<ltsp>
I do not know about 'has', but I do know about these similar topics: 'LDM_PASSWORD_HASH', 'ROOT_PASSWORD_HASH'
10:09
<alkisg>
!LDM_PASSWORD_HASH
10:09
<ltsp>
LDM_PASSWORD_HASH: LDM_PASSWORD_HASH=True in lts.conf saves the password hash to /etc/shadow on login, so that the users can unlock the screensaver etc. If they happen to change their password though, that only takes effect until logout.

Using shutdown under LTSP 16.04 (under Unity and/or XFCE) reboots rather than powers off here. Known bug?
14:48
That is choosing shutdown from the power menu

alkisg: I think I got my test server sorted. Issue now is that my test client won't start the graphical environment
15:21
no segfaults or anything in the client log
15:24danboid has left IRC (danboid!~ISDADS\sg@146.87.65.146, Remote host closed the connection)
15:25
<mwalters>
I see an error on the client Xorg.0.log file about not being able to get session, PID #### doesn't belong to any session
15:45
<alkisg>
mwalters: can you describe what is special about your setup, so that we focus the troubleshooting efforts there?
15:45
Because it's not normal for the clients to segfault or be unable to run xorg etc
15:45
Are you trying with only one client that might even have hardware problems, or did you try with 2+ clients and they have the same issue?
15:46
<mwalters>
client is known to work on our 14.04 server
15:46
I can try another, though
15:54
<alkisg>
I've seen xorg drivers work in 12.04, fail in 14.04, work in 16.04, fail in 18.04 etc :)
15:54
<mwalters>
same issue on the client I use day to day. didn't see anything notable in syslog or dmesg, but see this in Xorg logs
15:54
system-logind: failed to get session: PID 1308 does not belong to any known session
15:54vagrantc has joined IRC (vagrantc!~vagrant@unaffiliated/vagrantc)
15:54
<alkisg>
That's not important though
15:54
<mwalters>
(the xorg log on the client)
15:55
ok, wasn't sure
15:55
<alkisg>
Can you pastebin xorg.7.log?
15:55
and dmesg and syslog?
15:55
and sudo ltsp-info from the server...
15:55
<mwalters>
sure
15:55
<alkisg>
Is the chroot thin or fat?
15:56
<mwalters>
thin
15:56
<alkisg>
And if it's fat, which desktop environment?
15:56
OK
15:56
<mwalters>
I never even get the login screen, it gets stuck at the startup messages on the client
15:56
<alkisg>
Do you have epoptes installed? Do you see the client in epoptes?
15:57
<mwalters>
I have not checked, lemme see
15:57
yes, I see it in epoptes
15:57
and can even see the login screen
15:58
<alkisg>
Can we do this the fast way then, i.e. for you to give me access to see the client?
15:58
!vnc-edide
15:58
<ltsp>
vnc-edide: To share your screen with me, open Epoptes → Help menu → Remote support → Host: srv1-dide.ioa.sch.gr, and click the Connect button
15:58
<mwalters>
sure
15:58
appreciate the help, one sec
16:00
<alkisg>
mwalters: so, the client shows ldm fine, yet you see the boot messages there?
16:00
<mwalters>
yes
16:00
<alkisg>
Heh. That's a new one
16:01
<mwalters>
glad I could come up with an interesting one ;)
16:02
<alkisg>
Did it show a shell now?
16:03
<mwalters>
yes
16:03
<alkisg>
And now?
16:03
<mwalters>
back to the boot messages
16:04
<alkisg>
Is the screen connected via hdmi?
16:04
<mwalters>
monitor turned off
16:04
yes
16:04
oh, actually... it's connect to minidp to hdmi
16:04
sorry

16:05
<mwalters>
should be dp-1, I think
16:06
I see the login now
16:06
<alkisg>
mwalters: now?
16:06
OK, you need this in lts.conf: X_SMART_COLOR_DEPTH=False
16:06
<mwalters>
this is the "has a problem with default of 16bit", irght?
16:06
from the wiki
16:06
<alkisg>
Right
16:06
<mwalters>
cool, thanks!
16:06
<alkisg>
np
16:08
vagrantc: I've seen better results when we define the color depth in xorg.conf, vs passing it in the command line, -depth 16. Maybe we should roll with that...
16:09
<vagrantc>
that seems really surprising
16:09
<alkisg>
I've reported all these upstream, with no response...
16:10
<vagrantc>
back in the day, i pretty much set X_SMART_COLOR_DEPTH=False since so many clients failed with it for me ... but it's been years
16:10
<mwalters>
login popped right after after uncommenting that from lts.conf
16:11
<vagrantc>
fat clients still default to X_SMART_COLOR_DEPTH=False?
16:12
<alkisg>
Yeah we don't do anything for fat clients
16:12
It's just about thins. The new modesetting driver caused all these issues... it's on by default for intel cards now
16:12
All the other drivers work fine, only the modesetting has a lot of issues with 16 bpp
16:13
<vagrantc>
i also noticed quite a few applications looked much uglier with 16-bit color depth
16:13
<alkisg>
I haven't noticed that. With 8bpp sure, but not with 16
16:13
<vagrantc>
but again, this is... over 5 years ago

<mwalters>
probably a dumb question... I enabled fat-clients on my test server... how do i get to the epoptes server this way?
19:04
(assuming that I'm using one of the fat clients)
19:06
<alkisg>
Read the documentation in epoptes.org
19:06
There's a page just for that
19:07
<mwalters>
oh, I didn't see it on the bottom, thanks

<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, hi
19:40
I asked before, but how do I actually switch from vanilla ltsp to ltsp-pnp?
19:41
Do I add some ppa or...?
19:41
And which packages do I remove and which do I install?
19:41
<||cw>
!install
19:41
<ltsp>
install: http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Installation/Ubuntu for Ubuntu, or http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Installation for other distributions
19:42
<||cw>
looks like you just rebuild the image
19:43
<Hyperbyte>
Looks like I install ltsp-client
19:43
rm -rf /opt/ltsp/
19:44
And ltsp-update-image
19:46
Thanks ||cw
19:47
I assume LTSP works fine with Ubuntu 18?
19:52
<||cw>
with the PPA listed at that link, it should
20:05
<Hyperbyte>
Hmmm
20:05
Thanks again
