04:14
<alkisg>
OK if you don't know what "localapps" and "fat clients" are, then you're probably only using plain thin clients
04:14
SIP apps work better if installed in the chroot
04:14
<sathis>
on LTSP thinclients
04:15
<alkisg>
How much RAM do your clients have?
04:17
<sathis>
512MB
04:17
do i need to update the RAM in my thinclients to get a better voice quality ?
04:17
cause some times ekiga gets hangups
04:18
my LTSP server Config : IBM x3400 2 core with 8 GB RAM
04:18
<alkisg>
No, what I'm proposing is that with 512 MB RAM you can use them as fat clients instead
04:18
!fatclients
04:18
<ltspbot>
alkisg: "fatclients" :: You may find some info about the Ubuntu/LTSP implementation of fat clients at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/FatClients
04:19
<alkisg>
This way ekiga will run locally on the clients so you won't have any delays in sound etc
04:20
<sathis>
yes lemme read that fully
04:20
but i have alread 2 LTSP server currents running in production env
04:21
<alkisg>
So?
04:21
<sathis>
do that will make any change when i update those to FAT clients
04:21
<alkisg>
It will require much less cpu and ram on the server
04:21
No other change
04:22
<sathis>
ok will give a try on that
04:23
and my current ubuntu version is 10.04 Alternate
04:23
<alkisg>
Mine too, although I installed from the desktop.iso :)
04:24klausade has quit IRC
04:26
<sathis>
so is that i have to make any steps before updating this image on the current env
04:26
right now i run the ltsp-build-clients --arch i386
04:27
32bit thin clients i'm running with 64bit ubuntu LTSP server
04:28
<alkisg>
You would need to create a new image. And when you're done testing it, your fat clients AND your thin clients could use that new image, so you could delete the old one.
04:28
You need a testing phase though, if it's a production environment.
04:29
<sathis>
yes for sure cause only by last night i mounted my second server for production
04:29
and now i dont have real time server in hands for testing
04:29
but i have space in my VMware
04:29
may be i have to try with that fo this
04:29
<alkisg>
You can create a second image alongside the first one
04:30
In your production server, without any downtime at all
04:30
But. If you do something wrong, you may break your setup
04:30
So, it's up to you to decide. If you're experienced, you can do it with no downtime...
04:31
<sathis>
uhm its better i test those before i mess up with my current env

Hmmm... for me LTSP hangs for like 20 seconds when a wrong password is entered
06:17
Is this normal behaviour?
06:23
<muppis>
As it does same to me, it seems like it is normal.

Gus: just throwing idea in the air: couldn't this be a problem with tmpfs?
08:44
I'm having problem to ssh into thin clients: the login dialog comes but passwd is allways refused. I know this is a common problem and I browsed *my* list archives, but I can't find anything
08:44
<[GuS]>
xavierb: maybe, but i'v checked that, also nfs mounts, etc
08:45
i dont know what else to look
08:45
xavierb: the problem you have have a workaround in the bug report iirc
08:45
or maybe you didnt sport the ssh keys
08:45
export*
08:46
also could be that ldminfo is not running on xinetd.
08:46
<xavierb>
GuS: thanks, I will check. It can be the ssh keys.
08:49
GuS: are you using NFS?
08:50
<[GuS]>
xavierb: yes
08:51bobby_C has joined #ltsp
08:54
<xavierb>
GuS: did you set SYSLOG_HOST to send log to te server?
08:55
<[GuS]>
xavierb: yes, but it does not send it... dont know why... is why i
08:55
i've take a screenshot
08:58
<xavierb>
GuS: may be your forgot to configure syslog on the server to accept remote log
09:03
Gus: have a look here https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ltsp/index.php?title=IntegratingLtsp
09:03
GuS: in the chroot etc/init.d/ltsp-client-setup mounts certain directories and files as writeable using tmpfs
09:03
GuS: you should doucble check that
09:06
<[GuS]>
xavierb: is no the first time i install ltsp5 in gentoo, thats why.
09:06
Also in my work we use gentoo servers, i whish to change for other distro, but my boss does not.
09:07
and yes, i know that in that file cotains that, but that is in the client
09:09
<mistik1>
good morning boys and girls
09:09
<[GuS]>
hi mistik1
09:09
<xavierb>
GuS: you could hack a bit [chroot]etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh to display something big on the screen while the client boot
09:10
Gus: then just check mesage boot to see if it is launched
09:10
<[GuS]>
yep, i know. But seems to be ok compared to another ltsp server
09:13
also in gentoo there is not mountdevsubfs.sh
09:14
<xavierb>
GuS: that is the name in Debian, but you should have something similar
09:19
GuS: check the bind_mounts () fucntion in Gentoo's ltsp-client-setup
09:20
Gus: and ltsp-bindmounts
09:25
<[GuS]>
xavierb: yeah, ok. I am rebuilding the client again first. So have to wait. :)
09:26
xavierb: you mean this? root_write_method="bind_mounts". This is in another server that works. I dint checked in this one yet, but have to wait now
09:30
<xavierb>
GuS: that is the code to call the function. The function is bottom of the script.
09:31
GuS: you could add simple code in that function to display a bunch of "tmpsf is running" while booting
09:31
<[GuS]>
yeah..
09:32
I meant if to check that variable...

does any one know of the easies way to automatically shutdown my thin clients in karmic? I tried using chroot cronjobs, and autopoweroff, but neither work
16:20
<HrdwrBoB>
ssh with private key as root and call halt?
16:21
<sidartha>
that shut down the entire system. server and all
16:22
<HrdwrBoB>
um
16:22
then you aren't on the thin client
16:23evil_root is now known as zz_evil_root
16:23
<sidartha>
no, what I want to do is set up a script that automatically shuts down the clients at a given time.
16:25
i tried su root, on the thin client and /sbin/halt shuts down everything
16:34
<HrdwrBoB>
yeah
16:34
because you are't 'on' the thin client
16:34
the desktop is running on your server
16:35
the $LTSP_CLIENT variable will be the IP of the thin client
16:36
if you setup ssh allowing root in your chroot
16:36
you can ssh to that ip
16:36
and then shut it down
