<alkisg>
vagrantc: do you think we should put the package descriptions for ltsp components somewhere in the source, so that they're translated in launchpad?
06:32
Along with the rest of ltsp, and then debian, gentoo, fedora etc can use them as they like?
06:32
I'll do that for epoptes...
06:33
If so, it might be a good chance to review them, so as they're up to date (e.g. some only mention "thin" clients) and somewhat distro-agnostic..
06:38
<vagrantc>

Good Morning everybody. I have a question. Edubuntu+LTSP. The thin client use the gnome-session. Sometime, the Application menu or the gear menu (right side of the top menubar) display a little gray empty square instead of the menu entries. Never seen this before?
07:09
Could it be related to the Profile Manager? Because before implementing that I didn't see the problem.

dievel: did those user change their icon theme perhaps? some icon themes are incomplete and don't have that icon
07:25
dievel: or did the same user perhaps log in twice on different machines? logging in twice breaks some things, usually gnome-settings-daemon as well which would make you lose icon settings and theming
07:27
<dievel>
highvoltage: as far as I can see the theme is always the default and they don't log twice. It happen randomly even in my test machine/client.
07:30
More than this I can say that if I leave the mouse pointer on the menu for some time, the menu finally appear. But being so random I need to test better.

I confirm the/my problem. The top right gear menu (and sometime also the Application menu), does not open immediately. It show a gray empty square. If you leave the mouse resting on the menu for more or less 10 seconds, the menu appear. This happen only the first time you try to open the menu. Once opened it works fine. Anybody noticed before? I have this behavior on test and production server. I bet I should tune lts.conf but no clue in wh

I can log in with nxclient, but this isn't enough to reproduce the bug I'm chasing. (it's some sort of an environment bug that occurs on LTSP sessions and not on nxclient session, and it's hitting IBUS input method.

<alkisg>
Or vbox on the server, or whatever other method for virtual machines
21:19
Or if you have a client open, you can just vnc to it
21:19
<vaab>
okay, that's a neat idea. Didn't though of that.
21:20
alkisg: my problem is that I have to open and close the session (so I loose the VNC connection), and furthermore, all LTSP workstations are shutdown at the moment.
21:21
but the KVM or virtualbox might be the way for me... I've virtualbox running on the same server.

For example, with epoptes you could have the client VNC to you, but if they're closed you obviously can't :)
21:22
gbaman, if you see the logs: no, don't use Ubuntu PPAs on Debian unless they specifically mention that they've taken care of version mismatches etc. The Greek schools PPA is for Ubuntu 12.04 only.
21:24
<vagrantc_>
the debian versions are reasonably current
21:24
in wheezy, that is
21:25
i'll make backports of newer versions once wheezy releses... (real soon now...)

22:32
debian wheezy

just noticed my question was answered in the logs :)

i am on squeeze
22:34
sigh

upgrading though only involes changing sources list and updating everything from there, dousnt it?

there's not much point is squeeze right now

not much on it, just a fix for a framebuffer issue on the old mac mini

you're using a mac mini server?

not that old :)

it is the same machine that the edubuntu install is on
22:48

you could either reinstall with wheezy, or upgrade to wheezy, either should work fine
22:49

will the kernel be upgraded?
22:49
for an upgrade
22:49
<vagrantc>
yes
22:50

ok, i patched it with the nvidia driver, might as well just reinstall it, reinstall always works better

dont have anything other that on it

This might be a silly question: does the /etc/X11/Xsession.d/* scripts from the LTSP SERVER get executed when a workstation is launched ?
23:17
<vagrantc_>
when you log into the server from a thin client
23:18Phantomas has left IRC (Phantomas!~Phantomas@ubuntu/member/phantomas, Ping timeout: 248 seconds)
23:20
<vaab>
I've got issues with IBUS that relies on some environment variables to be set. These are set thanks to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/* that seems to be triggered through /etc/X11/Xsession mecanism on the LTSP SERVER... I was wondering if I had to install something on the /opt/ltsp/i386 image (especially in the /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/X11... directory).
23:21
<vagrantc>
are you using thin clients or fat clients?
23:22
<vaab>
obviously my quick test seems to confirm that Xsession files from the server are not executed on the LTSP workstation (which might be normal, but in this case, this invalidates the IBUS installation procedure for LTSP)
23:22
I'm on thin clients
23:23
<vagrantc>
yes, Xsession definitely runs on the server for thin clients

<vaab>
well, I added a simple 'echo "Ran" >> /tmp/ksento.ping.log' at the beginning of the '/etc/X11/Xsession.d/80im-switch' file, and I can re log in as many times as I wish, no /tmp/ksento.ping.log gets created.
23:27
<vagrantc>
so the server's xinput.d files are causing you problems on when logging in from a thin client?
23:27
<vaab>
if I log in with nxclient, the file gets created.
23:28
So my method seems a good way to prove that /etc/X11/Xsession.d/80im-script script from the LTSP server is not beiing executed when login in from an LTSP workstation.
23:30
I must add that I've tried to add a similar line in "80_ltsp-sound" script also, and that it isnt ran either.
23:30
<vagrantc>
from an LTSP thin client?
23:31
<vaab>
Yep: LTSP server's files /etc/X11/Xsession.d/* are not executed when login in from an LTSP thin client.
23:31
but they are (as you would naturally expect) when login in thank to nxclient for example.
23:31
<vagrantc>
have you specified LDM_XSESSION in lts.conf?
23:31
normally, it's a bad idea to mess with thta.
23:32
<vaab>
I have:
23:32
LDM_XSESSION="gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d"
23:32
<vagrantc>
there's a lot of bad instructions on the internet that suggest to use LDM_XSESSION, but they abuse it.
23:32
really, people should be using LDM_SESSION to select the session.
23:32
vaab: that's your problem. you've told it not to use /etc/X11/Xsession
23:33
<vaab>
ok, but I tried:
23:33
LDM_SESSION="ubuntu-2d"
23:33
and this didn't worked at all
23:34
that was my first try... I had to resolve to use LDM_XSESSION because LDM_SESSION didn't work for me.
23:34
<vagrantc>
well, that's going to cause you problems, figure out how to get it to work with LDM_SESSION if you really need that.
23:35
you may need a newer version of ldm and/or ltsp in order to work properly
23:36
<vaab>
I can't remember exactly what didn't work (probably it just didn't select the correct session).
23:36
<vagrantc>
LDM_XSESSION is only supposed to be used for something to replace the entire functionality of /etc/X11/Xsession.
23:36
there were bugs in LDM_SESSION that later got fixed
23:37
<vaab>
okay, are there ppa or something similar to get some official good version of LTSP for 12.04 ?
23:37
<vagrantc>
vaab: that said, you might be able to write a wrapper around Xsession which hard-codes "gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d"
23:37
!ppa
23:37
<ltsp>
I do not know about 'ppa', but I do know about these similar topics: 'sbalneav-ppa', 'greek-schools-ppa'
23:37
<vagrantc>
!greek-schools-ppa
23:37
<ltsp>
greek-schools-ppa: https://launchpad.net/~ts.sch.gr/+archive/ppa/ supports LTS Ubuntu releases with newer LTSP versions, bug fixes etc
23:37
<vagrantc>
alkisg supports that
23:40
<vaab>
ok thanks, perfect. I'll use them surely. But at this moment, I'm not in a position to tinker things that much as I'm not located next to the real workstations right now. And I guess I'll need to check that they all boot correctly and support any session changes (especially issues with graphic drivers and session not beiing correctly forced to 2d modes)...
23:41
Do you see a quick and temporary way to set some variables in the X session of the ltsp-thin client ? I was thinking about /etc/X11/Xsession of the thin client... is that valid ?
23:41
I mean in the ltsp-image of course
23:42
<vagrantc>
the thing i was thinking about was dropping a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ that overrides the default setting.
23:43
<vaab>
on the ltsp-image ?
23:44
<vagrantc>
no on the server.
23:44
you could force the session type server-side by messing with the server's /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ and adding a little hook.
23:45
you'd need to mangle the STARTUP var a bit.
23:45
anyways, gotta run... good luck.
