<Zsolt>
i have a question. i want to use ltsp fat client (Ubuntu). how many is the recomended RAM size of the client?
05:06
<muppis>
Zsolt, same as for locally installed.
05:08
<Zsolt>
muppis: ok, i understand. thanks.

hi
06:39
can someone give me a help?
06:41
i am running ltsp fat mode
06:42
anyways I have set up icewm to be default and have the .icewm config in a dir that I would like to symlink to users dir
06:42
so all users have the same setup
06:42
it works fine somewhere else
06:42
but here it only works if I copy the dir
06:42
any clue why is this,
06:43
the symlinked dir is readable and the cintents of it also
06:44
<alkisg>
Try specifying SSH_FOLLOW_SYMLINKS=True in lts.conf
06:46
<csaba_>
aha
06:46
i thought it must be something like this
06:46
where is that lts.conf?
06:47
in /opt/ltsp ?
06:48
do I need to issue a command after i set this
06:48
like update image or something?
06:48
<Appiah>
just reboot the client
06:48
no its in /var/lib/tftpboot/ somewhere
06:49
/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
06:49
<csaba_>
in the global section
06:54
success!

<sameerthahir>
dear all, I have setup Ltsp using debian lenny and am really enjoying it :) , but I want to replace the default LDM with GDM can anyone suggest a way for it, thanks
07:23
<Appiah>
ouch
07:23
may I ask why?
07:25
<sameerthahir>
Appiah, It just a matter of preference
07:25
<Appiah>
what is it that you miss in LDM that GDM has?
07:26
(Sorry I dont have an I answer to your question , just curious about your problem)
07:26
<sameerthahir>
well its not a problem, I just wanted to know if it was possible, because when someone asks I can do it. :)
07:27
people ask all the questions, just because its a thin client haha
07:27
<Appiah>
:D
07:28
<sameerthahir>
so I should have answers, apart from that I think LDM can be customized the same way like GDM
07:28
so it doesnt make much difference
07:29
<Appiah>
It can , but if it can replaced I have no idea
07:29
think LDM handles alot
07:29
<sameerthahir>
right, I have read about it
07:29ogra has quit IRC
07:30
<sameerthahir>
probably I think its better to make LDM look like GDM, so people dont ask any question
07:30

put a big text there that says GDM Version : 2.30-LDM
07:32
<sameerthahir>
haha
07:33
<alkisg>
LDM handles the ssh-based authentication. GDM can't do that, so it can't replace LDM for thin client installations.
07:33
<sameerthahir>
alkisg, oh thanks for that answer, what about KDM
07:33
:D
07:33
<alkisg>
Nope, no DM can do ssh authentication
07:33
It's specific to LTSP
07:34
In the future an LTSP dev is developing a "libpamssh-something" pam module. If that's implemented, then other DMs could be used as well.
07:34
<Appiah>
is that underway or a dream?
07:34robehend1 has joined #ltsp
07:34
<alkisg>
An initial implementation was written 6 months ago
07:34
And that's still the current status. :)
07:35
<sameerthahir>
I see
07:35
<Appiah>
cool , anywhere you can find it?
07:36
<alkisg>
https://code.launchpad.net/~sbalneav/ltsp/libpam-sshauth
07:36
<sameerthahir>
alkisg, but can I use xdmcp to communicate , avoiding the ssh and use other DMs
07:36
<alkisg>
sameerthahir: sure. That's not LTSP though.
07:36
<sameerthahir>
alkisg, right
07:37
<alkisg>
It's XDMCP. No sound, no localapps, no localdev etc
07:37
<sameerthahir>
yeah
07:37
alkisg, thanks a lot for that information, I guess I will try to hang around in the channel more often.
07:37
:)
07:38* alkisg would love it if all those sound/local* modules were implemented as login hooks or something, so that they'd work from XDMCP too... :-/
07:38
<sameerthahir>
ah
07:40
one more question although I am able to login into the graphical mode, I am unable to login in the console (Ctrl-Alt-F1-F6). It does not accept password and returns to login prompt
07:40
<alkisg>
In the graphical screen you're logging in on the server via ssh
07:40
In the console you're trying to logon locally on the client. There are no user accounts there.
07:41
You can unlock the root account in the chroot if you want, or use SCREEN_08=shell to get a shell there without logging in
07:42
!SCREEN_08
07:42

<ltspbot>
alkisg: "SCREEN_02" :: to get a root shell on an Ubuntu thin client: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ClientTroubleshooting#Using%20a%20shell%20SCREEN
07:43
<alkisg>
:)
07:43
<Appiah>
:D
07:43
what assings these different screens anyways
07:43
<alkisg>
Ubuntu "deletes" tty[2-6] so they're available for reuse
07:44
Debian uses NFS and it was difficult to delete those gettys
07:44
So vagrantc proposes SCREEN_08 instead of SCREEN_02...
07:44
<Appiah>
I remeber the first time I tried to use SCREEN .. thougt I could use anything for various things
07:45
<alkisg>
Nah, the available options are in /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ltsp/screen.d/
07:45
<Appiah>
yupp found that later
07:45
and in the mailinglist people started sharing screen scripts
07:46
like the one for gparted
07:46
<alkisg>
I posted that on the ML? I thought I put it on the wiki only...
07:46
:D
07:46
<Appiah>
oh
07:46
maybe I'm confusing things

Hi, I'm trying to do a diskless setup; not exactly LTSP, but I figure this is a good place to ask, right?
12:50
I have DHCP and TFTP correctly working and I think NFS is configured correctly
12:51
my client gets its kernel and initrd and starts trying to boot, then stops after getting DHCP information. Here is a screenshot: http://www.naptastic.com/david/bootfail.jpg

I have a LTSP setup in lenny, my problem is screensaver. for every new student I'm adding new user by adduser command. If some terminal remains idle screensaver comes up and it slows entire system. How can i turn it off. Also how can i customize the environment for new users?
13:52
<mgariepy>
uday, the problem is that the screen saver is animated and comsume a LOT of bandwith, what i do is to lock it to blank-only
13:52
with that command : gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --set --type string /apps/gnome-screensaver/mode blank-only
13:52
as root on the server.
13:54
the gconftool-2 command will force the screen saver to blank-only for every user
13:54
<uday>
I'm using lxde
13:54
<mgariepy>
ho,
13:55
<uday>
or may be i can switch to xfce4
13:55
<mgariepy>
sorry then, i cannot help you with LXDE, i haven't used it.
13:55
if you set the screen saver to blank only on lxde does it take all the ressources ?
