<danboid>
I'm setting up my first test LTSP server under 16.04 but the docs seem to be a bit lacking
10:26
Maybe I'm not looking in the right place?
10:27
As far as ubuntu is concerned, there is this very minimalistic page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall
10:27
<alkisg>
This is a very old page that noone decided to update
10:27
Here's a new one:
10:27
!ltsp-pnp
10:27
<ltsp>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is the recommented method to install and maintain LTSP for "usual" setups. Since it doesn't involve chroots, it requires little to no command line to maintain it. It automatically supports both thin and fat ltsp clients. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
10:29
<danboid>
alkisg, OK, thanks I'll have a look at that one

<danboid>
alkisg, I presumed I was going to be best off installing LTSP on top of Ubuntu server 16.04 but after reading through that guide it sounds like I may be better off using regular Ubuntu 16.04 (or Ubuntu MATE 16.04) instead unless I want to exclude loads of services from the lts image?
11:18
<alkisg>
danboid: the main question is, do you want to maintain a "server and a chroot", or a "desktop-like pc"?
11:18
The second way doesn't use a chroot, but the server / as a template
11:20
<danboid>
I want to keep things as simple as possible for my first test so I think the second option is prob going to be best
11:20
<alkisg>
danboid: indeed; so follow "blindly" the ltsp-pnp page

alkisg, Getting somewhere now. I've just run ltsp-update-image but why does it report 36K duplicate files?
17:05
alkisg, It seemed to create the image fine anyway
17:08
vagrantc, ^^
17:09
Just asking out of interest, I presume it won't be an issue
17:10
<vagrantc>
i'e either run ltsp-update-image too many times that i don't recall that message, or i've not seen it :)
17:10kjackal has left IRC (kjackal!~quassel@2a02:587:3102:4300:594:810f:7e82:d8ce, Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
17:19
<danboid>
vagrantc, Haha! I'm sure its nothing to worry about, just sounds a bit odd
17:19
<vagrantc>
if it's using squashfs, it would make sense that squashfs would do file de-duplication, but 36k files sounds like a lot
17:20
<danboid>
Yes its squashfs'd
17:20
<vagrantc>
unless maybe you're building an image from / and you also have a chroot in /opt/ltsp/* ... but i *thought* ltsp-update-image excluded /opt/ltsp/
17:21

I've just been following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp by rote

<danboid>
vagrantc, back
18:17
vagrantc, Yep, fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 desktop amd64
18:17
standard unity version
18:23
I've hit a snag following that guide. '/etc/dnsmasq.d/ltsp-server-dnsmasq.conf' doesn't exist and so the sed command modifying that file fails
18:24
I only have one conf file in that dir and its called network-manager
18:25
<vagrantc>
did you run "ltsp-config dnsmasq" ?
18:25
danboid: that's in the Installation steps
18:25
<danboid>
vagrantc, Nope, thats missing from the
18:26
sorry
18:26
<checks command history>
18:26
<vagrantc>
danboid: also curious why you're doing it by hand instead of using ltsp-manager
18:27
!ltsp-manager
18:27
<ltsp>
ltsp-manager: LTSP Manager is a GUI tool that makes LTSP maintenance easy. It's the recommended way to install LTSP in common setups. More info: http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Ltsp-manager
18:27
<danboid>
You're right, I missed that command
18:27
<vagrantc>
i mean, i still do it by hand out of habit, and am not much of a GUI person ...
18:28
<danboid>
I'm doing it this way as alkisg recommended I follow this guide. ltsp-manager would've done it all for me you say?
18:29
<vagrantc>
if alkisg recommended it, maybe there was a reason ...
18:29
danboid: it would do some of the steps for you

I see why I didn't run `ltsp-config dnsmasq` as I tagged that onto the end of the previous apt-get install line. I saw the dnsmasq and presumed it was continuing from the previous line :)
18:30
<vagrantc>
and leave less room for typos
18:31
<danboid>
I thought ltsp-config was a package too :)
18:32
I'll be checking out ltsp-manager imminently anyhoo
18:33
<vagrantc>
i see, that wiki page renders it in a way where that would be an easy mistake to make
18:33
<danboid>
yep
18:34
<vagrantc>
more whitespace would be helpful there
18:34* vagrantc suspects those sections were made for cut-and-pastability
18:38
<danboid>

Its booting the kernel at least
18:53
dev/nbd0 does not exist it sez
18:54
I should prob just reboot my LTSP server and try again
18:56
How do I check nbd is configured correctly?
18:57
vagrantc ^^
18:57
alkisg, ^^
19:00
Just had a look at my lts.conf but couldn't see anything nbd related in there
19:02
Aha! It might be issue 3 in the relevant bug reports?
19:03
It says I should try running sudo dpkg-divert --rename --divert /etc/nbd-client.init /etc/init.d/nbd-client
19:03
If that is my prob?
19:05
OK I'm going to reboot my LTSP server then try again. If that doesn't fix it I'll run that command

19:10

19:10
sudo service start wha?
19:13
<vagrantc>
danboid: IPAPPEND=3 in your update-kernels.conf ?
19:13
<danboid>
Yep
19:14
<vagrantc>
and in /var/lib/tftpboot/..../pxelinux.cfg/default ?
19:16
<danboid>
I've got `ipappend 3` in there, no equals inbetween
19:20
All the kernel entries in there have `ipappend 3` on the line following the append line
19:21
I wa expecting that installing the LTSP packages would've made its required services auto start on boot but that seems not to be the case
19:22
I could at least PXE boot into a kernel before I restarted my LTSP serverr
19:22
(after finishing stepping through that guide)
19:26
<alkisg>
Hi all. vagrantc, regarding copyright notices at the top of the files, do you think this format is OK? (copied from sphinx): https://github.com/eellak/gsoc2018-epoptes/commit/bb587fe7e9ffc811c33c9f58a618bdecd0bc15e6#diff-2f08d2037f2e4ff0dbb1a525b54f8421
19:26
I.e., instead of having all the gplv3 license there, to only have "+ :copyright: Copyright 2010-2018 by the Epoptes team, see AUTHORS. + :license: GPLv3, see LICENSE for details."
19:27
<danboid>
alkisg, That guide you linked to didn't quite work. I could PXE boot into a Linu kernel but then it failed to find /dev/nbd0
19:28
alkisg, Now I've rebooted my LTSP server I have nothing so its clearly not starting te required sevices at boot
19:31
alkisg, I did every step using regular desktop Ubuntu 16.04 amd64 with no extra packages or tweaks
19:31
<vagrantc>
alkisg: it's probably fine.
19:33
alkisg: alternately, going with something like the SPDX headers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPDX
19:36
alkisg: i haven't actually used SPDX in practice, but linux & u-boot have largely switched to that in recent years
19:36
<alkisg>
vagrantc: thanks; i read about it a couple of years ago, i'll focus on that
19:37
<danboid>
No suggestions?
19:37
<alkisg>
danboid: i'll be available in about half an hour
19:37
<danboid>
alkisg, OK
19:38
<vagrantc>
alkisg: although, i'm having trouble finding useful information on SPDX ... so... ugh.
19:40
alkisg: or at least, a simple "how to apply SPDX headers without reading an overly long specification manual"

alkisg, I've made those changes and rebooted but PXE booting is broken. It scans for TFTP and fails
20:08
alkisg, It was getting further than that previously, until I rebooted my LTSP sever
20:10
<vagrantc>
is dnsmasq running?
20:12
<danboid>
Yes but
20:12
no servers found in /var/run/dnsmasq/resolv.conf
20:12
Why was it working previously?
20:14
Oh I see
20:14
Conflict
20:14
I have dnsmasq running on my bpi too so that file is pointing at my bpi
20:15
<vagrantc>
and your bpi is configured to do dhcp and/or proxydhcp too?
20:15
(bananapi?)
20:15
<danboid>
yep
20:16
Its running pihole
20:17
My router wouldn't let me set DNS so I had to use DHCP on my bpi instead
20:19
So, rather than disabling DHCP/dnsmasq on my bpi, I need to reconfigure dnsmasq where?
20:20
<vagrantc>
if the bpi is just doing dhcp and not proxydhcp, it should "just work".
20:21
but if it's also advertising alternate boot information, you'll have issues
20:21
<danboid>
So if I disable dnsmasq on my LTSP server, it should jut work you say?
20:21
<vagrantc>
no
20:22
dnsmasq on the LTSP server should be configured to proxy dhcp requests and add the information necessary to boot ltsp
20:22
that's the default ltsp-pnp configuration ...
20:23
<danboid>
I'll just unplug my bpi whilst testing LTSP, that should do iy
