Anyone has an opinion in KDE vs Gnome wrt to LTSP?
06:53
And especially if KDE feels light in LTSP clients, or too heavy, compared to Gnome...
06:53* alkisg is afraid that he may have to switch to KDE with Unity, gnome-shell and Ubuntu 12.04 :-/
06:54
<muppis>
Godspeed.
07:25
<Hyperbyte>
MitaVerb's messages of last night are quite funny :-D
07:28
<alkisg>
He came here 2 nights ago too :D
07:28
I don't know what he meant by "looking at the header"
07:28
<Hyperbyte>
Topic?
07:29
<alkisg>
OK, but it doesn't mention anything about US mornings etc at the /topic
07:30
<Hyperbyte>
I'm trying to find the logs
07:30
<alkisg>
So I don't get how he understood that he needed to come back later :D
07:30
<Hyperbyte>
Maybe the IRC logs header?
07:30
Search results for messages by user "MitaVerb" (all times are UTC)
07:31
Either way, let's see when he comes back. :)
07:32
Or, if he reads the logs
07:33
Then he needs to try and run Firefox as a local app... if that works on a thin client with 256mb ram
07:42
<alkisg>
Flash won't go better as a localapp with those clients
07:42
DIRECT_X=True would help a bit though
07:45
<Hyperbyte>
!directx
07:45
<ltsp>
Hyperbyte: directx: If you want to turn off encryption to the workstation, which will speed up performance at the cost of security, you need to specify LDM_DIRECTX=True in your lts.conf file. Type !docs in IRC to get a link to the current documentation
07:45

There. Now all he has to do is read the logs. =)

Hello guys! How to add some sessions to ldm ? it only show failsafe xterm
10:02
<Hyperbyte>
You probably mean "sessions to X"
10:02
And by default LTSP has one Xsession, which is LDM (the LTSP login manager)
10:03
So if it's not doing that for you, you need to fix your LTSP installation, rather than add Xsessions. ;-)
10:08
<electrodib>
meant sessions to ldm sessions list, in fact. Needed to reconfigure ldm-server... all ok now, thanks!

woodthechuck, you shouldn't be using LTSP 4.2. It's very outdated.
14:18
<woodthechuck>
Ported LTSP 42. to CentOS 5.6 Plan to eventually go to DRBl, but need to solve this problem. Option may be to kick IBM clients to curb
14:19
<Hyperbyte>
With LTSP5, kernel options are in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default
14:19
For the client.

Setup a Beta of LTSP 5 Don't like the structure. DRBL will be a better option for us.

15:45
<magicbelly>
Im uncertain of what kind of licenses I might need
15:48
<alkisg>
That would be an MS question, though, not an LTSP one
15:48
Better asked in #windows or your local MS agent
15:49
<magicbelly>
it is an MS question but its in context with LTSP
15:49
<alkisg>
But of course the channel's open for such questions, I'm just saying that you might have better luck there
15:49
<magicbelly>
and I remember in the past people mention ing here such solutions
15:49
in fact the revolution linux people provide such a solution if I recall
15:50
and my concern has to do with the fact that on LTSP all access to RDS would come from the same machine, and how would that affect the licensing
15:50
<alkisg>
If rdesktop runs locally on the thin clients, then connections wouldn't originate from the same machine
15:51
Ah I got what you mean
15:51
<magicbelly>
especially for like isolated apps
15:51
<alkisg>
If you use LTSP to access your LTSP server, and then RDP to access your Windows machine, maybe you could only use 1 license? :D
15:52
<magicbelly>
alkisg heheh yes, or one special license i dont know
15:52
as in does one RDS license support more than one app
15:52
etc

and sent an email straight to our MS guys

15:53

Well I also have one related question if you ever find an MS lawyer... how many licenses do I need to run the same XP VM many times in an LTSP server :D
15:54
<magicbelly>
what are you using to run the VM?
15:54
<alkisg>
vbox
15:55
<magicbelly>
one sec
15:55
I believe that if the license is under an SA you dont really have a limit
15:55
<alkisg>
What is a "SA"?
15:55
<magicbelly>
software assurance
15:56
but for XP im not sure that it is the same
15:56Gremble has joined IRC (Gremble!~Ben@cpc12-aztw24-2-0-cust146.aztw.cable.virginmedia.com)
15:56
<magicbelly>
especially because XP is not longer an officially supported product by MS
15:56
<alkisg>
Hehe that'd be fun then, I could offer XP VMs for everyone with a single installation

15:57
<magicbelly>
anyway
15:57
i think they dont know themselves the answer
15:57
everytime i have a license challenge
15:57
we end up solving it
15:57
not MS
15:58
as in, finding the right answer

Hello. I want to run both 32-bit and 64-bit clients on my 64-bit LTSP server. Is there a way for this to happen automatically? If not, would this be handled in /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf?
16:43
<magicbelly>
damormino_: you have to build 2 images one for 32 and one for 64
16:44
<damormino_>
Ok. I have built 2 images. But my 32-bit clients try to load the 64-bit image, instead of the correct 32-bit image.
16:45
<magicbelly>
so you used the --arch option when running the build command correct?
16:45
<alkisg>
damormino_: why not just run 32-bit on all of them, e.g. with the -pae kernel if they have more than 4 Gb RAM?
16:45
(really your clients have more than 4 gb ram?)
16:46
<damormino_>
No, not 4 gb RAM. I only was thinking that if the client was 64-bit capable, then it would be more correct to run the 64-bit image. But I admit I do not understand the details.
16:46
<alkisg>
Thin clients? Fat clients? Thin with localapps?
16:47
What kind of setup are you using? For plain thin clients, there's no point in having a different chroot, the speed benefit would be too small
16:47
<magicbelly>
damormino_: listen to what alkisg says, he knows better.
16:47
<dgroos>
Seems like I can't use edubuntu menu-editor since neither my student users or their groups are defined locally. I'm using likewise-open for authentication. :(
16:47
Is my thinking correct?
16:49
<damormino_>
alkisg: I am currently running only thin clients. I was planning to check out thicker options later.
16:49
<alkisg>
damormino_: I don't think it's worth it to have 2 chroots then, with your current setup
16:51
<damormino_>
alkisg: OK, I expect you are correct. But if I want to test if there is a difference, would it be correct to use /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf to make 64-bit clients load the amd64 image? Using MAC address reservations?
16:52
<alkisg>
damormino_: that would be one way. Another would be to use a pxelinux module that detects 64bit vs 32 bit
16:52
With pxelinux you wouldn't have to declare mac addresses etc
16:52
<damormino_>
alkisg: Where would I find a pxelinux module that detects 64bit vs 32 bit?
16:53
<alkisg>
The documentation is in http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/Modules but it says that it's out of order now
16:53
<damormino_>
alkisg: Thank you very much. You have been very helpful.

<rmainard>
hello all, I have a really strange problem. I am running a classroom of about 25 ltsp clients with the fat client image. The clients are DisklessWorkstations ltsp-1620. The problem is that they will reboot at random, and when they reboot the load the bios setup utility. Has anyone had this problem? the ltsp server is Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit. Thanks.
