<Guest76518>
so I have a silly question. I am trying to install LTSP on to a dell 2950. I would rather do it usb but in the ubuntu alt package to install it automaticly it does not give me the option to press f4 to choose to install it. When I try and install from a DVD iso it fails every time
18:20
<alkisg>
Guest76518: i think recent ubuntu versions no longer support the f4 - install an ltsp server mode
18:21
<Guest76518>
I am using the 12.04.5 verison that should support it. But when I try and write an ISO to the flash drive to do it from there it seems to be the verision 14
18:21
<alkisg>
Guest76518: I think 12.04 doesn't support it
18:22
Why don't you use the desktop package which is the recommented one nowadays?
18:22
<Guest76518>
well then. I got the version from the LTSP wiki with the ubuntu link. I guess I will have to try something else
18:22
ok I didnt read up on the desktop package
18:23
<alkisg>
What are your client specs? ram, cpu?
18:23
And how many clients?
18:24
<Guest76518>
At our shop I have a total of 5 actual thin clients that are atom dual core, with gb of ram. I also have full size computers that are going to be acting as clients and most are dual or quad processors with 2-4 gb of ram
18:25
<alkisg>
!ltsp-pnp
18:25
<ltsp>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
18:25
<alkisg>
That's what I'd suggest
18:25
<Guest76518>
As the full computers die they will be replaced with thin clients.
18:25
Awsome alkisg. I will give that a shot and thank you for the help
18:25
<alkisg>
You can use either 12.04 with ppa (mentioned in the wiki page) or 14.04
18:26
If you buy more thin clients do buy something with a better cpu, not atom based :)
18:26
(so that they work as netbooted diskless fat clients)
18:28
<Guest76518>
ok. I appriciate it. The thin clients I have were something I got on a deal with a couple older servers. They are diskless workstations.
19:04
one more silly question. Is this suposed to be on regular ubuntu desktop software or on a ubuntu server software?
19:05
BTW I am pretty new to linux. I understand somethings but not all, so I may ask stupid questions from time to time.
19:05
<alkisg>
Guest76518: first, type this in irc: /nick somename
19:05
So that you're not a guest anymore and we can recognize you the next times you come here
19:06
<Guest76518>
irc: /Dkauf
19:06
<alkisg>
Use the ubuntu desktop cd
19:06
without the irc in front, start with the slash
19:06
/nick
19:06
<Guest76518>
irc: /nick dkauf
19:06
<alkisg>
Type this:
