<Hyperbyte>
Hec-Thor_, nah, it's irrelevant in this case.
00:14
<Hec-Thor_>
well, you said i needed a graphical session
00:14
how can i google that in a way that it gives me some doc?
00:14
not sure what a graphical sesion means
00:15
a DE?
00:15
<Hyperbyte>
Nah
00:15
X needs to be started
00:16
It's what happens automatically when you run it in SCREEN_07=xfreerdp
00:16
And it doesn't happen in SCREEN_02=xterm, which is why you get the error.
00:19gp has left IRC (gp!~gp@104-14-168-137.lightspeed.rcsntx.sbcglobal.net, Quit: Leaving)
00:21
<Hec-Thor_>
well am i lucky or what
00:21
:p
00:21
<Hyperbyte>
--no auth is not an option
00:21
It's --no-auth
00:21
<Hec-Thor_>
yes, fixed
00:21
<Hyperbyte>
Doesn't help?
00:22
You are making these changes in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf right?
00:22
Because the /etc/lts.conf file shouldn't be used on Ubuntu. You mention it earlier.
00:23
<Hec-Thor_>
of course, changes made, /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
00:24
i don't get why it doesnt start X
00:24
<Hyperbyte>
It does start X
00:24
You're seeing a blank window and a cursor.
00:24
That's graphical, so X is started.
00:25
X = graphical interface for Linux.
00:25
Simply put.
00:26
<Hec-Thor_>
yes, but why does it says xf_pre connect: failed to open display?
00:26
Please check that the $DISPLAY environment variable is properly set. freerdp_pre_connect failed
00:27
<Hyperbyte>
That's only what it says in the terminal right?
00:27
Not in screen_07
00:27
<Hec-Thor_>
yep, in the terminal
00:28
<Hyperbyte>
Right, so, the terminal is non-graphical
00:28
And screen_07 is where X is started, that is graphical.
00:28
<Hec-Thor_>
oh i see your point
00:28
<Hyperbyte>
So xfreerdp cannot be started in the terminal, which is why you're starting it in screen_07
00:28
<Hec-Thor_>
duh
00:28
<Hyperbyte>
The error you're getting is normal behaviour. Expected.
00:28
<Hec-Thor_>
silly me
00:29
<Hyperbyte>
It's not silly, you're new to Linux... have to learn all this stuff at some point...
00:29
I've been there.
00:29
<Hec-Thor_>
how many years have you been a linux user?
00:30
btw, doesn't xfreerdp has a syslog or something?
00:31
<Hyperbyte>
Since 2001.
00:31
But I mostly use Linux for servers, I'm terrible with graphical things.
00:31
As you might have noticed. :-)
00:34
I think the problem you're facing is with xfreerdp somehow. Did you try a Google search for xfreerdp blank screen? I get some interesting results.
00:35
And there might actually be something useful saved in /var/log/ somewhere
00:38
<Hec-Thor_>
well what i read was that if screen was black meant conection failed, that's why i wanted to see what the shell output was, and then i had that great idea of using screen_02
00:38
lol
00:38
<Hyperbyte>
Your RDP server is 192.168.0.103?
00:38
<Hec-Thor_>
yea
00:39
<Hyperbyte>
Type ping -c 4 192.168.0.103 in screen_02
00:43
To see if you can get to the server
00:44
<Hec-Thor_>
lemmese
00:47
woah
00:47
im so ashamed
00:47
lol
00:47
<Hyperbyte>
Let me guess.
00:47
Firewall.
00:47
<Hec-Thor_>
worst
00:47
hahaha
00:47
<Hyperbyte>
Router?
00:48
<Hec-Thor_>
wwwwwwwwwwwww
00:48
<Hyperbyte>
Network cable unplugged?
00:48
<Hec-Thor_>
oooo
00:48
not that much
00:48
lol
00:48
<Hyperbyte>
Server turned off?
00:48
LOL
00:48
<Hec-Thor_>
i said to you earlier i was able to ping
00:48
it was true, from server to client
00:48
never thought the other way around
00:49
so, dhcp was not so good
00:49* Hyperbyte slaps Hec-Thor_ around a bit with a rather large type of fish
00:50
<Hyperbyte>
So, it's all working now? :-)
00:50
<Hec-Thor_>
like a charm
00:51
cant thank you enough
00:51
<Hyperbyte>
You're welcome. I always like it when people venture into Linux. :-)
00:55
<Hec-Thor_>
lets hope i stick around, what is a fact it's that im installing lubuntu in my desktop, firefox eats the shit out of my win7
00:58
<Hyperbyte>
I'm not entirely sure if it'll be much better in Ubuntu, Firefox is a resource hog everywhere.
00:58
<Hec-Thor_>
im so happy i can finally sleep - i was trying to make it work waaaay before i got to your conversation with jujubee
00:58
<Hyperbyte>
Although Ubuntu itself will use less memory than Windows 7, so you'll have more free for Firefox. :-)
00:58
<Hec-Thor_>
any recommendations?
00:58
<Hyperbyte>
How much ram do you have?
00:59
2GB or more?
00:59
<Hec-Thor_>
in the server, yea
00:59
in my desk 1gb
01:00
but here in lubuntu i open lots of tabs and its still 400 mb
01:00
firefox
01:00
in windows its like that for 3 tabs
01:00
i have noticed that always in many soft like gsn3
01:01
vbox
01:01
<Hyperbyte>
Could be that memory management in Linux is better with Firefox than in Windows.
01:02
<Hec-Thor_>
you think?
01:02
haha
01:03
i still cant believe it was a dhcp mistake
01:03
and think i once was a cisco certified
01:04
what happened
01:04
haha
01:05
<Hyperbyte>
:P
01:05
<Hec-Thor_>
hey, i'll let you work now, thanks again
01:05
<Hyperbyte>
How about sleep?
01:05
It's 02:05
01:05
AM.
01:05
:-)
01:06
<Hec-Thor_>
let's go with that lol

<Trym>
Have had LTSP server running for many years. Starting to get old fasioned. Howto upgrade to new version but not mess up the configuration? I use two nic and ubuntu 12.04.
18:41
<vagrantc>
Maijin: probably the nbd server isn't configured?
18:41
Maijin: or you don't have DHCP pointing to the LTSP server for NBD ? although if tftp boot worked... that seems unlikely
18:42
Maijin: depends on your DHCP setup
18:42
<Maijin>
vagrantc: So basically, Network config was working before on the 14.04 chroot
18:43
vagrantc: before this initramfs stuff, I got the Ubuntu logo and bootscreen
18:44
And I've just tried "exec startx" and got a kernel panic :/
18:45
<vagrantc>
Maijin: isn't precise ubuntu 12.04 ?
18:45uXus has left IRC (uXus!~uXus@217.77.222.72, Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
18:46
<vagrantc>
exec startx from the initramfs would definitely kernel panic, as it failed to mount the root filesystem
18:46
<Maijin>
vagrantc: What I meant is, I have tried 14.04
18:46
and it worked
18:46
<vagrantc>
so there's no startx available ... on top of that, "exec startx" isn't how LTSP should start
18:47
<Maijin>
but I got some client that didn't support 14.04 (PAE) so I ltsp-build-client --dist=precise to get the 12.04
18:47
<vagrantc>
oh, does 12.04 support named NBD exports?
18:47
or is it still port-based NBD?

21:03
If you do e.g. RCFILE_01="chmod -x /sbin/ifdown", does it shutdown properly then?
21:05
Trym: just upgrade your server and chroot to 14.04
21:06
Maijin: did you add the greek schools ppa to your chroot sources?
21:06
!greek-schools-ppa
21:06
<ltsp`>
greek-schools-ppa: https://launchpad.net/~ts.sch.gr/+archive/ppa/ supports LTS Ubuntu releases with newer LTSP versions, bug fixes etc
21:11
<markit>
alkisg: btw, is there anything ready for 16.04 experimentation?
21:11
<alkisg>
markit: if you add the greek schools ppa, 16.04 should work fine
21:11
<markit>
alkisg: fabolous, thanks a lot :)
21:12
I've to reboot, bye

21:14
how can I add that ?
21:26
<alkisg>
Maijin: ltsp-chroot -m
21:27
add-apt-repository ppa:ts.sch.gr
21:27
apt-get update
21:27
apt-get dist-upgrade
21:27
exit
21:27
ltsp-update-image
21:28
Maijin: unfortunately ltsp isn't very well maintained in ubuntu, so I support it via a PPA, so personally I recommend it to all Ubuntu/LTSP users

Can you login from LDM?
22:35
<Maijin>
alkisg: LDM provide me an interface yes
22:36
if that's the question
22:36
<alkisg>
Can you login successfully from there?
22:36
<Maijin>
no
22:36
Do i need to add LDM_GUESTLOGIN or LDM_AUTOLOGIN
22:36
and retest
22:36
maybe
22:36
<alkisg>
No
22:36
<Maijin>
I've tried autologin but it loops indefinitely
22:36
<alkisg>
Those are for automating login
22:37
<Maijin>
yes That's why I've tried
22:37
<alkisg>
If you can't login, you surely won't be able to login automatically
22:37
You first need to login manualy
22:37
<Maijin>
and I've also tried to login via command line
22:37
<alkisg>
Put only this in lts.conf:
22:37
[default]
22:37
SCREEN_02=shell
22:37
SCREEN_07=ldm
22:37
Reboot, then press alt+ctrl+f2 to switch to the console
22:37
And ping me for the rest instructions
22:40
<Maijin>
ok
22:40
I'm on ldm
22:40
switching to shell
22:40
alkisg: ping
22:41
<alkisg>
There, try: ssh user@server
22:41
Replace "user" with an existing username
22:41
Leave "server" exactly as it is, don't replace it with anything
22:41
Can you login to the server via ssh as instructed?
22:42
<Maijin>
roflol, just fucked up with the layout and it segfault wait, i'm retrying ;)
22:43
alkisg: yep works
22:43
<alkisg>
Did you get a prompt about trusting the keys etc?
22:44
Did it ask you to type "yes/no"?
22:44
<Maijin>
yep
22:44
Yep I can connect if that's the question
22:44
<alkisg>
OK anyway, let's go to the next step
22:44
alt+ctrl+f7
22:44
from ldm's preferences menu, select "session", and select the xterm session
22:44
Then put the username/password you used in the shell
22:45
If you succeed, you'll get an xterm window
22:45
<Maijin>
yep
22:45
alkisg: works

22:45
(the terminal prompt)
22:46
<Maijin>
user@server (hostname of the server)
22:46
<alkisg>
OK then it's a thin chroot
22:46
(or thin client)
22:46
Now let's see the available sessions
22:47
On the server, so that you can copy/paste more easily: grep -r ^Exec /usr/share/xsessions/
22:47
Paste the output here

22:49
?
22:49
And, did you put the greek schools ppa on your server as well?
22:50
(not only in the chroot)
22:50
<Maijin>
alkisg: oh nop, should I ?
22:50
alkisg: oh it works
22:50
<alkisg>
Yes, ltsp in ubuntu is broken
22:50
<Maijin>
"/usr/lib/gnome-panel/gnome-session-flashback"
22:50
I got a session
22:51
<alkisg>
It sounds that you have a couple of bugs that I solved a while ago, but they won't be published to ubuntu previous versions
22:51
So just add the ppa to your server and dist-upgrade
22:51

Edubuntu is dying, 16.04 will probably be the last release
22:54

:( ok
22:55
alkisg: what do you suggest ? Installing ltsp on a debian and install all the packets from edubuntu separately
22:55
?
22:55
or even Ubuntu
22:56
there is probably a ppa for edubuntu
22:56

22:58
<Maijin>
alkisg: yop
22:58
<alkisg>
Those are not "packages from edubuntu"
22:58
<Maijin>
there is probably a meta package for that
22:58
or a script
22:58
<alkisg>
Edubuntu uses them, the same as any other distribution
22:58
Any number of packages is just an apt-get install command away

vagrantc: Any suggestions from the question relating to udev stuff with LTSP the other evening?
23:04
Or alkisg (or anyone else), having a weird issue with LTSP, given it seems to be ignoring a udev rule that seems to run perfectly fine when run on Raspbian, but not when run an LTSP fat client? The rule simply sets the new /dev/gpiomem device's owner to the gpio group, but it doesn't seem to be running.
23:04
<Maijin>
alkisg: ok
23:04
just log in with ldm
23:04
using my server user/passw
23:05
:D
23:05
<alkisg>
Maijin: so everything's fine? Nice! :)
23:05
<Maijin>
Yep
23:05
Awesome
23:05
I'll document all of this
23:05
alkisg: for the config of the lts.conf
23:05
what do you suggest ?
23:05
<alkisg>
What do you mean?
23:06
<Maijin>
alkisg: If I want to add user I can use lts.conf or adduser
23:06
<alkisg>
You can use the graphical tool for adding users on the server
23:06
<Maijin>
I don't really get the difference
23:07
alkisg: the default ubuntu stuff?
23:07
<alkisg>
Yup
23:07
<Maijin>
ok
23:07
perfect
23:07
I'll show that to the people there
23:07
should be easy
23:07
<alkisg>
Maijin: run this:
23:07
sudo ltsp-config lts.conf --overwrite
23:07
This will give you a "better" default lts.conf
23:08
It'll overwrite your own, you can then adjust it
23:08
The most important directive there is 'LDM_DIRECTX=True', gives you speed with some security cost
23:09
Time for bed, goodnight all...
23:09
<Maijin>
alkisg: ok I see
