<[GuS]>
Hi guys, i have a problem with LTSP (currently using 5.4.4). When login on local LTSP server with LDM, it works fine. Now, when login to another server using LDM (by using SERVER = otherServerIp) it still logins in the local server. So, just in case changed to xdmcp to login to another server, and black screen appears intead of login. the xdcmp in the other server is enabled and works.
14:25
any idea?

[GuS]: try LDM_SERVER instead of SERVER

Apart from using LDM, i dont know why does not work using xdmcp
16:32
<alkisg>
That's another story, let's focus on LDM
16:32
<[GuS]>
ok
16:33
<alkisg>
So, set LDM_SERVER=the-other-server-ip, try to login, it'll login to your local server as you say,
16:33
<[GuS]>
alkisg: something that i need installed in that other server to let ldm login?
16:33
yep
16:33
<alkisg>
and then run `getltscfg -a` locally to check your lts.conf, and upload the result of `ps aux` locally into pastebin as well
16:33
<[GuS]>
Ok, let me check

16:43
<alkisg>

16:44
(yes you need to copy the keys later on)
16:44
<[GuS]>
alkisg: nice, now it works
16:45
but, which keys i need to copy? the one from the chroot?
16:46
<alkisg>
You need to add the other server's keys to the chroot
16:47
<[GuS]>
alkisg: inside /etc/ssh of chroot?
16:48
<alkisg>
Better in the main server's /etc/ltsp/ssh_known_hosts.server2, so that ltsp-update-sshkeys can then pick them up
16:50
<[GuS]>
from server2, the key is ssh_host_dsa_key.pub right?

I'm desparetly short on sleep and in need of basic help with LTSP5. Had an LTSP4 server that I installed years ago and it 'just worked' -- until it crashed. Decided to upgrade everything to fresh and import the data but have been struggling to get it back up. Finally got *some* clients to boot but other are failing with a kernel panic. Also fighting permissions and the proper way to make existing home directories available to the c
19:28
<alkisg>
Distro/version? Also your sentence was too big and it was truncated by irc
19:28
<milledel>
Base system is Debian, xfce for the Desktop with lightdm.
19:28
Debian 7 that is.
19:29
Sorry about the rambling.
19:30
<alkisg>
The chroot is wheezy too, right? What kernel panic, and in which stage?
19:31
<milledel>
Yes, chroot is wheezy as well. Main server is AMD64 but clients are i386.
19:32
<alkisg>
!quiet

quiet: to enable the Debian kernel and initramfs to show up more messages, in order to better troubleshoot the boot process, remove "quiet" from /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
19:32
<alkisg>
Do that, and then write the last things you see before the kernel panic, and a few lines of the kernel panic (or screenshot)
19:33khildin has joined IRC (khildin!~khildin@ip-80-236-212-100.dsl.scarlet.be)

It stops at .../init-lstp.d/50-rm-system-service with 'arithmatic expression: expecting primary'
19:34
followed imediately by the kernel panic.
19:35
<alkisg>
How much RAM on those clients?
19:36
<milledel>
512 I believe... I'll verify.
19:36
<alkisg>
Put this where "quiet" was: ltsp.break=50-rm-system-services
19:36
Do you get a shell before the client crashes after rebooting it now?
19:38khildin has left IRC (khildin!~khildin@ip-80-236-212-100.dsl.scarlet.be, Client Quit)
19:38
<milledel>
Not sure I understand the "quiet" statement.
19:39
<alkisg>
!quiet

<ltsp`>
quiet: to enable the Debian kernel and initramfs to show up more messages, in order to better troubleshoot the boot process, remove "quiet" from /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
19:39
<alkisg>
I meant that particular file
19:40
It's where the kernel parameters for the client go
19:40
So, in the place where the "quiet" word was, put ltsp.break=50-rm-system-services in its place
19:41
Ouch
19:41
Not lts.conf, pxelinux.cfg/default, the bot hint was wrong, let me fix it...
19:41
!forget quiet
19:41
<ltsp`>
The operation succeeded.
19:42
<alkisg>
!learn quiet as to enable the Debian kernel and initramfs to show up more messages, in order to better troubleshoot the boot process, remove "quiet" from /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default

OK, done. rebooting now...

19:51
Check which script line produces the problem
19:51
<milledel>
This is run on the client?
19:51
<alkisg>
yup
19:53
<milledel>
Apparently sed can't read /proc/meminfo: No such file or directory.
19:54
<alkisg>
That sounds bad...
19:54
ls /proc ==> does it have other files there?
19:54
<milledel>
Yes, one would think.
19:55
Nope! Not a one. Totally empty.
19:55
<alkisg>
mount -t proc proc /proc
19:55
<milledel>
Again, this is on the client?
19:55
<alkisg>
After that?
19:55
Yup
19:56
<milledel>
Proc mounted and is populated.
19:57
<alkisg>
OK, now type "exit" and see if the client boots
19:57
<milledel>
boot continues as expected.
19:58
I now have a logon screen.
19:59
<alkisg>
I don't know why your /proc isn't mounted automatically; maybe you can troubleshoot it by rebooting the client again and run `dmesg` and `cat /var/log/syslog` at the break point,
20:00
but if you need to work around it, you could create a <chroot>/usr/share/ltsp/init-ltsp.d/00-mount-proc file
20:00
...which would do: test -f /proc/meminfo || mount -t proc proc /proc
20:01
proc isn't mounted by ltsp normally; it's a debian initramfs issue the fact that it isn't mounted
20:03
<milledel>
Ok, I'll have a look at the message/log file at the break. Would rather understand & fix the underlying issue than do a work around but I'll take waht I can get.

dmesg again points out that the aufs module is of unknown quality but give no other insight. Syslog does not exist.
20:07
which is strange... it used to be there...
20:08
<alkisg>
Ah it's too early for syslog, ignore that one
20:08
Do another try: break=bottom
20:08
(not ltsp.break this time)
20:08
and at that breakpoint, ls /proc
20:09
<milledel>
I'm with you... I never syslog before 9:00PM.
20:09
Will do, hang on.
20:12
break=bottom -> ls /proc shows proc to be populated.
20:14
<alkisg>
So it's not migrated in the real root later on...
20:16
milledel: at that point, is there a /root/run dir on the client?
20:18
/proc is supposedly moved to the real file system by <chroot>/usr/share/initramfs-tools/init:
20:18
mount -n -o move /proc ${rootmnt}/proc
20:18
<milledel>
Yes, /root/run exists.
20:20
<alkisg>
It sounds like a bigger initramfs problem then, you could try installing wheezy locally on one of those clients to verify it's affected even without ltsp, and then file a bug report in initramfs-tools etc etc

My guess it that is an install/config problem on the server side -- these client were booting mere hours ago with the same client build. What changed was that I was working to get Home dirs mounted/migrated.
20:23
<alkisg>
Is <chroot>/run on the server a directory or a symlink?
20:23
<milledel>
Directory.
20:24
<alkisg>
On the client, while still on the "break=bottom" break point, try this:
20:24
mount -n -o move /run /root/run
20:24
And then: ls /root/run
20:25
Sorry
20:25
Wrong line there...
20:25
mount -n -o move /proc /root/proc
20:25
and then: ls /root/proc
20:25
Those work ok?
20:28
<milledel>
root/run mounted and is populated
20:29
<alkisg>
No, ignore the run lines, do the proc lines instead :)
20:29
...after the "sorry" part :)
20:30
<milledel>
root/proc claims to mount but ls give no such file or directory
20:31
Oh wait... typo on the ls line... please hold
20:32
Yes, /*root*/proc *is* there... /*run*/proc is not. :(
20:34
<alkisg>
So everything seems fine, yet it's not working :D
20:35
What's your cmdline like? cat /proc/cmdline (or now, cat /root/proc/cmdline)
20:35
<milledel>
Correct. <insert emoticon of a geek crying here>
20:36
<alkisg>
Meh, do the init-ltsp.d/00-mount-proc workaround and call it a day!
20:37
<milledel>
cmdline looks like the standard boot line. I'll try the init-ltsp.d/00-mount-proc thing and see what happens.
20:38
Can't call it a day yet though.
20:39
Any ideas (or good docs) on sharing out the home directories? Aw heck, and complete/detailed docs on setting an LTSP up? What I've found is lacking.
20:39
<alkisg>
What do you mean by sharing home directories?
20:41
<milledel>
under LTSP 4 the thin client homes were on the host server. I need this to happen under LTSP5 as well.
20:42
Can't seem to wrap my head around it...
20:43
Admittedly, as I stated in the beginning, I'm seriously lacking in sleep and maybe I'm just not seeing things straight.
20:43
<||cw>
milledel: mine aren't. you can certainly do that with nfs or something though
20:45
<milledel>
Tried with nfs and seem to be having permission problems. My user/group files don't line up between server/client. Not sure if I've done something wrong (quite possibly) or missed something obvious.
20:45
<alkisg>
milledel: /home/username is mounted automatically by LDM upon user login, on LTSP5
20:45
WIth sshfs
20:45
I wasn't around in ltsp4, don't know what that did..
20:46
<milledel>
Good to know! Mine aren't. Grrrr.
20:46
<||cw>
v4 didn't.
20:46
if you have a server that does, someone hacked it on
20:46
<alkisg>
You're seeing LDM, and not LightDM, on the client login screen, right?
20:47
And the user you're trying to login with, is a server-side user, not a chroot user, correct?
20:47
<milledel>
||cw: no, not by that mechanism but somehow it worked.
20:48
<||cw>
if it's still active, it's easy to check how they did it
20:48
I do seem to recall an sshfs hack for v4
20:48
as well as a passwd hack
20:48
<milledel>
alkisg: Maybe... maybe not. I'll certainly be checking here in a moment. Maybe that's where my issues lie... it's entirely possible that I removed LDM
20:49
||cw: Nope, it's dead and gone.

20:50* alkisg waves goodnight
20:51
<milledel>
alkisg: THANK YOU!!!
