<Alex____>
Hi folks,
06:39
<alkisg>
Hello
06:40
<Alex____>
I am in the process of setting up a network with LTSP at a veterinary hospital in Canberra, Australia. I have a few things that I have been unable to solve so far.
06:40
<alkisg>
Shoot
06:41
<Alex____>
The LTSP server is running Debian Jessie, and when a client connects and uses the scroll wheel, it appears really jerky. This is most pronounced while using Chromium. Is that a server side resources issue?
06:42
<alkisg>
!thin-client-bandwidth
06:42
<ltsp>
I do not know about 'thin-client-bandwidth', but I do know about these similar topics: 'thin-clients-bandwidth'
06:42
<alkisg>
!thin-clients-bandwidth
06:42
<ltsp>
thin-clients-bandwidth: A small explanation why thin clients can't perform well with video, lots of screen updates etc: https://sourceforge.net/p/ltsp/mailman/message/35694699/
06:42
<alkisg>
You can read an explanation in that ^ message that I wrote
06:42
The best thing to do is switch to diskless ltsp fat clients instead
06:42
What are your client specs, i.e. which cpu and how much ram?
06:43
<Alex____>
They are Intel NUC machines with Atom CPUs
06:44
Let me find that out exactly....
06:45
DE3815TYKE
06:47
Intel Atom E3815 @1.46Ghz
06:48
4GB RAM
06:48
<alkisg>
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Atom+E3815+%40+1.46GHz
06:48
Ouch, that's a bit low, but with 4 GB RAM it'll still run better as a fat client rather than as thin
06:48
So what you need to do is to install a desktop environment inside the chroot
06:49
Or, you could have used the new method to install ltsp, which is called ltsp-pnp and doesn't use chroots:
06:49
!ltsp-pnp
06:49
<ltsp>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
06:49
<alkisg>
...I think there's a tutorial for jessie somewhere as well
06:50
The fastest way to try it now, is `sudo ltsp-chroot apt-get install your-favorite-de`, like mate-desktop or whatever else you prefer
06:52
<Alex____>
So the aim there is to have a netbooted fat-client instead of the thin-client that I am running now, and by using the CPU and RAM of the terminal achieve a net gain in performance?
06:53
<alkisg>
Right
06:53
Because only disk data will travel on the local network, not screen data
06:53
And disk data for a video is e.g. 1 mbps, while screen data for the same video is 2 gbps
06:53
<Alex____>
Ok, got it.
06:54
<alkisg>
And once you've installed the DE in the chroot, you can switch between thin/fat mode with a single line in lts.conf, LTSP_FATCLIENT=True or False
06:54
<Alex____>
That is pretty cool.
06:54
<alkisg>
Ideally your clients should have at least 1000 cpu benchmark score
06:55
<Alex____>
I am guessing I will need to build a new netboot image every time I make a change?
06:55
<alkisg>
The 362 that they have now is low, it's similar to a pentium 4 @ 3GHz
06:55
So the apps will launch a bit slower than they used to, when they were launched from the server
06:55
But the screen updates will be much smoother
06:55
Yes, when you install new software you need to run ltsp-update-image, if you're using NBD
06:55
If you're using NFS, you don't need to run it
06:56
<Alex____>
Ok, I'll give that a go. Thanks for the help.
