Ubuntu 12.04, Gnome fallback... identical client hardware, different displays for each client though... certain clients are enormously slow with animations. The animation where the top panel slowly moves down while it starts takes a minute... changing desktop background takes half a minute (the actual fading from one background to another)

I'm curious why only on certain clients those animations are so enormously slow, and how I can remedy it.. or else maybe how I can disable all those animations...

Hyperbyte: lack of hardware 3d acceleration?
14:13
<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, definitely that.
14:13
But why only on some clients?
14:13
<alkisg>
lspci -nn -k | grep -A3 VGA on the clients
14:13
Check that they really do have the same cards
14:13
If yes, xorg.log...
14:14
I don't think that the gnome-fallback (no effects) session has animations though...
14:15
gnome-classic.desktop:Exec=gnome-session --session=gnome-classic
14:15
gnome-fallback.desktop:Exec=gnome-session --session=gnome-fallback
14:15
The later shouldn't have any effects

<Hyperbyte>
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27ae] (rev 03)
14:16
100% identical.
14:17
LDM_XSESSION="gnome-session --session=gnome-fallback"
14:17
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: so, glxinfo is the same or different on those clients?
14:17
<Hyperbyte>
I bet I have to execute that one on the client?
14:18
<alkisg>
It needs X access
14:18
<Hyperbyte>
Ah, I can run it on the server?
14:18
<alkisg>
It needs access to the *client* X display :)
14:18
But if you export the necessary variables, sure you can also run it on the server
14:19
<Hyperbyte>
I mean, I can just run it from a server terminal of a logged in user?
14:20
<alkisg>
Yup, same as local, as the X server is one
14:20
<Hyperbyte>
Right.
14:21
I can't say those outputs are identical no.
14:22
<alkisg>
Next, client's xorg.0.log => pastebin
14:22
<Hyperbyte>
The slow one I assume?
14:23
<alkisg>
Both, to be easier to compare
14:28
<Hyperbyte>
http://users.recreatie-zorg.nl/jan/animtroubleshoot/
14:28
'jan' is client without problems, 'bianca' is insanely slow with animations
14:30
<alkisg>
direct rendering: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT set)
14:30
That means software rendering, i.e. it's depending solely on the client CPU
14:30
<Hyperbyte>
Which one? jan or bianca?
14:30
<alkisg>
...your CPU is a lot better, I presume? :D
14:30
Both
14:31
<Hyperbyte>
Interesting.
14:31
Clients are identical.
14:31
<alkisg>
LTSP sets that for thin clients
14:31
So that they at least have 3d active, even if slow
14:32
<Hyperbyte>
Clients are both LTSP Term 1720's. Only difference is in attached displays. Bianca has dual view, with one 21" I think and one 19"
14:32
And I have single screen, one 23"
14:32
<alkisg>
Hrm. There goes the CPU theory, then...
14:32
<Hyperbyte>
I actually thought it was related to that...
14:33
<alkisg>
But the glxinfo is essentially identical, I thought you said it wasn't
14:34
<Hyperbyte>
I ran a diff and they weren't

14:35
Did you see there's some funky things going on in my Xorg log?
14:35
EQ overflowing
14:36
Whatever that means.
14:37
Anyway... any ideas what I need to do to solve this?
14:37
Any idea why it's not using the GPU?
14:38
<alkisg>
I don't think 3D over X really works
14:38* alkisg always uses good clients as fats
14:38
<alkisg>
3d over the network, sorry
14:39
So, you don't have compiz running, do you?
14:39
<Hyperbyte>
How do I check?
14:40
<alkisg>
ps aux|grep compiz
14:40
<Hyperbyte>
Client?
14:40
<alkisg>
Client, gnome-terminal
14:40
Or server, wherever
14:40
Just not locally on the client
14:40
<Hyperbyte>
Ah, okay
14:40

Can you login as jan on the other computer, to test if it's some user setting?
14:42
<Hyperbyte>
Not at this moment
14:42
Bianca won't like that. :)
14:42
I've annoyed her enough for today.
14:43
<alkisg>
You could test with a new user in your client, but that'd only catch half of the cases...
14:43
<Hyperbyte>
She's not here tomorrow, I can try then.
14:43
But I believe it's not user-dependant
14:44
I recall my colleague who doesn't have the same problem (also single display) logged in somewhere else and having insanely slow animations
14:44
But I can't say for 100% sure, so would have to test tomorrow.
14:44
<alkisg>
OK, it does sound strange to be monitor-related though
14:46
<Hyperbyte>
Unfortunately I'm not experiencing the problems myself, else I could test more easily.

muppis: win32-loader: win32-loader.exe can be used to add a "PXE - Network boot" option to the Windows boot manager. It's developed for Debian and it uses gPXE/iPXE for the network booting. You can download a binary from http://ftp.debian.org/debian/tools/win32-loader/unstable/ (if someone could write a wiki page for that it'd be great, a Greek page you can translate as a starting point is available at (1 more message)

alkisg: did you say you had more plans pending for ltsp and ldm
15:59
?
15:59
<alkisg>
vagrantc: I thought the rc for printers was in ldm, but it was in ltsp, I pushed a fix
15:59
I mainly have the sudo bug to fix, the others can wait till post-freeze
16:00
vagrantc: could you test if `sudo gedit` works in wheezy, when ran from a thin client?
16:00
<vagrantc>
as in, post-wheezy?
16:00
<alkisg>
I get access denied...
16:00
<vagrantc>
alkisg: can't really test right now
16:00

Yeah, post-wheezy, I don't have anything major for it
16:00
<vagrantc>
alkisg: run froom the thin client console or in localapps
16:00
?
16:00
<alkisg>
From a thin client session on the server
16:01
The same thing works with XDMCP and NX, but not with LTSP
16:01
<vagrantc>
huh
16:01
<alkisg>
I wonder if it's related to consolekit...
16:01
<muppis>
Opens nicely.
16:01
<alkisg>
muppis: distro/version etc?
16:02
<muppis>
Ubtuntu 12.04, 32 bit client, 64 bit server.
16:02
<alkisg>
muppis: anything "weird" in your installation, that could fix it for you? E.g. nfs home, ldap, ...
16:02
<muppis>
Nope.
16:03
<vagrantc>
alkisg: and it works if logged in on the server directly?
16:03
<alkisg>
OK, then it's probably related to ltsp-pnp, sch-scripts, bindfs or the other stuff we're using
16:03
vagrantc: yup
16:04* alkisg will test with a thin chroot generated with ltsp-build-client...
16:04* vagrantc wonders what magic allows that to work
16:05
<alkisg>
Ah, although muppis is using ubuntu ltsp, not debian ltsp, so we have a bit of version mismatching there
16:05
Can't think of anything that would affect sudo though
16:10
<muppis>
What just happened.. At client's root shell I accidentally mountede local hdd as root and ofcourse can't unmount it.
16:13
<alkisg>
lsof /mnt tells you what uses it
16:14
<muppis>
Well, in 1 Gbps network it's quicker to reboot than try to find it out. :)
16:16
When having Client -- Switch -- Switch -- Server -topology is it normal that TFTP times out?
16:16
Both switches are 1Gbps.
16:19
<alkisg>
Works for me
16:20
<vagrantc>
muppis: is it a smart switch? you might have issues if spanningtree is enabled on both or something
16:22
<alkisg>
vagrantc: ah, and another thing to fix before wheezy would be the ltsp logo rectangle in ldm shifting to the left when the user presses enter, have you noticed that in debian?
16:22
<muppis>
vagrantc, from server side first is unmanaged and second is dd-wrt based.
16:22
<vagrantc>
alkisg: i've noticed the login screen shift sometimes ... no idea how to fix
16:22
<alkisg>
It doesn't affect anything, but it's annoying... I"ll have a look after the sudo thing
16:23
<vagrantc>
alkisg: it's like a progress bar ... you know something is happening :)
16:23
<alkisg>
Haha we should be moving it depending on progress then... when it's out of the screen, you're logged in :P
16:24

Good. :D
18:59* alkisg is wondering what other problems the machine id could cause though, because all thin client sessions on the server would have the same machine id... maybe we'll even see less application crashes now :D

Hi Folks, anybody out there who could help me to activate the fglrx-driver in my ltsp-image via chroot-shell ? (fglrx is installed)
20:28
calling aticonfig in chroot results in error: X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication. No supported adapters detected . . .

<muppis>
jori, with Ati in firstplace is kind of luck, if you get it working in linux with closed source drivers. Yet another matter get them working in client.
20:32
<jori>
Same mashine, same release(precise) no problem . . .
20:33
even in ltsp under oneiric it was no problem . . .

even in ltsp image. Unfortunately I had to set up the Image completely new, because an update was not possible.
20:35
now it doesnt work anymore.
20:37
alkisg told me, that from this version on a release update of the image would be possible, finally. But that doesnt resolve my prob here.
20:41
@muppis: Is there any kind of trick how to manage this without the help of gui-jockey?
20:41
<||cw>
jori: you'd need to run that in an actual client, and whatever it generayes copy back to your image
20:41
or if it's scriptable, add it as an rc-script
20:45
<jori>
@muppis: that sounds beyond my newbie-knowledge. Where do I find the files to copy after being successful?
