05:51 | <alkisg> ogra_: does ubuntu offer any packages to run android emulator? E.g. http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/android-emulator ?
| |
05:51 | I see a lot of transitional packages, and I'm not sure if some of them are abandoned...
| |
05:52 | End goal is to run e.g. an android game inside ubuntu... so I'm looking to set up the official android emulator with graphics acceleration...

14:52 | <TheProf> Hello. I hope everyone is very well. I set up a new LTSP server (2 NIC, LTSP on top of Ubuntu-Mate 16.04) and I am having a strange problem where only a few of my users can log in. The specifics steps I went through are:
| |
14:54 | 1) Set up a temporary Ubuntu 16.04 LTSP Server and moved everyone over - the school has been running on that for 2 months no problem. 2) Did a clean install on the main server to Ubuntu-mate 16.04 + LTSP. During the installation the OS recognized the /home partition and kept it as is. Everything else was wiped.
| |
14:55 | 3) Rsync'd /home from the temporary server to the newly-formatted server and then tried to test some users. 4) Ran a script that deleted ALL the config files and directories from everyone's home folders. Basically anything that had a '.' in front of it was deleted. Only the actual documents were retained.
| |
14:56 | 5) Tried to log in, but only a very few users can log in. The rest accept the username and password, start the desktop loading process and then the login screen re-loads. It is not a password issue. When I look in the directory of a failed user, I see a newly created file called .xsession-errors.
| |
14:57 | Inside that file is Xsession: X session started for testuser at Mon May 15 10:34:32 EST 2017
| |
14:57 | localuser:testuser being added to access control list
| |
14:57 | openConnection: connect: No such file or directory
| |
14:57 | cannot connect to brltty at :0
| |
14:57 | /etc/X11/Xsession: 3: [: x: unexpected operator
| |
14:58 | I have tried changing the hardware on the fat client but same issue. How can I solve this please?

16:56 | <alkisg> TheProf: try logging in with the xterm session
| |
16:56 | From there, then run the mate session, so that you see all the error messages
| |
16:57 | <TheProf> alkisg: Hello. Thanks for responding. Do you mean to set the fat client to boot up to a command line when you say xterm session?
| |
16:58 | <alkisg> I mean to go to the preferences -> session menu, on the ldm login screen
| |
16:58 | And select the terminal session from the combo box there
| |
17:00 | <TheProf> OK. I understand. Thank you.

18:31 | <alkisg> TheProf: about clues => probably something you did, e.g. wrong permissions in the copy
| |
18:31 | Wrong UIDs, wrong ACLs, whatever
| |
18:32 | It doesn't sound ltsp-related
| |
18:32 | <TheProf> alkisg: I understand. You are right since a couple of users can successfully log in. I will follow your recommendation and report back. Thanks.
| |
18:34 | <alkisg> All new users can successfully login, right?
| |
18:34 | <TheProf> alkisg: no actually we tried to create a new account but they could not log in
| |
18:34 | I had run a script that corrected everyone's permissions so they own their own files / folders.
| |
18:34 | <alkisg> Are you using something ldap-related?
| |
18:34 | <TheProf> I am not.
| |
18:34 | <alkisg> OK, but that script shouldn't affect new users, right?
| |
18:35 | Since new users are supposed to already own their home dir
| |
18:35 | <TheProf> No it was a one-time script. And yes that is right. And even the failing users seem to own their own script since they're writing error logs into it.
| |
18:35 | And they create .<something> directories when they fail to log in
| |
18:36 | <alkisg> Do you know where that openConnection error comes from?
| |
18:36 | <TheProf> I'm wondering if it is a UID issue since they have the same username, groupname, and passwords but I think different actual UID numbers.
| |
18:36 | <alkisg> Or which dir is that non-existing one that it reports?
| |
18:36 | ls -lha /home should tell you
| |
18:37 | <TheProf> When I googled the error I only saw results about video card issues but I am not using those video cards.
| |
18:37 | <alkisg> It should list all home dirs as owned by user:user
| |
18:37 | <TheProf> I can ssh in and check now
| |
18:37 | <alkisg> Did you say that you can successfully login to the server using those users?
| |
18:37 | (graphically)
| |
18:38 | <TheProf> Yes I can log in directly at the server with those users that fail at the fat clients
| |
18:38 | Hence why I was wondering if it may be LTSP related.
| |
18:38 | <alkisg> Are you using ltsp-pnp, or do you have a chroot?
| |
18:38 | <TheProf> I have chroot.
| |
18:39 | <alkisg> Did you add any users in the chroot?
| |
18:39 | <TheProf> I did not.
| |
18:39 | <alkisg> Did you clone or copy the chroot from somewhere else, so as the permissions could be wrong due to bad copy?
| |
18:40 | <TheProf> I only copied /home. chroot was built from scratch before rsycning /home
| |
18:40 | <alkisg> And it's a fat chroot with mate in it?
| |
18:41 | <TheProf> Yes.
| |
18:41 | <alkisg> Let's say user1 can login to pc1, and user2 cannot login to pc2
| |
18:41 | Can user1 login to pc2?
| |
18:42 | Can user2 login to pc1?
| |
18:42 | <TheProf> I will need to test that. I only set up one server, a switch, and one fat client hardware.
| |
18:42 | forum has joined IRC (forum!~Thunderbi@193-154-19-114.adsl.highway.telekom.at) | |
18:42 | <TheProf> I swapped out the pc1 for alternate pc2 and it also failed
| |
18:42 | But I didn't try different users on different machines
| |
18:43 | ls -lha /home shows me each user owns their own home directory.
| |
18:43 | <alkisg> Can you put your lts.conf to pastebin?
| |
18:43 | <TheProf> so it's testuser testuser /home/testuser for example.
| |
18:43 | Sure.
| |
18:44 | <alkisg> One thing that I can think of, is if that pc has graphics driver issues, and can work with marco --no-composite, but not with marco --composite, and if user1 has selected a non-compositing window manager
| |
18:44 | <TheProf> !pastebin
| |
18:44 | <ltsp> pastebin: try !paste
| |
18:44 | <TheProf> !paste
| |
18:44 | <ltsp> paste: the LTSP pastebin is at http://ltsp.pastebin.com. Please paste all text longer than a line or two to the pastebin, as it helps to reduce traffic in the channel. Don't forget to paste the URL of the text here.
| |
18:44 | <alkisg> And another one, is if user1 has a .dmrc with the wrong session in it
| |
18:44 | !termbin
| |
18:44 | <ltsp> termbin: To share the output of some command, run: command | nc termbin.com 9999 . This executes command , sends its output to termbin.com, and returns a URL. Paste this URL here to share the command output with us.
| |
18:44 | <alkisg> E.g. cat lts.conf | nc termbin.com 9999
| |
18:45 | ...or whatever else suits you
| |
18:46 | <TheProf> None of the users have .dmrc or any . files at all
| |
18:46 | They were the first thing removed as soon as rsync was done. I didn't want a conflict so I deleted them all before trying to log anyone in
| |
18:47 | <alkisg> If you have access to the server, you can also test things with virtual thin/fat clients
| |
18:47 | E.g.
| |
18:47 | !kvm
| |
18:47 | <ltsp> kvm: Virtual thin client: kvm -m 256 -vga vmware -ctrl-grab -no-shutdown -net nic,model=virtio -net user,tftp=/var/lib/tftpboot,bootfile=/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0
| |
18:47 | <alkisg> Without having to go there and boot an actual client
| |
18:47 | <TheProf> Oh now that's cool. I didn't know that. That needs to be more well know.
| |
18:48 | <alkisg> It's called "virtual machines", there's kvm, virtualbox, vmware...
| |
18:48 | LTSP can't make them more known :)
| |
18:50 | <TheProf> I know of them but didn't know they can be used with LTSP. Of course I'm a biologist so I am already stretching my knowledge as is!
| |
18:50 | https://pastebin.com/p7rEQihw
| |
18:50 | <alkisg> You're doing very well then, if you're not an IT teacher :)
| |
18:50 | (like myself ;))
| |
18:51 | (09:36:42 μμ) TheProf: I'm wondering if it is a UID issue since they have the same username, groupname, and passwords but I think different actual UID numbers.
| |
18:51 | I'm not sure what you mean there
| |
18:51 | You have many users with the same username?
| |
18:51 | <TheProf> No sorry let me clarify
| |

18:54 | <TheProf> on the old server user testaccount had a number 1044 but on the new server they have a number 1057
| |
18:54 | <alkisg> That's ok; since you're saying that it happens with new users, we don't really need to check old/transferred accounts at this point
| |
18:55 | <TheProf> for the same user. Same spelling, password, etc. just some of them have a different number.
| |
18:55 | OK
| |
18:55 | <alkisg> But the lts.conf that you put to pastebin was only half of it; try the nc command instead
| |
18:55 | cat lts.conf | nc termbin.com 9999
| |
18:55 | <TheProf> I thought it was the whole thing. I'll use nc now
| |
18:56 | <alkisg> If you have passwords there, send me a pm
| |
18:56 | Don't send it in the channel then...
| |
18:56 | <TheProf> No passwords. it is fairly generic
| |
18:57 | <alkisg> k
| |
18:58 | <TheProf> http://termbin.com/v60h
| |
19:00 | <alkisg> Strange, it's again cut in half
| |
19:00 | <TheProf> It's not - that's the whole file
| |
19:00 | There's nothing else.
| |
19:00 | I deleted some of the commented out lines
| |
19:01 | I have a backup of it before I deleted the commented lines if that helps
| |
19:01 | <alkisg> It's a standard lts.conf, from lines 3 to 15, while lines 1-2 and 16+ are missing
| |
19:01 | But ok if you manually deleted those, it's fine
| |
19:01 | <TheProf> Yes I just deleted the parts about old monitors, local printing, etc.
| |
19:02 | <alkisg> Do you have graphical access to the server? Can you try virtual fat clients etc?
| |
19:02 | <TheProf> I will try that now.
| |
19:02 | <alkisg> ok
| |
19:03 | <TheProf> To run that kvm command am I running it from my remote ssh client on the server or?
| |
19:04 | <alkisg> hmm not exactly
| |
19:04 | ssh is terminal, it can't run graphics
| |
19:04 | One proper way to do it is to use x2go
| |
19:04 | Another one would be to use epoptes
| |
19:04 | A third one, to use ssh -X
| |
19:04 | <TheProf> I have x2go working on the server
| |
19:04 | <alkisg> Login with x2go then, and do it from there
| |
19:08 | <TheProf> OK I'm trying it now. I thought x2go was creating a session on the server and so would be the same as standing at the server rather than booting a thin client
| |
19:10 | <alkisg> Exactly, and you need to "stand on the server" before you run a "virtual thin client" with kvm
| |
19:10 | <TheProf> Ah OK. So a session within a session within a session. This is like session Inception :)
| |
19:11 | <alkisg> Haha
| |
19:11 | Now, suppose I was helping you do that
| |
19:12 | I'm connected from ubuntu with vnc to ubuntu and I would use epoptes to control your ...inception story
| |
19:13 | <TheProf> My Internet connection can barely handle irc. It cringes at that. It's still loading
| |
19:13 | OK it's up.
| |
19:14 | so I'm running that kvm command from where?
| |
19:14 | <alkisg> Open a terminal inside that x2go session
| |
19:15 | And run it from there
| |
19:15 | You might need to install kvm if you don't have it installed
| |
19:15 | Or you can use virtualbox if you already have it installed
| |
19:15 | (kvm if lighter than vbox, if you don't have any of those)
| |
19:16 | <TheProf> installing kvm now
