did you create an lts.conf file ? did you set anything there ?

ogra: yeah, I did set something about SCREEN on the lts.conf inside the tftp folder
10:12
should I place localdev = true ?

what exactly ? can you paste the fiel to the pastebin ?

ogra: "pastebot" is The LTSP pastebot is at http://pastebot.ltsp.org. Please paste all text longer than a line or two to the pastebot, as it helps to reduce traffic in the channel. A link to the content will be pasted in the channel.

10:15
<cdealer__>
ogra: its there... only a feel lines
10:17

hmm, with that the sound should properly work
10:17
can you try dropping everything but the resolution line ?
10:17
<cdealer__>
ogra: but the sound of the client is playing here in the server... I was searching for somethign when from nowhere some jinglebell start playing here LOL
10:18

10:58

ok

edit /usr/sbin/ltspfsmounter (with sudo) and remove that line from the script

12:34
<ogra1>
heh
12:35
yeah, that happens over time :)
12:35
<laga>
ogra1: have you guys ever considered using aufs instead of unionfs?
12:36
<ogra1>
not really
12:36
unionfs is in the ubuntu kernel and used for liveCDs while aufs is still very young and not used anywhere ...
12:37
i actually like to rely on the power of our kernel maintainers who rather focus on unionfs than on integrating aufs better .... if that ever happens i might think about it for ubuntu
12:37
<laga>
it's used by knoppix and also available in the debian installer
12:37
<ogra1>
but that indeed doesnt mean that i wouldnt accept patches to make it work ;)
12:38
<laga>
ogra1: that's the point :) i've found that aufs works much better than unionfs with nfs branches. i'll try to get it added to the hardy kernel
12:38
<ogra1>
laga, you wont
12:38
<laga>
reasons?
12:39
<ogra1>
the hardy kernel is pretty much at a point where it wont add new features
12:39
<laga>
ogra1: maybe they'll make an exception for l-u-m
12:39
<ogra1>
hardy is an LTS release ... it will be supported for 3 years on the desktop and for 5 on the server
12:39
that means we need to be *extremely* conservative
12:39
<laga>
that'd explain why unionfs is still version 1.4
12:40
<ogra1>
no
12:40
unionfs is still 1.4 because 2.x is simply broken
12:40
<laga>
with apparmor at least :)
12:40
<ogra1>
no, apparmor cant handle stacked filesystems at all
12:40
that not unionfs specific
12:40
*that's
12:41
aufs will likely expose the same problems
12:41
(with apparmor at least)
12:41
<laga>
how is this worked around?
12:41
<ogra1>
on the liveCD apparmor doesnt start
12:41
<laga>
oh. nifty.
12:41
<ogra1>
in ltsp we dont install apparmor
12:42
i'm not aware odf any other unionfs based setups ubuntu has atm
12:42
<laga>
i'll have to re-visit unionfs then.
12:42
when i tried it two weeks ago, the fat client would stall after log-in
12:42
if it got that far.
12:43
<ogra1>
well, does it have enough ram ?
12:43
dotn forget you need a lot for a fat client
12:43
<laga>
yep, i think so.
12:43
<ogra1>
and surely you will run into other probs as well
12:43
<laga>
500M ought to be enough :)
12:43
<ogra1>
not really
12:43
you run the whole desktop locally
12:44
<laga>
ogra1: i was not using tmpfs. my cow branch was a nfs share
12:44
<ogra1>
that eats likely 3-400 for normal operation
12:44
ah
12:44BadMagic has joined #ltsp
12:44
<laga>
i also remember seeing unionfs related OOPSes.
12:45
<ogra1>
unionfs and nfs dont go together
12:45
dont waste your time others have proven that several times :)
12:45
<laga>
given the bad experience we had with unionfs during the gutsy cycle i just didn't bother reporting it :)
12:45
<ogra1>
??
12:45
<laga>
ogra1: others have proven several times that it does work. with older versions of unionfs at least.
12:45
<ogra1>
what bad experience did you have ?
12:46* ogra1 didnt have any
12:46
<laga>
ogra1: unionfs broke the live disks. it was resolved before gutsy was released but it was bad enough :)
12:47
i believe it was related to apparmor somehow. i don't remember the exact details because i never thought i'd need it again.
12:47
<ogra1>
nah
12:47
not related to apparmor
12:47
<laga>
good.
12:47
<ogra1>
thats what you mean ... now i remember
12:48
i didnt pay much attention to the breakage since i knew before we would switch back
12:48
it was only a test
12:48
<laga>
unionfs 2.x, right?
12:48
<ogra1>
right
12:49
<laga>
:)
12:49
<ogra1>
but with the pre-announce "we know it will likely break"
12:49
<laga>
must have missed that back then :)
12:51
ok. i can't use unionfs because it breaks with NFS and i can't aufs unless mythbuntu comes with a special diskless-kernel. makes me wonder if i want to postpone this project to hardy+1
12:52
<vagrantc>
why do you need a special diskless kernel?
12:53
<laga>
vagrantc: by "diskless-kernel", i was referring to a kernel patched to support aufs
12:53
<vagrantc>
laga: ah.
12:54
<laga>
wonder if could cannibalize nbdswapd to provide copy-on-write space to clients
12:55
<vagrantc>
surely
12:56
<laga>
turning that into persistent storage might be a wee bit harder.

16:15
<kaos01>
hi, im having troube geting ltsp 4.2 to recognise my Intel 82566 Ethernet card
16:15
anyone any ideas ?
16:17
<Gadi>
kaos01: you might have to download the driver from intel, compile against the ltsp 4.2 kernel, and pull it into the initrd
16:18
<kaos01>
a linux specific driver ?
16:18
<Gadi>
intel does have them
16:18
what problem are you having
16:18
<kaos01>
ok, thank you
16:18
i give it a go :)
16:18
oh its not recognising the network card
16:18
<Gadi>
does it not recognize the card at all?
16:18Q-FUNK has joined #ltsp
16:18
<kaos01>
no
16:19
<Gadi>
you may need only to modify the "niclist" in the initrd
16:19
or pass as a kernel argument: NIC=<driver>
16:19
do you know what driver it takes?
16:20
<kaos01>
no not yet
16:21
<Gadi>
ah, ok - LTSP4.2's initrd has a list of known drivers for particular PCI IDs
16:21
of course, its a bit dated
16:21
:)
16:21
could be you have the driver and just need to tell the initrd to load it
16:21
bec its not in the list
16:21
thats where: NIC=<driver> comes in
16:22
<kaos01>
yes i used NIC=tg3 previously
16:22
is bec the driver ?
16:22
<Gadi>
if, however, it is a card for which there is no driver in the initrd, you have to get it in there
16:22
<kaos01>
ok
16:22
<Gadi>
tg3 is a broadcom driver
16:22
no?
16:22
<kaos01>
yes
16:23
<Gadi>
ah, so have you tried NIC=tg3?
16:23
(I thought you said this was Intel)
16:23
<kaos01>
oh i meant i used that previously, this time my ethernet card has changed to intel 82566
16:23
<Gadi>
ah
16:23
<kaos01>
yes, this time its Intell :) sorry
16:23
<Gadi>
ok, so similar story
16:24
unless the driver is not there or needs updating
16:25
vagrantc: are you hacking ldm or merely repackaging it?
16:27
<vagrantc>
Gadi: just relatively minor changes
16:27
<Gadi>
anything yummy?
16:28
<vagrantc>
Gadi: fedora wants some things in different places than we've been putting them in debian and ubuntu
16:28
<Gadi>
ah, not yummy at all
16:28
<vagrantc>
nothing to impressive, no
16:28
<Gadi>
:)
16:28
<vagrantc>
Gadi: i did my first ltspfs upload directly to debian yesterday :)
16:28
<kaos01>
Gadi, where do i find the driver "list" ?
16:28
<Gadi>
kaos01: its in the initrd
16:28nicoAMG has quit IRC
16:28
<Gadi>
called 'niclist'
16:29
vagrantc: nice
16:30

Gadi, i can only see initramfs
16:30
<Gadi>
sorry - I meant initramfs

ok, so I'm taking the jump (yikes!) I want to go from ltsp42 to ltsp5.. can't seem to find basic documentation such as "just copy over your lts.conf file" ... ;)
22:42
<loather-work>
it's a big jump
22:46
<kyron>
really?
22:46
that much... :/ I decided I would do this on a whim, just now...at ¼ to 0h00 ;)
22:49
loather-work, surprised there isn't a 4.2 to 5 howto or notes hanging around ;)
22:50
<loather-work>
yeah... there really isn't any straightforward way to do it. it's almost like starting over from scratch.
22:50
a lot of the lts.conf directives are the same, though
22:50
but now it's not included in the chroot (which isn't even a chroot anymore).
22:51
<kyron>
hmm... but...I don't want to read those 1050 e-mails from the ltsp-users list ;)
22:51
not a chroot anymore huh...hmmm
22:52
<loather-work>
yeah. it's an image that's served over NBD.
22:52
(no more NFS).

O_o!!!>
22:52
oh crap
22:52
uhm...uhm...
22:53
that might mean I need some server side modifications..
22:53
<loather-work>
Quite a few, yes
22:54
<kyron>
Arglfuddoh!
22:54
<loather-work>
My advice is that if 4.2 is working OK for you, and you don't plan on doing any upgrades to the server, stick with it until you upgrade
22:55
<kyron>
well it seems to have died due to a #@$%@# Gentoo upgrade imposed by a GLSA on LTSP-4.2 (it basically overwrote the fixes I had made stabilizing the install)...gnat!
22:55
(ok...so this is not prod environment... it's my GF about to kill me because she can't access the term at the moment)
22:55
and I was about to migrate the prod environment at the U for 5...so this is a good test ;)
22:56
loather-work, is there a "checklist" somewhere for the server-side mods?
22:56
by any incredible chance^
22:56
<loather-work>
GLSA?
22:57
there isn't really a checklist.. but on the wiki there is a howto for 5. Your best bet, from what I understand, is using ubuntu as the base and creating your image there.
22:57
i hacked together ubuntu for the runtime on the terminals plus fedora 7 in one installation i did
22:58
still using NFS
22:58
<dberkholz>
don't blame gentoo for your lack of backups =P
22:59
<kyron>
well, my server is Gentoo and it has no choice to remain as such...I was hoping the link on the wiki lead to a "functional" LTSP image that I could just dump into /opt and tweak the dnsmasq config files
22:59
dberkholz, Ah crap!
22:59
you found me
23:00
well... the problem I hit is that a recent upgrade rendered the term useless. As soon as my GF logs onto the term, something makes it go crazy and X goes into a cyclic restart
23:01
dberkholz, quite frankly, don't need to backup a "static" system image...usually ;)
23:01
<dberkholz>
unless you change it, in which case it's no longer static as installed...
23:02
<kyron>
I love you :P
23:02
<dberkholz>
anyhow, if you're using ltsp 5 go with ubuntu or debian
23:03
<kyron>
a home computer is meant to make mistakes (ok, not when you're cramming to finish writing up that damned paper)
23:03
<dberkholz>
i'm sort of working on gentoo, slowly
23:03
<kyron>
dberkholz, you mean as base system right?
23:03
dberkholz, yeah, I know about that ;)
23:03
base=for terms
23:03
<dberkholz>
if you're really a gentoo fanatic, you could stick the ubuntu in a chroot
23:04
<kyron>
dberkholz, starge 3&
23:04
?
23:04
<dberkholz>
kyron: well, with ltsp 5 things are a bit more integrated wrt server and clients. it's not just dropping in a huge pile of crap.
23:04
you might want to read a bit on the wiki
23:05
<loather-work>
i still need to fully integrate it into fedora.
23:05
i think someone started workign on it
23:05
<dberkholz>
loather-work: fwiw, GLSA = gentoo linux security announcement
23:05
<kyron>
dberkholz, yeah, so I am learning...hence my asking about a checklist
23:05
<loather-work>
oh, right.
23:06
<kyron>
dberkholz, the irony is that LTSP wasn't in my world file...so I'm a little miffed as to how it got "updated"
23:11
but what about the tarballs at: http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/DownLoads
23:12
aren't those "functionnal" ?
23:12
<loather-work>
the 6.x one is
23:12
the 7.x one i had numerous issues with
23:12
mainly the fact that it, oh, wouldn't boot
23:12
<kyron>
I got the `ubuntu_6.10_i386`
23:13
<loather-work>
that one works out of box as an nfs chroot

hi, i have nowadays a fully working ltsp environment, next thing is adding a printer to it, i was wondering, do i need a print server or does it work in clients if i just plug the printer to the server, i mean, can clients then print via server?
23:59
sry for my english
