Hi everyone, I've got a problem. My LTSP server works fine, I can connect with local account, but I want to connect via LDAP server, so I connect him and all was OK, I can get the account with "getent passwd", so the connection works fine. But for some mysterious reasons when I put the password and username it's okay in syslog and in auth... I might be not clear, feel free to ask! LTSP 5|Ubuntu 12.10|External DHCP

anyone how uses debian chroots on an an ubuntu server on? problem seems to be related to this old bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=514877 i removed the script witch call locale-gen /usr/share/ltsp/plugins/ltsp-build-client/Debian/025-locales but something still tries to start locale-gen witches broke the hole installalltion of the debian chroot
14:29
<alkisg>
It sounds like you're using the ubuntu plugins, not the debian ones
14:30
Try re-running your ltsp-build-client command with VENDOR=Debian in front

arg would love to get debain chroot working with ltsp-cluster

<markit>
hi alkisg, I've tested epoptes remote help yesterday, with vnc it's ok, with screen does not work. In my computer I entered: socat tcp-listen:5500,keepalive=1 stdio,raw,echo=0
14:50
do I have to enter it from terminal or xterminal?
14:53
<alkisg>
xterm -e socat tcp-listen:5500,keepalive=1 stdio,raw,echo=0
14:53
<meamy>
alkisg: whoa DEBUG=1 is kind of cool would have saved me a lot of time :). even with VENDOR=Debian ltsp-client-bluild still loads the ubuntu plugins. i guess that is the problem (i remove already the --ltsp-cluster parameter)

alkisg: btw, epoptes has a client part that needs to be installed in clients, and provides connectivity with the epoptes server I think. The UI is in the server package, then. Do you refer to it as "Epoptes gui" or a different name (i.e. epoptes control center / whatever)?
14:57
because I've seen some in the italian ML is confused and calls it "epoptes client"

ehm, screen -l -S ra ?
15:12
I did not used it
15:12
my whole command was as you gave me
15:13

So that part does work
15:13
Now try again, from inside epoptes
15:13
Put alkisg.dyndns.org

And "console" as the connection method
15:14

15:20
<markit>
the same locally
15:20

Let me see if I can get the error message here...

E.g. you might be missing screen or socat in the VM
15:21
<markit>
a xterm opens in epoptes and mine closes at the same time
15:21
AH!
15:21
let me check, but should be a epopted dependencies... maybe I'm using stock ubuntu version not greek repo
15:22
<alkisg>
If you have epoptes installed there, yeah, they would be

markit: try one more time

ok
15:22
<alkisg>
Please set a terminal type.
15:23
<markit>
where?
15:23
<alkisg>
I.e. you probably don't have a TERM variable
15:23
Are you running that from the epoptes dialog?
15:23
<markit>
I've tried to connect with you and failed
15:23
yes
15:23
<alkisg>
Open a gnome-terminal
15:23
echo $TERM inside that
15:23
Then run epoptes inside that
15:23
<markit>
ok (Konsole ;P)
15:23
ok
15:23
<alkisg>
And then try again to connect to me
15:25
So the problem is that $TERM is not defined when you run epoptes from within KDE
15:25
I don't remember if that's true for Gnome too
15:26
...meh so the epoptes devs are too geeky to use the menus, that's where the problem was :P
15:26
markit: do file a bug in epoptes about that
15:26
<markit>
ok, thanks a lot
15:28
may I disconnect the Vm from your assistance or do you have something to check there?

15:43
Just the repository part, you don't need the other stuff
15:44
Basically, add-apt-repository --yes ppa:ts.sch.gr etc
15:44
But you need to remove the 12.04 ltsp and nbd first, and remove their configuration files
15:44
Because they're not compatible with the newer ltsp/nbd versions in the greek schools ppa and in wheezy
15:45
The differences are much easier switching from/to nfs/nbd, different kernel command line options etc etc

Is there any trick to support guest login with Ubuntu LTSP? I have added LDM_GUESTLOGIN to the lts.conf file and have the guest login button. But when I check it I get a "no response from server, restarting..." message. I can log in with a user account and password though
20:20
*click it
20:26Parker955_Away is now known as Parker955
20:40
<alkisg>
gp: also specify LDM_USERNAME and LDM_PASSWORD in lts.conf
20:41
The "guest login" actually means "login using a specified username/password"

20:42
<vagrantc>
it predates ubuntu's "guest login" feature
20:42
so it seems easy to confuse the two
20:43
it would actually be really cool to implement something more like that, though
20:43
although just switching to lightdm might make that easier.
20:47
<gp>
Oh I gotcha
20:47
So I should just create a literal guest account with a username and password for now
20:55
<vagrantc>
it defaults to the auto-generated hostname.
20:55
i.e. ltsp127
20:55
i use ssh keys and passwordless accounts, so that way users can't change the password and mess with things that way.
20:56
<gp>
Hah good point
20:57
Is there somewhere that configures the "/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default" file? It keeps getting overwritten while I am tinkering with the image and then I can't connect
20:59
Specifically, I don't want the quiet splash so I remove that. And then I add IPAPPEND 3
21:01
<vagrantc>
it's generated from /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ltsp/update-kernels
21:01
you want to specify /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ltsp/update-kernels.conf: IPAPPEND=3
21:01
and then: ltsp-chroot /usr/share/ltsp/update-kernels
21:02
you may need to create update-kernels.conf
21:02
<gp>
Ah I think I was missing the ltsp-chroot /usr/share/ltsp/update-kernels step
21:05
<vagrantc>
you should only need to run that step once
21:06
well, only once after editing update-kernels.conf
21:10
<gp>
Should that carry through ltsp-update-image? Cause I tested it and IPAPPEND 3 doesn't carry over
21:10
for some reason
21:10
it actually reset the /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ltsp/update-kernels.conf file
21:10
<vagrantc>
ltsp-update-image should call ltsp-chroot /usr/share/ltsp/update-kernels and ltsp-update-kernels ... but there may be issues in the order it calls them.
21:11
that sounds like a bug in ltsp-update-image...
21:12
i don't know the exact state of things on ubuntu 12.04 ... we've done a lot of changes in the last year...
21:12
<gp>
Okay
21:12
<vagrantc>
gp: you could file a bug on launchpad
21:12
it really should not reset that file.
21:13
<gp>
I will test it once more to verify
21:13
I am running on basically a fresh install off the cd
21:13
Which could also be the problem
21:18
Yea. I just added IPAPPEND=3 to /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ltsp/update-kernels.conf. Then did sudo ltsp-chroot /usr/share/ltsp/update-kernels. Then did sudo ltsp-update-image. Then checked the update-kernels.conf file and IPAPPEND=3 is gone

So I just shot off an email to Warren asking for his assistance in figuring out this last piece. Regardless of what I try, this x86_64 build is just not working.
22:23
<Hyperbyte>
Enslaver, what's going wrong with it?
22:23
I'm no expert, but shoot... who knows. :)
22:23
<Enslaver>
The X is not starting, ldm core dumps
22:23
The issue doesnt appear to be ldm related though
22:24
it calls the /usr/share/ltsp/xinitrc which calls the screens for the vty's and starts the preferred display manager assigned by ldminfod on the server
22:24
running xinit manually works, so i know its not a driver issue, i can pull up the graphical display

<Enslaver>
So i'm wondering if there isnt some kernel option im missing or something called in libexec that it doesnt agree with
22:25
<Hyperbyte>
So you can start X manually, but via the init scripts it breaks?
22:25
<Enslaver>
correct
22:26
i can't startx manually though
22:26
but i can xinit
22:26
startx complains about MTRR's, but this latest kernel compile should fix that
22:30
<Hyperbyte>
mhmm
22:31
Sounds like kernel issue alright.

Yeah thats fine, I just need a repo for the client rpms
22:36
I ping'd the redhat guys for EPEL space
22:36
<warren>
EPEL needs a package review, which would be very difficult for LTSP
22:37
for now let's just test it in our private repo
22:37
<Enslaver>
alright, once this is at the next stage i'll be setting up a local repo for testing
22:37
<warren>
got high speed web space? I can put it on my university's Linux mirror server.
22:37
<Enslaver>
yeah
22:37
<warren>
ok
22:38

what i've done is on launchpad, but I have VM's that are more portable and up to date
22:38

Enslaver: did you get features that I didn't attempt to support to work?
22:38
<Enslaver>
But I host everything currently on a vmx server
22:38
<warren>
Enslaver: and did you modernize the nbd package?
22:38
<Enslaver>
esx*
22:38
I have NBD 3.2 i'm currently in process of building a spec for
22:38
<jammcq>
warren: hey
22:38
<Enslaver>

22:38

<warren>
ooh
22:38
shit
22:39
EL6 is missing nbd ko?
22:39
<Enslaver>
yup
22:39
its only in your thinclient rpms
22:39
<warren>
Enslaver: perhaps we're better off providing our own kernel for EL6 clients
22:39
<Enslaver>
i have a rebuilt kernel with them
22:39
<warren>
Enslaver: it can be much smaller that way
22:39
<Enslaver>
about to copy that to the client
22:39
yup, you build in DM_THIN support?
22:40
<warren>
dunno, but config change is easy
22:40
<Enslaver>
I took a lot of the crap out, built in wireless support and NBD
22:40
I can even go smaller or have alternate kernels for thin/fat

space is less of an issue these days. Aim for ONE kernel that will satisfy everyone if possible.
22:40
that is compatible with the EL6 userspace, which is i686 right?
22:41
<Enslaver>
Well i686 is compatible, but my goal is for i686 and x86_64
22:41
i686 is working great, thanks a lot to your code, but still x86_64 is having an issue
22:41
<warren>
ahh yes
22:41
brb
22:42
<Enslaver>
wish you were in irc 5 minutes before, i actually typed out the entire issue
22:47
<warren>
Enslaver: you trying to make a single kernel.src.rpm that will output the desired i686 and x86_64 kernels?
22:47
<Enslaver>
no
22:47
you referring to the X86 flag set?
22:47
<warren>
Enslaver: did you create a fedora account? you can throw scratch .src.rpm builds into the koji build system for targets like EL6 and Fedora, very convenient.
22:48
<Enslaver>
ah nice, yes i created one
22:48
mock btw, very useful
22:49
<warren>
Enslaver: btw, you working on Fedora LTSP integration as well, or only EL6?
22:49
Enslaver: what's your fedora account name?
22:49
<Enslaver>
Dunno, I was discussing that earlier.
22:49
<warren>
Enslaver: running any fedora boxes yourself?
22:49
<Enslaver>
yes, i have fc17
22:50
<warren>
Enslaver: btw, would it help your employer to give you more time to work on LTSP if incoming donations went to your company to help cover your salary?
22:50
<Enslaver>
I really would like to get this working properly in EL6, then get fat clients going, then i'll work on getting it in fc17, but that just sounds like it will eat my lunch with time.
22:51
<warren>
what type of fat clients?
22:51
<Enslaver>
Well that depends if I can get unionfs-fuse working right
22:51
<warren>
oooh

:)
22:51
<warren>
interesting

22:51

ltsp-moo
22:52
copy on write fuse module
22:52
<warren>
at the file level, not block level right?
22:52
<Enslaver>
correct
22:52
<warren>
Fedora's dm-snap livecd overlays haven't worked well
22:52
block-level overlay
22:52
<Enslaver>
i looked at those
22:52
<warren>
it's garbage
22:53
<Enslaver>
i thought fuse might have some native cow implementation
22:53
<warren>
fuse itself is pretty stupid
22:53
it does whatever you implement
22:54
err, but why do you need an overlay filesystem?
22:54
<Enslaver>
you'll see
22:54
i've been having quite some fun with nfs, nbd, rwtab and stateless devices
22:57
<warren>
ok, so you have changes on top of ltsp upstream source and updated .spec files?
