While updating ltsp-server:
00:13
NOTE: you will probably want to add to /etc/exports:
00:13
/opt/ltsp *(ro,no_root_squash,async)
00:13
and then run:
00:13
invoke-rc.d nfs-kernel-server reload
00:13
Well, I'm not using an NFS chroot, so I guess I shouldn't be seeing that warning?
00:24
<johnny>
sure.. but you can't set what type you're using from ltsp-build-client
00:24
i think your only recourse on ubuntu is by deleting the plugin
00:25
<alkisg>
johnny: I just received an update, I didn't call ltsp-build-client...

morning all

Hi, I have 2 chroot environments (lenny and squeeze). Some Thin Clients are booting lenny other are booting squeeze.All lenny TC are booting fine. The problem is with the squeeze TC. The client booted and at the end an error shows up shortly "hostname: forward host lookup failed, resource temporary unavailable". The client boots further and the LDM login screen comes. After login a popup appears with "Enter the name of the host you want to login to".
07:37
After entering the hostname the first error appears again and I get the ldm screen again. Why is chroot lenny working fine and squeeze not (in the same server)? Any ideas, many thanks

alkisg: ping

<alkisg>
pong
09:12
<Gadi>
did you see my commit over the weekend?
09:12
<alkisg>
Yup, but I didn't yet test it
09:12
<Gadi>
ah ok, let me know if that works for you
09:12* Gadi is going to be traveling for the next 2 weeks, so I will have intermittent access
09:13
<alkisg>
Hmmm I could tell you in a minute, I just updated with stgraber's ppa, hold on...
09:13
<Gadi>
did stgraber update that?
09:13
<alkisg>
I think so
09:16
<Gadi>
cool. I didn't test for "flickerfree-ness" bec I am not 100% sure I know what that looks like (and also, I prefer stability first and flickerfree-ness second)
09:16
;)
09:20
<alkisg>
test #1, OK: SCREEN_02=shell SCREEN_10=shell SCREEN_11=ldm
09:21
btw, I wonder, does that new way also save memory?
09:21
I.e. if I never switch to SCREEN_02, do I save the bash memory?
09:23
test #2, FAILED on vbox: SCREEN_02=shell SCREEN_10=ldm SCREEN_11=shell
09:23
Gadi, I can't switch to vt10 in this case
09:25
It also failed on real hardware, i.e. I could not switch to vt10, but it also booted and left me on vt1 instead of vt11.
09:25
<Gadi>
alkisg: when you switch, it may take 2 secs before the screen comes up
09:25
<alkisg>
Yup, but that's not it
09:25
I can't switch at all
09:26
I'm left on the same vt...
09:26
<Gadi>
boy, that's weird
09:27
<alkisg>
test #3: half failure
09:27
<Gadi>
in other words, it never inits the other vts?
09:27
<alkisg>
SCREEN_02=shell SCREEN_05=ldm SCREEN_09=shell
09:27
In this case, it started on vt5
09:27
(I'd expect it to start to vt9)
09:27
Otherwise it worked
09:27
Gadi: it does init the command-line vts, but not ldm
09:27
<Gadi>
are you sure my code is in there?
09:27
<alkisg>
bzr1711
09:27
says stgraber...
09:28methril_work_ has joined #ltsp
09:29
<alkisg>
I do have SCREEN_DEFAULT in /etc/init.d/ltsp-client-core
09:29
Gadi, keep in mind that something in lucid may be switching the active vt after our code is ran...
09:30
<Gadi>
can you try removing the "-s" from the openvt line in screen_session?
09:31
<alkisg>
Gadi: I tried to manually run openvt -c 10 /bin/bash
09:31
Then, I was able to switch to it
09:31
Then, ldm was started normally :)
09:31
(that's in test#2)
09:32
<Gadi>
alternatively, it may be all that backgrounding of openvt stuff in screen_session which is unnecessary now
09:34mikkel_ has joined #ltsp
09:34ball has joined #ltsp
09:35
<alkisg>
without the -s, I was left in vt1

09:39
<alkisg>
Gadi, I wonder if we could move your waiting code to a wrapper,
09:40
i.e. `openvt -c tty wrapper_script screen_script`
09:40
That wrapper script would wait until the console is active, and _then_ it would call the screen_script (ldm or...)
09:40
<Gadi>
alkisg: well, I suppose it could be a screen-session.d/ script
09:40
<alkisg>
The difference in this case is that openvt happens before we switch to that vt
09:41
So I imagine that would solve my problem where I can't switch to the vt with ldm...
09:43
<Gadi>
alkisg: alternatively, maybe screen_session should be called with openvt
09:43
I dunno
09:44
<alkisg>
But which vt? we should move some code then
09:44gentgeen__ has quit IRC
09:44* alkisg wonders how does upstart fit in all of this...
09:44
<Gadi>
your tests definitely seem to suggest that before openvt is called, none of the other vt's are active
09:44
which is weird
09:44
<alkisg>
The first 6 ones are
09:45
console-setup has a configuration file in which the default is tty[1-6]
09:45
<Gadi>
oh!
09:45gentgeen__ has joined #ltsp
09:45
<Gadi>
clever....
09:46
<methril_work_>
no clue about my question?
09:46* Gadi votes we revert back to LTSP4's logical use of vt1 ;)
09:47
<Gadi>
methril_work_: are you talking about the rootfs or some other mount?
09:47
<methril_work_>
rootfs
09:47
09:48
<Gadi>
rootfs is shared, so it should always be read-only on the client
09:48
anything you write to should be in a tmpfs
09:48
or other writable mount
09:48
<methril_work_>
but the mount at client show every mount as rw
09:48
<Gadi>
that you mount later
09:49
methril_work_: what distro?
09:49
<methril_work_>
09:49
debian
09:49
squeeze & lenny
09:49
<Gadi>
and you don't get an error on the client if you do: touch /tmp/foo
09:49
?
09:49
<methril_work_>
no errors
09:49
<Gadi>
it should tell you that its a read-only fs
09:50
<methril_work_>
09:50
<Gadi>
on the *client* (ie from a client shell session)
09:50
<methril_work_>
yes on the client
09:50
<Gadi>
not in a gnome-terminal window in your session
09:51
right?
09:51
<alkisg>
What does `hostname` tell you on the client?
09:51
ltsp123 or your server name?
09:51
<methril_work_>
09:51
in the client (ltsp client)

I'm having trouble installing a firefox extension for my ltsp clients
12:38
this is what i'm doing
12:39
sudo cp ~/Desktop/my-extension.xpi /opt/ltsp/i386/tmp
12:39
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386/tmp
12:39
sudo firefox -install-global-extensions my-extension.xpi
12:40
<alkisg>
Wow, firefox supports a -install-global-extensions parameter?!
12:40
<vagrantc>
if that's what you typed, the chroot command will most likely fail ...
12:40
<laron>
why will the chroot command fail
12:41
<vagrantc>
laron: because you should chroot to /opt/ltsp/i386
12:41
laron: not i386/tmp
12:41
<laron>
im sorry
12:41
i did chroot i386/tmp
12:41
i mean i386/
12:41
i rebuild the image of course, then when i login to a client and open firefox, i get the error
12:42
install.rdb is not installed
12:42
not the exact ".rdb" extension
12:42
so its like it worked but this extension file is not allowing it to run
12:43
its install.rdf
12:48
i'll post any progress, otherwise let me know if anyone has a solution
12:49
or, how do you add extensions for all your clients who run firefox locally?
12:50
<johnny>
the ones i want to add are already in the repo.. guess i'm lucky
12:50
apt-get install mozilla-firefox-adblock flashplugin-nonfree

12:52

i think the reason it is not working when i install it for my clients through chroot is because of a permission problem
