<sweetpi>
is there a kernel arg to specify the ltsp server? cant remember the name of it
02:31
<alkisg>
A kernel arg to do what?
02:32
<sweetpi>
alkisg: ssh ip
02:32
<alkisg>
I don't understand what you're asking, sorry
02:33
<sweetpi>
alkisg: different network, nfs. kernel and initrd are downloaded over http. I just need to specify the ltsp ssh server as kernel arg
02:34
<alkisg>
Ah :)
02:35
If NFS_SERVER is set, it should default to that then
02:37
<sweetpi>
its trying nbd for some reason, I figured I needed to specify the ltsp server. iirc it works IN the network fine
02:38
<alkisg>
If it's trying nbd, then set "nbdroot="
02:38
It'll get the default SERVER from there
02:39
<sweetpi>
using "netboot=nfs nfsroot=nfsip:/path nbdroot=". still trying nbd
02:39
<alkisg>
I mean "nbdroot=THESERVERIPHERE"
02:40
If the problem is that it tries to use nbd instead of nfs, then that a different problem...
02:40
<sweetpi>
still says "Failed to connect to NBD server."
02:40
<alkisg>
Right, you didn't switch to nfs then
02:40
distro/version?
02:40
<sweetpi>
iirc nfs works find IN the network
02:40
s/find/fine/
02:41
debian squeeze
02:41
<alkisg>
So it's using nfs by default, you didn't change any initscripts, right?
02:42
<sweetpi>
no
02:42
guess I should test nfs inside before wasting your time :)
02:53
hmm nfs isnt working inside the network either.. someone must have been messing with stuff
03:00
It's still trying nbd instead of nfs.. Is there anywhere that would be overridden?
03:10
<alkisg>
Last paragraph here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPWithoutNFS
03:13
<sweetpi>
yeah, everything is exported. but the client looks like its defaulting to nbd even when I specify nfs
03:17
alkisg: It says "Running /scripts/nfs-top...done." gets an ip then says "Failed to connect to NBD server"
03:29
<komunista>
sweetpi: I am happy NBD user under debian/squeeze :-)
03:30
sweetpi: but when I playng with switching NFS / NBD I create new client croot always
03:30
<sweetpi>
komunista: same here, but we use nfs for testing and nbd for production
03:31
<komunista>
ah, lot of typos...
03:32
<sweetpi>
mainly from trying to get wireless thinclients to work
03:33
<komunista>
for me is wireless wery slow to use with SSH only, without X...
03:35
<sweetpi>
these were all g and n wireless with good signals so it worked really good
03:36
<komunista>
sweetpi: you are mixing things from NFS/testing and NBD/production?
03:37
<sweetpi>
after the testing is done we build nbd images
03:37NOMADICUS has quit IRC
03:38
<komunista>
I know only one abut this (I never mix it):
03:38
when I try NFS client simple switch to NBD by generating the NBD image, it do not works for me
03:39
I don't play with this and generate new client's chroot with NBD switch...
03:39
<sweetpi>
we have never had a problem until now, I think someone must have changed something without letting me know. and of course everyone is sleeping
03:44F-GT has quit IRC
03:47
<komunista>
you are writing about kernel args... what do you have in pxelinux.cfg/default?
03:50
<sweetpi>
the only thing special im passing is "netboot=nfs nfsroot=serverip:/opt/ltsp/i386"
03:51
which worked last time I tested it. thats why I thing someone changed something in the chroot
03:51
<komunista>
in my old NFS copy I have: append ro initrd=initrd.img quiet root=/dev/nfs ip=dhcp boot=nfs
03:51
<sweetpi>
s/thing/think/
03:52
<komunista>
sweetpi: I am not machine, I understand typos :-D
03:52
<sweetpi>
:)
03:54
<komunista>
I can't help more ...
03:56
<sweetpi>
adding "boot=nfs" worked, thanks :)
03:56
now to find out why we never had to add that
03:58
<komunista>
sweetpi: nice :-)

salomon_: except for the message, what's your actual problem? It hangs when trying to login?
13:52
<salomon_>
No, it says invalid card, and then it ask me the user again, so I can't login
13:53
I'm entering the correct user and password and it works since I can login with that user on the server
13:53
<alkisg>
So you're seeing the login screen (ldm), then enter a username/password, and then X resets and you're prompted again for a username/password?

yes, after I entet the user and password it shows some errors not in X mode and then X resets and it ask the user and password again. befores the invalid card number error it shows an error that starts whit sys/devices/virtusl.../sysvendor: No such file or directory

<alkisg>
Hmmm lubuntu...
14:01
<salomon_>
But I have not installed compiz
14:01
<alkisg>
I don't know if that uses compiz or not. Ignore that
14:01
In gnome, even if one doesn't install compiz, visual effects are enabled so manually declaring metacity is needed
14:01
<salomon_>
lubuntu uses LXDE, not GNOME :)
14:01

14:02
Try this: sudo gedit /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
14:02
[Default]
14:02
SCREEN_02=shell
14:02
SCREEN_07=ldm
14:02
Reboot the client - this way you'll get a local screen in vt2
14:02
So you'll be able to look at the local logs
14:02
<salomon_>
ok, let me try
14:04
I don't have a lts.conf file in that directorym should I create it?
14:04
<alkisg>
Yes - if the rest of the tftp files are there, of course
14:05
I.e. if you have a pxelinux.0 in that directory, etc
14:05
<salomon_>
yes they are nbi.img, pxelinux.0 and other files
14:05
<alkisg>
OK, create an lts.conf then
14:05
with those 3 lines
14:05
<salomon_>
ok
14:08
I'm rebooting the client
14:09
I got hte ldm login screen, what should I try?

I checked the ldm.log file and one line says waitid returned an error: Interrupted system call
14:20
<alkisg>
See also xorg.log for errors
14:22
And, with cat /dev/vcs7 you can see the error message which is hidden behind X
14:26
<salomon_>
I'll check /dev/vcs7
14:29
This are the errors
14:30
(process:152): Glib-Warning **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id(0)
14:31
cat: /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/sys_vendor: No such file or directory
14:31
Invalid card number
14:31
and then again cat: ...
14:31
<alkisg>
The user id(0) is quite common, it shouldn't be your actual problem
14:32
I don't know about the other one. Check /var/log/Xorg.7.log too.
14:32
<salomon_>
after that, X resets and ask for the user and password again
14:32
<alkisg>
Check also that user's ~/.xsession-errors
14:32
(on the server
14:32
<salomon_>
ok, I'll check
14:34
I have already check the Xorg.7.log file and I did not saw anithing wrong, I'l check xsessions-errors and then check again Xorg.7.log carefully

15:32
Another question, one of the clients uses serial mouse, but it does not work when ldm shows, how do I configure it?
15:32
<alkisg>
No when you change lts.conf you don't need to update anything
15:33
Search the ubuntultsp wiki, there's a page for serial mice there, and I think it's also in the docs on the topic link

Hi alkisg, I did /usr/sbin/ltsp-update-sshkeys from the server and I can login with one user, I created another user and did that again but I can't login with that new user
23:06
You was helping me some hours ago :)
23:06artista_frustrad has quit IRC
23:06
<alkisg>
salomon_: if ssh keys needed updating, then auth.log shouldn't contain an entry
23:06
The symptoms you describe are the exact same symptoms that we see in gnome with compiz
23:07
The default window manager in gnome has those problems (logging in with one user but not another, and X restarting etc)
23:07
So forcing it to metacity for all user solves that problem
23:07
But I've no idea if lubuntu is using a similar compositing window manager
23:08
If you have an "effects" tab somewhere, try logging in with the problematic user on the server, and setting "effects" to none
23:08
<salomon_>
I can try the solution that works for gnome, can you tell me again what is it?
23:09
<alkisg>
salomon_: can you upload a "ps -ef" to pastebin?
23:09
Maybe that will show what window manager is used...
23:09
!compiz

23:09
<alkisg>
That's the gnome command, not sure if that'll help
23:09
(as it's a specific gnome key, I double lxde will be using that)
23:13
<salomon_>
this is the url for the pastebin http://pastebin.com/wh0AxN3K
23:14
lxde uses openbox
23:15
<alkisg>
Maybe /home/user-that-logs-in/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml has some special settings that enable that user to login?
23:15
(i.e. not crashing)
23:16
You didn't see any errors in the problematic user ~/.xsession-errors, did you?
23:16
<salomon_>
let me check
23:16
<alkisg>
And, did you try an xterm session?
23:17
When I first encountered the gnome compiz problem, I had to "bisect" through all of the "correct user's" ~/.gconf settings to pinpoint it
23:17
<salomon_>
I tryed the xterm session and i logged in, but just at the upper left corner, when I move the mouse cursor to the bottom right corner, the mouse pointer change to the icon that is used when loading something
23:18
<alkisg>
I.e I deleted half of the settings, checked if they worked, then the other half of the settings etc
23:18
OK then something in the session is crashing X
23:19
<salomon_>
ok what should I do first? check .xsession-errors for the user that can't login?
23:19
<alkisg>
Yes, that first,
23:19
and then if you don't see anything recognisable try mv'ing any ~/.settings files from your "correct" user to find out what makes the difference between those users
23:19* alkisg has to leave in a couple of minutes...
23:20
