asmok: yes, we're helping gbaman implement it...

we face a problem , our class has one host and 30 thin client with LTSP powered by Edubuntu 12.04 . We wanted to teach some windows program like msoffice ,google sketchup . I install to playonlinux in host but cannot be accessed in client or diskless workstation . Any solution on how to do this?

sivasan, hi
11:08
You've come to the right place, but on sundays it's a bit quiet here...
11:08
<sivasan>
hi
11:09
<Hyperbyte>
So first off, my advice is, stick around (for a very long time even maybe)... :)
11:09
You could install an IRC client so you have some software on your computer that connects to this channel, instead of some web application.
11:09
But eventually someone will come around who can help you... there's also generally more people here on weekdays.
11:10
Second, I have no idea how playonlinux works, but if it's wine based then you have a small problem (not one that can't be overcome, but a small problem nonetheless)
11:10
<sivasan>
ok will do so thanks
11:10
<Hyperbyte>
Wine installs applications to the user profile, not to the system.

<gdi2k_>
bennabiy, when you say "doesn't work" exactly what happens? do you see the audio device?
15:19
<bennabiy>
gdi2k_: I am not actually at the machines which are not working, just trying to gather some things to try when I get access to them.
15:20
I mostly use thin clients, so am a little rusty when it comes to fat clients.
15:20Parker955 is now known as Parker955_Away

<gdi2k_>
bennabiy, could just be muted - check in pulse audio if you see the devices. also check lsusb and lspci to check they are there. if not (and it is onboard), check it is enabled in the bios
15:20
<bennabiy>
gdi2k_: I know it is enabled in the bios, or else livecd would not work
15:22
<gdi2k_>
I've heard some more experienced people here (I think it may have been alkisg) that pulse audio on fat clients is not deployed in a recommended way, but it should work fine. I've had some oddities with it, like USB audio device detection did not work in Ubuntu 12.04. not sure if it's working in 14.04
15:22
or maybe that was for thin clients?
15:23
but we did have USB audio device detection issues with fat clients on 12.04
15:23
(reboot required for the device to show up)
15:23
and sometimes the device would vanish mid session
15:23

<gothaggis>
hello - i installed cups for printing on the ltsp server, added my printer - chrooted to tc image, installed cups and cups client, rebuilt image - however when i go to print something on the tc (from firefox) no printer is listed. am i missing a step?
15:47
(firefox is a local app)
15:55
and the other minor issue i am having is the login screen isn't centered , nor is the desktop background. not sure what is going on, as both of these were centered on my old server (ubuntu 10.04) - with this 14.04 server they are moved to the right...so half the desktop is black, the right half has my desktop background.
15:55
<gdi2k_>
gothaggis, can you move the cursor to the black portion of the screen?
15:55
<gothaggis>
yep
15:56
<gdi2k_>
and it stops at the edge of the right side of the screen?
15:57
<gothaggis>
my desktop background image starts about in the middle of the screen (not quite) and shows to the right. so its black from the left side of the screen until almost the middle of the screen.
15:58
oh weird
15:58
i can move the curser off the right side of the screen
15:58
but not left
15:58
maybe it is a fluxbox setting
15:58
<gdi2k_>
it sounds like the virtual desktop is larger than the physical
15:58
check "xrandr" on the command line
16:00
<gothaggis>
yeah i guess thats it
16:00
it shows screen 0: minimum 320x200, current 2304 x 1024, maximum 32767 x 32767
16:01
and says vga connected 1280x1024
16:01
i'm not sure of correct res for monitor honestly
16:01
how do i go about changing current to be 1280x1024?
16:02
<gdi2k_>
what's the name of the VGA device?
16:02
VGA or VGA1 or something?
16:03
xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024
16:03
you may need to change the output name if it is different on your system (mine uses VGA1)
16:04
<gothaggis>
yeah mine is vga1
16:04
<gdi2k_>
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024
16:05
<gothaggis>
how do i make the virtual desktop the correct size tho?
16:06
it seems to be incorrect even before logging in (on the login screen)
16:06
<gdi2k_>
gothaggis, did that not do anything?
16:06
<gothaggis>
nope
16:06
<gdi2k_>
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024 -fb 1280x1024
16:07
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024 --fb 1280x1024
16:07
<gothaggis>
that worked
16:07
is that something i will have to run on every thin client?
16:08
<gdi2k_>
you can add that as an XRANDR option to lts.conf
16:08
(for all client,s or just specific ones)
16:10
<gothaggis>
i see options for xrandr output and xrandr mode - what about the --fb option?
16:10
<gdi2k_>
you can put this in your lts.conf for the affected clients:
16:10
XRANDR_COMMAND_0_alkisg="xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024 --fb 1280x1024"
16:10
oops
16:10
<gothaggis>
oh awesome, thanks!
16:10
<gdi2k_>
XRANDR_COMMAND_0="xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024 --fb 1280x1024"
16:12
it's not documented in the man page for lts.conf but you can read about it here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp/+bug/942608
16:12
I think it needs to be XRANDR_COMMAND_01
16:12
<gothaggis>
great thanks
16:13
<gdi2k_>
anyways, I'm off now. if you find that it works for the login screen, but then sets itself back after logging in, you can look into this: http://sourceforge.net/p/ltsp/mailman/message/31875955/
16:15
<gothaggis>
ok thanks very much
16:18
drat doesnt work after a reboot at all
16:19
oh i think it is _0
16:21
no, that didn't work either
16:40
fixed it for the desktop by putting that command in the fluxbox startup menu, not the best solution but it works for now
16:53
so back to my printing issue, on the local thin client i see a /etc/cups/client.conf file that just has "ServerName server" i'm thinking this should be "ServerName 192.168.10.10" (my cups server) - but i have no idea how this file gets generated. i create client.conf in the chroot but after resetting the thinclient it still shows "ServerName server"
16:55
oh but 'ping server' returns right value
