<alkisg>
Hi guys. On my laptop which acts as an ltsp server (ubuntu hardy), if I press Fn+Left arrow key to turn down the screen brightness, a (software) popup window is displayed that shows the brightness. The problem is that the LTSP clients also see this window!!! Any clues on where to report this bug? (or how to fix it?)

petre: everything is linke d from the home page
09:04
nothing new to discuss this week.
09:04
except I had the idea for the Live K12LTPS server image
09:04
<Q-FUNK>
ogra_cmpc: seems that -geode just entered unstable at debian. now, we just need to sync it.
09:05
<warren>
I haven't had time to make it work yet. Fedora 9 is approaching final freeze on Tuesday and I've been hammering out bugs.
09:05
petre: makghosh: if you folks have any questions please feel free to ask.
09:05
<petre>
how big is the live cd?
09:06
or rather image?
09:06
<warren>
petre: I will try to make it fit on a 1GB memory stick
09:07
petre: this means the best way to use it is if you have a 2GB stick
09:07
<petre>
which is <$20 nowadays
09:07
<warren>
well, speed matters
09:08
<petre>
right, but that's just a crap shoot; do they list their speed on the packaging anywhere?
09:09
<warren>
petre: most don't
09:10
<petre>
are most sticks USB 2.0 spec or 1.x? That could account for speed differences
09:11
<warren>
petre: all the sticks I tested claim 2.0
09:11
petre: but internally they are slow
09:13muh2000 has joined #ltsp
09:13
<laga>
my 512M stick does 18MB/s according to hdparm, i don't think that's too slow
09:13
<petre>
I've finally got ltsp-vmclient running; no sound though--is that because of pulse-audio-on-client bug or is it just not functional under qemu?
09:14
<warren>
ogra_cmpc: I'm tagging ldm-2.0.2 soon
09:14
petre: likely both
09:15
<petre>
laga, that might be a good documentation point:
09:15
<laga>
(i don't know what you're trying to accompilish here, though)
09:16
<petre>
"For the USB live image, you will want a fast stick. Test yours with hdparm, try to get one that is greater than <some number> for best performance."
09:16
booting LTSP server from USB stick.
09:16
<warren>
oh, I hadn't thought of hdparm
09:16
I tested mine with only file copies =)

09:17
<laga>
petre: when i bought the usb drive for my bedroom media centre, i just looked at the back of the package and there was a speed rating, similar to those found on CD drives. 150x was good enough for me :)
09:17chupa has joined #ltsp
09:18
<petre>
since the alternative will be running from DVD, yeah, 150x ought to be enough for anybody
09:18
(famous last words) ;-)
09:18
<laga>
heh. :)
09:18
i also found out that lilo doesn't like the stick to be switched to read-only mode. ;)
09:21
<petre>
laga, what parameters did you use w/hdparm to find read speed?
09:21
<laga>
petre: sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sdb
09:22
Timing cached reads roughly equals to the speed of your RAM, Timing buffered disk reads is the speed of your block device
09:23
<petre>
the Verbatim stick I carry in my pocket reports 13.3MB/sec
09:24
<laga>
some companies also make very fast sticks
09:25
"SanDisk Extreme® Ducati Edition USB Flash Drive" - um, ok. that might be overkill :)
09:27
<petre>
warren, what does hdparm report on whatever 'fast' USB stick you're using?
09:27
<laga>
i think the "readyboot" logo might also be a hint wrt drive speed
09:28
err, readyboost
09:28indradg has quit IRC
09:29
<laga>
wikipedia about readyboost: "The device must be capable of 2.5 MB/s read speeds for 4 KB random reads spread uniformly across the entire device and 1.75 MB/s write speeds for 512 KB random writes spread uniformly across the device"
09:30
i'm not sure if that's a good indicator then
09:30
<petre>
duh, just noticed the bug tracker link on the wiki main page
09:31
<laga>
petre: here are some numbers: http://www.techcrater.com/2007/04/05/readyboost-flash-memory-speed-list
09:32indradg has joined #ltsp
09:34
<warren>
petre: I personally don't have a fast USB stick
09:34
petre: my fastest is only 4MB/sec
09:34
<petre>
laga, the fastest thumb drive listed is 8MB/sec, but I think the page was last updated a year ago
09:34
<laga>
petre: oops.
09:35
<petre>
warren, are you just booting from the image locate on your hard disk?
09:36
<warren>
petre: no
09:38* petre is confused.
09:38
<petre>
are you just thinking in academic terms of the performance of booting from USB stick vs. DVD?
09:39
<laga>
flash memory has the advantage of very low seek times
09:39
<warren>
laga: except lots of flash memory was cheaply made and has slow throughput
09:39
<laga>
yup.
09:40
just got my other thumb drive, it does 22.7MB/s according to hdparm
09:40
<warren>
write?
09:40
<petre>
but it *is* writeable, whereas DVD-RW is more cumbersome
09:40
<warren>
read is typically faster than write
09:40
write is the speed that I care about
09:40
<laga>
warren: no, read. writing is typically read_speed/2
09:43
<petre>
bbiab...

19:35
<infinitiguy>
Can anyone help me with a LTSP chroot issue?
19:35
I had some localdev problems in the ubuntu ltsp-server-standalone package.. but otherwise had thin client working...
19:36
and followed debug info from this location... https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebugLocalDev
19:37
After setting the chroot root passwrd and doing ltsp-update-image the client now gets a permission denied for configure-x.sh
19:37
??
19:46
<lns>
infinitiguy, well obviously it's something done with the customization of the default chroot image..it's a matter of figuring that out.
19:46
if the clients were booting before the mod
19:47
<infinitiguy>
yes they were
19:48
i thnk maybe there's an issue with $ARCH recognition in a script...
19:48
<lns>
i'm not sure (i don't delve TOO deep into scripts, unless it's obvious)
19:49
<infinitiguy>
only because I saw an arch error in /etc/ltsp/dhcp.conf pointing to /opt/ltps/i386 instead of /opt/ltsp/amd64
19:49
and during the ltsp-update-image.. i got a message about not finding /opt/ltsp/386..
19:51
but it still finished its update... however the client runs into a /etc/rc2.r/S20ltsp-client-core: 162: /usr/lib/ltsp/configure-x.sh: Permission Denied
19:51
during the client boot sequence
19:51
and i see a login prompt.. but the root - passwd i set gives me a user account expired error
19:52
and that's ll i can get
19:52
ll=all
20:03
<lns>
infinitiguy, are your thin clients i386?
20:04
<infinitiguy>
the will run emt64
20:04
and i386
20:04jamesjames has joined #ltsp

but the thing is that they worked before the chroot /opt/ltsp/amd64 # passwd
20:04jamesjames has left #ltsp
20:05
<infinitiguy>
so i doubt if its a 64 bit kernel issue...
20:07
<lns>
when you built the amd64 chroot, did you specify --arch amd64 in ltsp-update-image ?
20:09
<infinitiguy>
no.. it was built by ubuntu ltsp-server-standalone v5.0.040~bzr...
20:10
ohh. but for the update image..
20:10
hmmm
20:10
let me try that, because i did that one manually
