09:56 | <fiesh> it appears creating a new image with clients running is, surprisingly, NOT safe...?!
| |
09:56 | I would have thought the image is copied and then a new one is written, and the file descriptor should just keep the old image from disappearing, and things should be safe. but I guess that's how it would be with a normal unix filesystem, nfs seems to make things go wonky?

12:34 | <quinox> in my experience it's not safe, but it usually works
| |
12:35 | yeah, LTSP does write the new image to a new file and renames the two files once it's done
| |
12:40 | (the "usually works" means I only rebuild the images outside office hours, unless there's a really serious issue in which case I'll do it now and hope not too many clients crash)

14:18 | <fiesh> hmm yeah, somewhat unsatisfactory
| |
14:19 | espcecially since no one typically logs out here
| |
14:19 | so sessions tend to run for weeks and months

15:14 | <fiesh> also, is there an official way to make the client also request an address via DHCP6? it seems to be content with its IPv4 address

17:01 | <quinox> I use SLAAC for IPv6
| |
17:04 | the entire boot setup is IPv4, so effectively it doesn't matter
