Just returning from a "vacation" -- my 1225e isn't pick up the DHCPOFFER, when others are. What's the procedure for going after this issue?
06:51
(like, does disklessws have a support line or..?)
06:51
<jammcq>
was it working before ?
06:51
<Blinny>
Yeah.
06:51
I suspect some surge issue, though it's on a really expensive power block
06:51
<jammcq>
send email to 'support@disklessworkstations.com'
06:51
<Blinny>
I've changed the network cable to the one I'm using now
06:51
OK, thanks.
06:51
<jammcq>
are you seeing the request ?
06:52
ie, on the server, in /var/log/daemon, do you see the request from the client?
06:52
<Blinny>
Yeah.
06:52
<jammcq>
has anybody changed anything?
06:52
<Blinny>
There's also a spurious 'connection reset by peer' or something in there too
06:52
I'm waiting for my assistant to get in, but I dunno what he could have changed.
06:53
Oh gawd
06:53
maybe I'm wasting your time
06:53
this is in the middle of the logs
06:53
smbd[25345]: read_data: read failure for 4 bytes to client 192.168.169.15. Error = Connection reset by peer
06:53
<jammcq>
heh
06:53
what's smbd doing in there?
06:53
<Blinny>
(before and after this are the offer/discovers for .15)
06:53
I have no idea.
06:53
Maybe weird/malformed UDP things?
06:54
<jammcq>
me neither
06:54
well, if it's smbd complaining, you must be hitting one of the ports it uses
06:54
<Blinny>
Right
06:54
<jammcq>
makes no sense to me
06:54
<Blinny>
Me neither. I'll try to wireshark it and see just what is going on

06:55
<Blinny>
ogra: No.
06:55
<jammcq>
also, if you do send email to 'support', include a copy of your dhcpd.conf file
06:55
<Blinny>
jammcq: Ok.

06:56
<Blinny>
ogra: Well, I don't know for sure.. like I said, I did just return from vacation. However, if one of these dolts figured out how to install not only a win server but a win dhcpd service, I'll eat my hat.

btw is that a way to limit the memory Xorg can use ?
07:39
when using a big presentation with openoffice, xorg uses a lot of memory
07:39
the terminal has 128 megs of ram and 32 megs of swap
07:40
free
07:40
total used free shared buffers cached
07:40
Mem: 108868 105708 3160 0 0 9744
07:40
-/+ buffers/cache: 95964 12904
07:40
Swap: 32760 32760 0
07:40
so the terminal is border line to kill xorg

11:49
<Gadi>
heh, if you are setting up dhcpd failover, make sure you get the port and peer port right on both sides - or better yet - make 'em the same! ;P
11:50
<moquist>
Mmm. Yes.
11:50* moquist nods sagely
11:50
<Gadi>
yeah, I know you knew that
11:50
hey, any bad reason to have a 5-minute mclt?
11:50
instead of an hour
11:51
3600 seems pretty darn excessive to me
11:51
but, I havent had that drink yet
11:51* moquist googles mclt
11:51
<moquist>
"Montgomery County Lands Trust" ? Hmm.
11:51
<Gadi>
i thought you were one of the dhcpd failover wizards
11:52* moquist has found it
11:52
<moquist>
heck no, not a "wizard"
11:52
we're using it in production, but I've never messed with the mclt or even the ports.
11:53
I just basically configure two servers enough to know about each other and keep track of each other, but I haven't done any further fine-tuning than that.
11:53
<Gadi>
ah, do you set yours to 3600
11:53
as in the docs?
11:54
<moquist>
Oh, right. *That* number.
11:54* moquist has configured this, like, four times, ever.
11:55
<moquist>
We're using 1200.
11:55
I'm sure I copied and pasted it from a webpage telling me how to do this.
11:55
Or maybe a man page.
11:55
<Gadi>
ok. ill bump mine up from the whimpy 300 that I put

12:00
Gadi: I've been less involved this year than I have been in the past, so that's another way he could've slipped through. (I've had nothing to do with divvying up the supplies this time, for example.)

how do i install the i386 and amd files? can somebody point me to a howto or some documentation pls.
18:07
<lns>
estong_, you can use either one
18:07
amd64 dists pose some problems with things like firefox flash/java plugins
18:08
but if it's worth working with to you, all the other apps are compiled for 64-bit so it would benefit in speed
18:09
<estong_>
u mean i can use debian i386 or amd to install as server OS?

yes

amd 64bit cpus should always be 32-bit backward compatible
