Greetings. I am excited to be using LTSP. However, I am running into an issue that is likely very simple. Using LM17mate as HOST, I have installed the complete LTSP suite (server, not client). This site http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/setupltsp.shtml says to simply perform a Network Boot to log in to connect and use a terminal session. That doesn't work. How do I connect to a terminal server?
07:58
<work_alkisg>
crimsonmane: mint isn't very well supported, but anyway I don't think that's your issue...
07:59work_alkisg is now known as alkisg
07:59
<alkisg>
Did you run ltsp-build-client etc?
07:59
Did you create an image for the clients to boot from?
08:01
<crimsonmane>
alkisg: i did not run that command. i'm looking at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall which mentions your command.
08:01
<alkisg>
crimsonmane: what are you client specs? cpu, ram? how many clients?
08:01
<crimsonmane>
i dont actually want to use PXE to access terminal server. i want to be able to use a laptop, connect to network via VPN, and then access the terminal server
08:02
<alkisg>
Then you don't want ltsp
08:02
You want x2go or something similar
08:02
!x2go
08:02
<ltsp`>
x2go: x2go is an NX-based suite of applications that allow logging in to a remote X server from any OS. It's much more efficient than VNC over slow network. More info: http://www.x2go.org/
08:02
<alkisg>
ltsp is mainly for netbooted workstations, i.e. pxe
08:02
<crimsonmane>
Never in a million years would i have found x2go
08:02
thanks for pointing me
08:02
<alkisg>
You're welcome
08:15
<crimsonmane>
alkisg: i'd like to be able to support a minimum of 3 clients. does this change your answer (x2go free version seems to support only 2 connections)? Is there an easier/alternate Terminal Server style setup that you might suggets?
08:17
<alkisg>
crimsonmane: where did you see that x2go only supports 2 connections?
08:18
<crimsonmane>
section: Basic features http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:newtox2go 4th bullet
08:18
<alkisg>
Support for as many simultaneous users as the computer's resources will support (NX3 free edition limited you to 2.)
08:18
<crimsonmane>
i misread
08:18
<alkisg>
Yup :)
08:19
<crimsonmane>
may I ask what nx3 is/was ... and if this still applies?
08:19
<alkisg>
https://www.nomachine.com/
08:19
Proprietary program that x2go was based on
08:19
It's still sold for whoever wants it

08:42
<alkisg>
" Last Updated on Saturday, 07 January 2012 04:21 "
08:42
opennx appears dead to me
08:43
And it doesn't seem to include the server part

i have a doubt in RAM consumption of server [17:16] <vasanth> i am having 8 MB RAM in my server and have connected 6 clients so far that too fat client.But my RAM usage is showing full..Any suggestions??
12:02
Need to add RAM or anyother suggestion is there??
12:03
<muppis>
How you describe full?
12:03
<vasanth>
means??
12:04
i dont udersatnd ur question??
12:04
<muppis>
Where you look at it where it shows full usage?
12:04
<vasanth>
on a tool htop and also from free -m
12:06
Will the clients take memory from server??
12:06
you there muppis??
12:07
<muppis>
Don't be so in hurry. I'm here.
12:08
<vasanth>
ok ok
12:08
sorry
12:08
<muppis>
Take a look which application takes the memory.
12:09
<vasanth>
mozilla firefox
12:10
<muppis>
If you use fat, why you run firefox at server?
12:10
<vasanth>
Actually i have boot the user through network
12:11
Eventhough the machine is not a thin client
12:11
Am using client as normal computer
12:12
<muppis>
That's normal case. But fat clients acts like locally installed systems, so they do not run any programs in server.
12:12
If not specified to do so.
12:13
<vasanth>
Everything is installed on my server and takes from my server...my client computer are not having any operating system in their computer
12:14
They are all taking everything from server
12:14
<muppis>
Sorry, but it seems like you don't really know difference between fat and thin client.
12:14
<vasanth>
offcourse
12:15
<muppis>
Both boots up at server, but by default thins runs everything in server and fats runs everything locally.
12:15
<vasanth>
so my environment is thin client
12:15
In that case am using like thin client
12:16
will the client take RAM memory from server??
12:16
<muppis>
In the case that's normal if Firefox eats up memory. Try run it as localapps.
12:16
Thins client does, fats don't.
12:16
<vasanth>
oh now i understood
12:16
And how much RAM did each thin client consumes normally
12:16
??
12:17
So that we need to update the RAM for the amount of users??
12:17
<muppis>
It really depends what user does there.
12:18
<vasanth>
oh
12:18
now i understand clearly
12:18
so i need to update my RAM....isn't??
12:18
<muppis>
How much you have it now and how many users?

hello hello
13:39
thinking of the fat-client variant, i am not able to symlink to the servers root, right?
13:45
<muppis>
Nope. It requires some network based fs to do.
13:55
<minetreu>
thanks!
13:57
i like the thin variant more :) but i can not have the gnome-shell running smooth, compiz no prob, video ok...

anyone familiar with berryterminal? I've only managed for the pi to boot with a message it was waiting for eth0... if i change the cmdline.txt to include server=192.168.1.48 it won't boot the card at all... just a blank screen. no matter how long i leave it there.
21:03
any ideas?
21:24* vagrantc prefers to run LTSP
21:26
<vagrantc>
might be DHCP issues... really have no idea how berryterminal is configured. it uses some software for compatibility with LTSP... but the berryterminal developers haven't really interacted much with LTSP developers... so i have no idea what they've really done.
