<maddiekool>
Hi Guys,
07:06
I have setup LTSP on ubuntu 18.04 Server then installed XFCE4-GUI for the server , everything looks good till 10 users then the system just start freezing.
07:07
<alkisg>
maddiekool: are you using thin or fat clients?
07:07
<maddiekool>
Any new users are unable to connect and the old ones start getting their firefox and other applications start freezing
07:07
<alkisg>
How much RAM and which exact CPU model do your clients have?
07:07
<maddiekool>
We are using thin clients - Fujitsu S550
07:07
with 2GB Ram each
07:08
<alkisg>
And how much RAM do you have on the server?
07:08
And which CPU on the server?
07:08
<maddiekool>
And server is a Poweredge R510 2CPU Xeon
07:08
and RAM is 32 GB
07:08
<alkisg>
The client cpu is weak, 267 score, https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Sempron+200U&id=1588
07:09
<maddiekool>
2x Intel Xeon X5660
07:10
<alkisg>
7569 score, https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+X5660+%40+2.80GHz&id=1305
07:10
<maddiekool>
alkisg with 5 users connected , everything works perfectly
07:10
<alkisg>
When you have 9-10 users connected, how much RAM does the server use, what's the output of `free`?
07:11
Also, what kind of networking, is it gigabit?
07:11
<maddiekool>
as soon as we hit 10 it start freezing up
07:11
<alkisg>
It might just be out of memory
07:11
<maddiekool>
when 10 user were connected RAM usage was 8GB
07:11
and yes gigabit network
07:11
<alkisg>
What about `top`, did it show a lot of CPU being used?
07:12
If it works for 5 and crashes for 10, it sounds like a bottleneck, something's getting stressed
07:12
Which is usually ram, cpu, or network
07:12
<maddiekool>
top looked good with a load average of 4-5
07:12
<alkisg>
Nowadays we're deprecating thin client support, to avoid stressing the server; we only recommend fat clients now
07:13
<maddiekool>
we also change the ulimit -n
07:13
from 1024 to 65K
07:13
<alkisg>
Doesn't "load average of 4-5" mean "100% cpu" on a quad core system?
07:14
Do you have LDM_DIRECTX=True in lts.conf?
07:14os_a has joined IRC (os_a!~Thunderbi@195.112.116.22)
07:14
<maddiekool>
it's a 24 core system
07:14
<alkisg>
ok
07:14
The next would be to monitor `iftop`
07:15
And check if it's 100% of network bandwidth used there
07:15
<maddiekool>
okay `iftop ` will do that
07:15
and revert back
07:15
<alkisg>
Btw, this is 64bit installation, not 32bit, right?
07:15
<maddiekool>
we also cannot then SSH to the server
07:16
<alkisg>
What's the output of `dpkg --print-architecture` ?
07:16
<maddiekool>
when 10 ore more users are connected , it's a 64 Bit
07:16
<alkisg>
Try also `dmesg` and `journalctl -e`
07:16
To see if the server reports any errors in the logs
07:16
<maddiekool>
we were getting dbus error messages and hence increased the ulimit -n
07:17
<alkisg>
ssh doesn't use dbus though
07:17os_a has left IRC (os_a!~Thunderbi@195.112.116.22, Client Quit)
07:17
<alkisg>
So it wouldn't justify the inability to login via ssh
07:17
<maddiekool>
hmmm
07:18
We also got "Shell request Failed on Channel 0"
07:18
when trying to SSH
07:19
<alkisg>
Try to `tail /var/log/auth.log` then as well
07:19
Btw, even though your client CPUs are weak, it might be better to use them as fat clients
07:19
Depending on their graphics cards, they might be able to watch youtube fullscreen, without any strain to the server at all
07:19jgee has joined IRC (jgee!~jgee@190.159.118.121)
07:19
<alkisg>
(fat clients meaning still netbooted, but with a "fat" ltsp chroot)
07:20
<maddiekool>
`[session uid=5361 pid=2519] Activated service 'org.freedesktop.systemd1' failed: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1`
07:20
also this in the logs
07:20
I will switch to fat clients and check this
07:21
<alkisg>
You can also try with a live usb ubuntu stick
07:21
If it works well enough, it'll have the same performance as ltsp fat client too
07:21
<maddiekool>
Also `LDM_DIRECTX=True` does exist
07:22
<alkisg>
OK, this saves some CPU; but the network is still strained a lot
07:22
<maddiekool>
the Main switch is 1GB and some switches are 100M
07:23
Let me boot up as fat client
07:23
<alkisg>
Then you might be also suffering from the flow control issue, you can test with epoptes
07:23
!lan
07:23
<ltsp>
I do not know about 'lan', but I do know about these similar topics: 'lan-benchmark'
07:23
<alkisg>
!lan-benchmark
07:23
<ltsp>
lan-benchmark: If you have a mixed-speed network (gigabit server<=>switch connection, and 100 Mbits/sec clients<=>switch connections), then you might suffer from the !flow-control issue. To benchmark your LAN with epoptes, see http://www.epoptes.org/documentation/lan-benchmark
07:26
<maddiekool>
Thanks for the promt reply , I too think its a network issue as the system looks good and powerful enough
07:27
will benchmark lan

Hi
09:14
Guys
09:14
So i changed the switch at the enpoints to 1GB
09:14
and still facing issues with firefox dropping out and some users unable to connect
09:16
`
09:16
I find this in the syslog
09:17
`ltspmru dbus-daemon[1357]: [session uid=5635 pid=1346] Failed to activate service org.a11y.Bus: Failed to fork (Resource temporarily unavailable)
09:17
also this
09:21
<alkisg>
maddiekool: focus on the ssh login, not on various programs that fail for consequent reasons
09:21
ssh should produce the base of the issue

Hey everyone!
19:16
I've already build with sucess a LTSP server with only VMware Horizon Client booting and showing up with the help of people from here (btw Thanks!) and from this GitHub old project (https://github.com/leschartreux/ltsp-vmview)
19:18
I don't know if here is the right place to ask, but now i want to build the same client as a fat-client like, but withou the LTSP server, just the same thing, but without the ltsp server running.
19:18
I've already opened the scripts from github project but i don't know much about shell script.
19:23
I've already opened the scripts from github project but i don't know much about shell script.
19:25
What i want to do it's just make a fat-client like, without LTSP, just the ubuntu server with MATE Desktop bringing up only the vmware horizon client, even without panels and so.
19:39
<alkisg>
Chakal77: where will the clients boot from, the local disk?
19:39
Or do you mean they'd boot from the server first, and then run from ram?

Now i'm trying to make them boot from hard disk
22:25
But in the same way this github project does
22:25
Withou the ltsp server
22:26
I just want a ubuntu server with gui that just boots only with vmware horizon client windows
22:26
Nothing more
