<pba7498>
good morning...yesterday I indicated I was trying to create a computer lab for a school in Puerto Rico. I have gone through so many different tutorials and installs....I haven't had luck with any. I am doing an install once again and running into this problem: sed 's/^#IPAPPEND=3/IPAPPEND=3/' -i /etc/ltsp/update-kernels.conf gives me the following error: sed: can't read /etc/ltsp/update-kernels.conf: No such file or directory
11:50
Any ideas?

!ltsp-pnp
12:15
<ltsp>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is the recommented method to install and maintain LTSP for "usual" setups. Since it doesn't involve chroots, it requires little to no command line to maintain it. It automatically supports both thin and fat ltsp clients. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
12:15
<alkisg>
No
12:15
!ltsp-manager
12:15
<ltsp>
ltsp-manager: LTSP Manager is a GUI tool that makes LTSP maintenance easy. It's the recommended way to install LTSP in common setups. More info: http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Ltsp-manager
12:16
<alkisg>
pba7498: dpkg -S /etc/ltsp/update-kernels.conf
12:16
ltsp-client-core: /etc/ltsp/update-kernels.conf
12:16
If you don't have that file, you didn't properly install ltsp
12:16
Aaah linux mint, ok
12:16
pba7498: so, the problem is that linuxmint is broken, don't use it
12:16
If you really want to, put --install-recommends in all the apt lines
12:17
E.g. apt install --install-recommends ltsp-manager
12:17
Otherwise it's not installing essential packages, breaking all your installations
12:17
Mint is violating debian policy there, and also in a number of other places

@||cw this is the info that sed 's/^#IPAPPEND=3/IPAPPEND=3/' -i /etc/ltsp/update-kernels.conf is returning
12:18
sed: can't read /etc/ltsp/update-kernels.conf: No such file or directory

<alkisg>
pba7498_: did you read the solution I wrote above?
12:23
<pba7498_>
i haven't seen that, can you post it again?
12:23
<alkisg>
Go to the logs and read it: http://irclogs.ltsp.org/
12:23
<pba7498_>
ok
12:24
<alkisg>
So the "quick solution" if you want to keep using mint, is: apt remove ltsp-manager; apt install --install-recommends ltsp-manager
12:24
Remember to put --install-recommends in all your apt commands, because linuxmint is broken
12:27
Better use ubuntu-mate instead of linuxmint
12:30
<pba7498_>
yes that is what I did...seems to be working now. So you think I should just avoid mint all together?
12:37
That worked....thanks so much! Going back to mate

lol they /msg'd me "got it fixed....linux mint is broken"
12:53
yes, yes it is.
12:53
by design

is there a reason ltsp-manager only recommends? is it useful without those things?

<alkisg>
||cw: even if ltsp-manager depended on ltsp-client, it still wouldn't install the ltsp-client recommendations etc. So all of the packages would need to get modified, not only ltsp-manager.
14:22
a depends b which recommends c => c doesn't get installed in mint
14:38
<||cw>
I know, I'm just asking if some of ltsp's package recommends maybe should be requires
14:38
though it looks like it is, -client's recomends are just fonts, which should be fine
14:39
though it looks like it is, -client's recomends are just fonts, which should be fine
14:39
-derp
14:40
but -server should maybe depends nbd || nfs instead of just recommends nbd. is there a way to sue it without one of the 2?

<alkisg>
According to debian policy, "recommends" should be installed in all common setups
17:15
So if someone wants ltsp-server for an uncommon setup, for example if he wants to be able to build images but not serve them because e.g. he has an external nfs server... he should be able to do it without forcing him to install nbd|nfs
17:15
There's no reason to "fix mint" by breaking the policy
