<Piyush>
hello
06:52
I have sucessfully install ltsp on my centos 6.2 64 bit
06:53
but when i try to boot the client, only login screen is coming
06:53
once i enter the username and password, then again the same login screen is coming
06:53
not able to debug it
06:55vmlintu has joined IRC (vmlintu!~vmlintu@a91-152-200-70.elisa-laajakaista.fi)
06:55
<Piyush>
not able to debug it
06:56
<alkisg>
I don't think anyone maintains ltsp on centos
06:57
You might want to consider changing the distribution
06:57
It might be a problem with your session, does it require 3d? E.g. is it gnome-shell?
06:58Grembler has joined IRC (Grembler!~Ben@cpc29-aztw22-2-0-cust128.18-1.cable.virginm.net)
06:59
<Piyush>
no its not 3d
06:59
SCREEN_07=ldm
06:59
<alkisg>
Which desktop environment? Gnome?
07:00
<Piyush>
yes its Gnome
07:00
<alkisg>
Gnome is 3d
07:00
Which version of gnome?
07:01
<Piyush>
gnome-session-2.28.0-22.el6.x86_64
07:01
gnome-desktop-2.28.2-11.el6.centos.x86_64
07:02
<alkisg>
That's the old gnome, ok, it's 2d, it should work
07:02
So it sounds like a problem with centos/ltsp
07:02
Try creating a /usr/share/xsessions/xterm.desktop session, that only runs xterm
07:02
Then select that one, and try launching gnome-session from there, to see the errors
07:02
I.e. you need to debug ltsp on centos because noone maintains it
07:03
<Piyush>
ok
07:04
can you provide me good link for ltsp to install on ubuntu?
07:04
<alkisg>
What are your client specs? CPU, RAM?
07:05
<Piyush>
these are thin client and on my server side its , 16GB ram 4 CPU
07:06
<alkisg>
So they don't have e.g. 1 GB RAM?
07:07
Here's one page for thin clients, I don't know if it's well maintained: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall
07:07
<Piyush>
yup they have ram aroung 512MB
07:08
<alkisg>
Basically you install ubuntu, install ltsp-server-standalone, and run ltsp-build-client
07:08
<Piyush>
ok and what about the ltsp-update-image
07:08
do i need to run this also
07:09
<alkisg>
ltsp-build-client also runs ltsp-update-image
07:10
<Piyush>
ok
07:10
thanks for your help
07:10
will try this

<Bruckner_2>
Hi
15:31
Anyone alive in here?
15:36
<gbti>
I'm alive
15:37
<Bruckner_2>
Cool
15:38
You're a ltsp implementer ?
15:38
<gbti>
nope
15:39
<Bruckner_2>
ok
15:42
<gbti>
but.. ask away!
15:42
<Bruckner_2>
hah
15:42
I was playing around with the default desktop
15:43
in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
15:43
because I am trying to get away from Unity a little, it's buggy
15:44
so I installed lxde
15:44
I don't think I want to drop it on this office without warning, it was an experiment
15:44
so I want to load Unity default again
15:45
<alkisg>
!gnome-flashback
15:45
<ltsp`>
I do not know about 'gnome-flashback', but I do know about these similar topics: 'gnome-fallback'
15:45
<alkisg>
!gnome-fallback
15:45
<ltsp`>
gnome-fallback: Unity, compiz etc are sometimes slow or buggy. To select gnome-fallback as your default session, install the gnome-session-fallback package, and put this in your lts.conf: LDM_SESSION="gnome-session --session=gnome-fallback"
15:45
<alkisg>
!unity
15:45
<ltsp`>
Error: "unity" is not a valid command.
15:45
<Bruckner_2>
yeah
15:45
<alkisg>
Meh... nowadays it's just LDM_SESSION=lubuntu or LDM_SESSION=ubuntu etc
15:46
<Bruckner_2>
okay
15:46
I'll try that, thanks
15:47
<gbti>
alkisg: I find out how to make xfreerdp work on Win8, works fine now.
15:47
<alkisg>
gbti: cool
15:48
!learn LDM_SESSION as to specify a default session for clients, run `ls /usr/share/xsessions`, see the filename.desktop that you're interested in, and then put LDM_SESSION="filename". For example, LDM_SESSION="gnome-fallback" or LDM_SESSION="ubuntu".
15:48
<ltsp`>
The operation succeeded.
15:49
<alkisg>
Bruckner_2: see that ^
15:49
<Bruckner_2>
I'll try the quites
15:49
quotes
15:49
the other didn't work
15:49
<gbti>
anyway, if anyone is searching for this on irc logs, there is how worked for me: 'xfreerdp --gdi sw --no-nla --no-tls --ignore-certificate -a 24 --no-bmp-cache -f 192.168.0.226'
15:50
<alkisg>
Bruckner_2: what is your ltsp version?
15:50
<Bruckner_2>
one moment, thanks
15:50
<alkisg>
!learn win8-rdp as SCREEN_07="xfreerdp --gdi sw --no-nla --no-tls --ignore-certificate -a 24 --no-bmp-cache -f 192.168.0.226"
15:50
<ltsp`>
The operation succeeded.
15:51
<Bruckner_2>
ltsp-server-standalone 5.3.7-0ubuntu2.8
15:52
<alkisg>
Yes that's old, LDM_SESSION was broken there
15:52
<Bruckner_2>
Oh
15:52
<alkisg>
Try the long form with gnome-session --session=ubuntu etc
15:52
I.e. the Exec line from the .desktop file
15:52
<Bruckner_2>
okay
15:55
that wored
15:55
worked
15:55
thanks
15:55
<alkisg>
np
15:56
<Bruckner_2>
Our company has been using ltsp for years, I've been here for six months, everyone's sorta giving up on ltsp because it seems to be becoming more unstable
15:56
maybe it's fine, and things can be manipulated to rock solid again
15:56
<alkisg>
LTSP doesn't have unstable code, but xorg over the network is indeed becoming more unstable
15:56
<Bruckner_2>
but every time our main server goes down or needs to be rebooted, ltsp doesn't come back clean
15:56
<alkisg>
It's not an ltsp issue
15:56
<Bruckner_2>
it's ubuntu?
15:57
<alkisg>
No, it's xorg
15:57
<Bruckner_2>
ok
15:57
<alkisg>
Linux in general
15:57
<gbti>
it can be dhcp and tftp too
15:57
<Bruckner_2>
what's your opinion on what has happened?
15:57
<alkisg>
But about your server going down, netbooted clients surely can't survive this...
15:57
<Bruckner_2>
we use the main server as dhcp, tells tftp where the ltsp client is
15:58
but when we bring down both servers and bring main, then ltsp up
15:58
it always takes dicking around with to get it going
15:58
<alkisg>
Bruckner_2: other than general issues with linux, if you think you have specific issues with ltsp, you should mention them one by one, not generally by "unstable"
15:58
<Bruckner_2>
true
15:59
it's mostly that WE haven't maintained the ltsp servers, they (way before I got here) were rock solid
15:59
<alkisg>
If by "ltsp up" you mean that tftpd is running (or not), then it's an issue with tftpd
16:00
<Bruckner_2>
yeah
16:00
<alkisg>
Upstart did have a few issues, e.g. with tftpd-hpa...
16:00
<Bruckner_2>
it's nbd that messes up
16:00* alkisg is using dnsmasq, which isn't using upstart, and hasn't seen any issues
16:00
<alkisg>
What's wrong with nbd?
16:00
I think now you're just mentioning all related services without focusing on one that could indeed be the problem... :)
16:01
Anyway, if you ever have a specific issue at hand, do mention it
16:01
<Bruckner_2>
there's either port conflicts that I missed, fixed that, nbd becomes messed up and has to be reconfigured to use port 2000 again
16:01
<alkisg>
NBD is using 10809 nowadays
16:01
It got a specific port number assigned by IANA
16:02
<Bruckner_2>
ok
16:02
so I shouldn't define a port ?
16:02
<alkisg>
So, the nbd port number isn't a stability issue, nope
16:02
No
16:02
And you shouldn't be using inetd either
16:02
<Bruckner_2>
okay
16:03
<alkisg>
I think you do need to update your services configuration...
16:03
<Bruckner_2>
that's the thing, I think that there's been enough changes that our old procedures and configuration documentation is moot
16:04
<alkisg>
Yes, all software advances in all operating systems
16:04
sysadmins do need to keep up
16:04
The nbd software got updated to name-based exports at port 10809, so ltsp-config was written to make its configuration easier
16:04
<Bruckner_2>
our team knows this but has lost resources to dedicate to ltsp
16:05
<alkisg>
Well, you can't maintain an installation without a maintainer
16:05
<Bruckner_2>
pretty much my boss wants to phase it out
16:05
<alkisg>
Sure, np there
16:06
<Bruckner_2>
but we've got about 100 thin clients at least out there
16:06
and they're not going to be happy
16:06* alkisg doesn't really like thin clients, he prefers ltsp fat clients (diskless)
16:07
<gbti>
because its easy to mantain?
16:08
<alkisg>
No, because thin clients don't work well for multimedia applications, and nowadays the web is full of multimedia
16:08
<Bruckner_2>
we've got the issue too, that the thin clients are again, and the ones they buy aren't cheap
16:08
you're correct
16:09
the more 'modern' things become, the shittier the thin client experience becomes
16:09
<alkisg>
Yup, but netbooted fat clients work fine though
16:09
<Bruckner_2>
gotcha
16:10
<alkisg>
!4k
16:10
<ltsp`>
4k: Imagine a 4k display updated at 60 fps. It needs 3840×2160×32×60 bits per second, i.e. 16 gbps. Normal HD displays need 4 gbps. Thin clients will have much trouble getting all that through the local network...
16:10
<alkisg>
Thin clients can't cope with hd video, but fat clients can handle it normally
16:11
<Bruckner_2>
How are you implementing ltsp, how many clients, type of organization?
16:11
<alkisg>
And scrolling a window is kinda like watching a video, it needs a lot of fps too
16:11
http://www.ltsp.org/stories/widget-map/?location=Greece
16:12
1000+ schools, each school has a modest server and about 12 clients. Old clients automatically become thin clients, newer ones are fat.
16:12
<Bruckner_2>
nice
16:14
what window manager do you use?
16:14
<alkisg>
metacity, part of gnome-flashback
16:14
<Bruckner_2>
I'll look it up
16:15
I've taking over research of ltsp for the team, I appreciate your input
16:16
Is the server Ubuntu based?
16:21
<alkisg>
Yes, the servers are ubuntu-based
16:21* alkisg needs to go, bb all

hi, is there any updated version on the gentoo's ltsp install guide? kicktoo-0.4.5.tar.gz and kicktoo-0.5.0.tar.gz were hosted on some dutch server that appears gone for good, there is no real version history on the kicktoo github repository, and the current kicktoo from the github repo seems to have an entirely changed syntax
16:48
or, similarly, does someone happen to have kicktoo-0.4.5.tar.gz or kicktoo-0.5.0.tar.gz ?

ok, fixing quickstart's ebuild by using its github address makes that work... but it doesn't work with quickstart at all it seems :(
