<youngun>
I am trying to get some information
09:49
about ltsp 5
09:49
using ubuntu ultimate 7.04
09:49
can someone assist me in changing the default sign in screen
09:51
<sbalneav>
What do you mean? The image used?
09:53
<youngun>
uh idk
09:53
the big ubuntu screen with only default session appears when a client boots
09:53
I would like to put a picture on it and offer the choice of gnome or kde
10:02vanya has quit IRC
10:03iMav has joined #ltsp

<sbalneav>
Well, if you've got kde installed, it will offer kde as a choice for the sessions.

10:09
<sbalneav>
As for the picture, take a look in /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ldm/themes
10:10
create your own theme, and set up the default link accordingly
10:11otavio has quit IRC
10:12
<youngun>
but it doesn't on the clients
10:12
all it says is default
10:12
k
10:14
<sbalneav>
Do the following
10:14
/usr/sbin/update-alternatives --list x-session-manager
10:14
What do you get?
10:15
<youngun>
brb
10:16
usr/bin/startkde
10:16
<sbalneav>
That's it?
10:16
<youngun>
yep
10:17
<sbalneav>
ok, so that's the default
10:17
<youngun>
i looked at the themes folder
10:17
and it says the default is broken
10:17
<sbalneav>
you'd have to install both gnome and kde to have a choice.
10:17
<youngun>
but on the server login locally i can choose
10:17
<sbalneav>
You have gnome installed?
10:19irule has joined #ltsp

10:26
along with a long list of what looks like fonts
10:26

<sbalneav>

10:28

10:33

10:42

10:42
i wil try it
10:44
nope still says default
10:44
hmmmm
10:44
<sbalneav>
Well, it will always say default first
10:44
it's a drop down list
10:45
On the server, what do you get when you run /usr/sbin/ldminfod
10:45
please paste the results to the pastebin

sbalneav: yes
21:25* vagrantc slightly impatiently awaits the question

:)
21:26
<sbalneav>
So, if we try to ssh somewhere, and we get the "are you sure you want to connect message" indicating that we don't kave a known host set up....
21:26
I assume we DON'T want to script a connect, and issue a status message on the terminal, right?
21:27
<vagrantc>
yeah.
21:27
that's a nice way for the admin to control which machines they use
21:27
<sbalneav>
Thy will be done.
21:27
<vagrantc>
or can use
21:27
<sbalneav>
right
21:27
<vagrantc>
but it should probably issue some kind of error message, rather than silently failing
21:27
<sbalneav>
and, also for the multi-login idea you had yesterday.
21:27
<vagrantc>
like the python ldm did
21:27
yeah
21:27
<sbalneav>
right, I'll issue a status message to the greeter.
21:27
<vagrantc>
nice.
21:28
<sbalneav>
eeeeexcellent.

<vagrantc>
i sure wish i could get it working on debian
21:28
<sbalneav>
Carry on, citizen.
21:28

i only tried a couple times, but it failed badly.
21:28

21:28

yeah

never has worked for me on debian

21:34
but maybe that won't happen
21:34
<sbalneav>
Expect a call
21:39
vagrantc: All he got was a message saying they were closed, so he told me to tell you that he's just finishing up dinner, and will be back at the Doubletree Lloyd centre in 15-20 minutes
21:39
So, I think we've pioneered a new communications method here
21:39
<vagrantc>
gah.
21:39
i missed the call.
21:39

well now it's back to normal after chmodding it.. i told him to fllow the directions in that mail you gave me a link to

but, he never chmodded it :(
22:39
i'm gonna give him a talking to
22:39
when he gets back online
22:40
i guess now i have to fix up the hostname situation
22:43
it doesn't believe it's own hostname it seems
22:44
even tho i have it set in dns
22:45
<sbalneav>
What doesn't beleive it's own hostname? The terminal? It doesn't need to.
22:45
<johnny>
i guess i'll see what happens when i finally get that patched ldm
22:47
whenever codebrowse comes back up

has anyone used thin clients from this company with LTSP? http://www.lucidatech.com
22:54
<sbalneav>
johnny: it's up for me.
22:54
<johnny>
it just hangs
22:54
for me
22:54
from inside here, and from my dedi
22:55
which is like 1000 miles away btw
22:55
<sbalneav>
try code.launchpad.net
22:55
which will also work
22:56
<johnny>
yes.. that does work
22:56
but the url doesn't exist
22:56
page not found
22:56
aha.. it lives again.. i got a request for cert this time
22:57
<iMav>
anyone use thin clients from http://www.neoware.com (and/or the before-mentioned http://www.lucidatech.com)?
22:57
<johnny>
oh.. guess not.. back to hanging..
22:58
<sbalneav>
iMav: No, and no
22:58
<johnny>
sbalneav, does this url work for you?

22:58
<sbalneav>
Nope, broken link
22:58
<johnny>
that was in the link you sent me
22:59
guess i'll find it by browsing somehow
22:59
<sbalneav>
but you changed code for codebrowse, yes?
22:59
<iMav>
sbalneav: ok, thanks. I'm going to be moving my kids to thin clients when I get home...so I want them to be able to have a wide range of designs to choose from (hense my inquiries regarding many different vendors)
22:59
<sbalneav>
codebrowse does seem a bit slow.
23:00
iMav: I use either Via Eden EPIA 5000 motherboards, or thin clients from www.disklessworkstations.com
23:00
<johnny>
yay via..
23:01
<iMav>
any good sites for interesting mini-ITX cases?
23:01
<sbalneav>
I use some standard black nondescript thing.
23:01
<johnny>
oh oops.. sbalneav i didn't realize they were bzr branch addresses, it looked like it came from a mailing list :)
23:01
<sbalneav>
I'll see if i can find it
23:03
<johnny>
hmm.. i'm here https://code.launchpad.net/~gideon/ltsp/gadi-ldm-mods-ltsp
23:04
i clicked browse , but i only see a list of revisions, but no link to their contents
23:04
<sbalneav>
cubid 2266 cases are what we use
23:05
<johnny>
perhaps it is only browsable by logged in users?
23:05
that would be silly
23:05
<sbalneav>
no, click on browse code
23:05
<johnny>
i did
23:05
and i just come to the list of revisions again
23:05
<sbalneav>
ah, looks like canonical's proxy is down.
23:06ari_stress has left #ltsp
23:06
<johnny>
well. i'll look it up tomorrow, now that i know they are bzr branches
23:06
now i guess i'll try for a few minuts to get the ppc clients to boot
23:07
<iMav>
Is there a tipping point spec-wise for thin clients in regards to performance? i.e. the LTSP Term 1000 description states taht it is unsuitable for LTSP 5.0 due to boot times being over 3 minutes. So, I assume that sub-3000MHz machines are probably not a good choice.
23:08
uhhh, sub 300MHz, that is. :)
23:08
my daughter would love the SYM1110. But it's meager specs have me a bit hesistant.
23:10
<sbalneav>
I know performance is fine with the Via Edens, which are 550 mhz
23:11
As for the 1000, a lot's been fixed with them for Gutsy. Boot times are now 90 seconds or better
23:12
<iMav>
cool. I won't be home till spring at the earliest...so I have time to wait on Gutsy. :)
23:13
<johnny>
i guess i'll have to look into this laterz
23:13
night dudez
