Question: is there a way to get every single client to login as a separate user automatically without manually setting AUTOLOGIN for every single MAC address in ltsp.conf?
02:59
<alkisg>
Yes, as long as you can derive the username from the hostname using a regex
03:42
<eu^273447248>
Yeah... so I'm doing it manually now...

What are your hostnames and your usernames like, e.g. pc01 and guest01

I wassetting up new ubuntu 20.4 ltsp installation AUTOLOGIN with gdm3 + default session Exec=env GNOME_SHELL_SESSION_MODE=ubuntu /usr/bin/gnome-session --systemd --session=ubuntu. It did not autologin at all. I was hoping it would login with the wayland session
07:29
<alkisg>
vsuojanen: when you specified AUTOLOGIN, did you also set the PASSWORD?
07:33
<vsuojanen>
no, I have used LIGHTDM and NFS homes before and it worked without that in ltsp.conf
07:34
<alkisg>
Indeed with NFS homes it should work. Is the setup available now, can you paste the generated /etc/gdm/custom.conf?
07:34
(on the ltsp client)
07:35
<vsuojanen>
ok. just a moment
07:42
https://pastebin.com/Zcs4LNey
07:45
alkisg: sorry I have to be away I'm not able to read the chat now for next couple hours
10:09
<alkisg>
The generated /etc/gdm/custom.conf seems fine, I see no ltsp issue there
11:21
<vsuojanen>
alkisg I think I have the default session missing from somewhere in gdm3 configuration. just haven't found it
11:50
the gear balloon on bottom right in gdm3 it's now Ubuntu for the autologin user and not Ubuntu (Wayland). This is just one issue with gnome-session, I think I continue testing the gnome some time and will switch to lightdm and mate-session, i think gnome-sesison require too much from clients in the environment
12:01
<alkisg>
So autologin works, but it's using xorg instead of wayland?
12:21
<vsuojanen>
the gear balloon tells it's using Ubuntu.
12:23
apparently it has not worked. I need to select Ubuntu (Wayland) from the gear balloon

<vsuojanen>
I can't see where and what configuration affects the default as I have in /usr/share/xsessions files mate.desktop and ubuntu.desktop
13:19
<alkisg>
I still haven't understood if autologin works or not
13:19
"it works with the wrong session", or "it doesn't autologin"?
13:19
<vsuojanen>
alkisg: thank you for your time, I was configuring custom session script for autologin where I had directly copied the Ubuntu.desktop line Exec=, and that's where the issue was. autologin resolved but it's not using wayland mode
13:20
<alkisg>
The session type is also saved per-user, in either /var/lib/AccountsService or in ~/.dmrc etc
13:20
Does the problem happen in a newly created user?
13:20
Run `adduser test` directly on the ltsp client,
13:20
then edit custom.conf to specify the test user,
13:20
then systemctl restart gdm3, and see if it autologins on wayland
13:20
All that without client reboot
13:21
Btw, Ubuntu 20.04 defaults to xorg anyway, right?
13:21
So maybe you need to specify a gdm directive to default to wayland?
13:27
<vsuojanen>
yes. I see. I thought it would be wayland default in Ubuntu all beginnning from the gdm
13:28
well autlogin, it is now working
13:32
I will worry about wayland if needed
13:33
thank you for the time
