13:14 | <Hyperbyt1> Hi al-geo.
| |
13:14 | <al-geo> hi
| |
13:14 | <Hyperbyt1> You want to autologin in LTSP with the root user?
| |
13:15 | <al-geo> yes
| |
13:15 | <Hyperbyt1> Why on earth would you want that?
| |
13:15 | <al-geo> :D i need
| |
13:15 | local program need (not me)
| |
13:15 | <Hyperbyt1> You shouldn't even log in with the root user yourself.
| |
13:15 | <||cw> if you think you need autologin as root, you are asking the wrong questions...
| |
13:16 | use sudo, or a su and screen in an rc.local, or something like that
| |
13:16 | <al-geo> ||cw i didnt get it. why?
| |
13:16 | <Hyperbyt1> Or fix the permissions, so the program can run under a normal user account.
| |
13:16 | <||cw> local gui login as root is a fairly big no-no in the linux world
| |
13:17 | <al-geo> is it posible or imposible with ltsp?
| |
13:17 | <||cw> so what's the real problem?
| |
13:18 | https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/AutoLoginFeatures
| |
13:18 | <Hyperbyt1> al-geo, it is possible, but it is a _very_, _very_ bad idea.
| |
13:18 | <||cw> if you want your server's root PW in plain text, yeah, you can autologin
| |
13:18 | but the question is why do this
| |
13:19 | there are better ways to solve the issue, depending on what it is
| |
13:19 | <al-geo> Hyperbyt1 i know. but its necessery
| |
13:19 | <||cw> no it isn't
| |
13:19 | why do you think it's necessary
| |
13:19 | <Hyperbyt1> al-geo, all your users will be able to delete system files, to change system settings, to shutdown the server, to access everyone's private files, to install third-party software, to open virusses... you WILL regret it.
| |
13:19 | Hyperbyt1 is now known as Hyperbyte
13:20 | <Hyperbyte> What you need to do, is fix it so the program can run as normal user. Why does the program need root permissions? What does it do?
| |
13:20 | <||cw> for the 2nd part, there is a guide for making images for client distros other than the server version, but it's not exactly trivial
| |
13:24 | <al-geo> ||cw server version can be same but i have working physical machines with running program and can i save system in some mysystem.img and after login in thisimage from fat client?
| |
13:25 | <||cw> it'll be easier to install the program in the normal way
| |
13:26 | <al-geo> no it will not this local program is very old and very hard to install from start. is it posible? and where can i find the man or can you teach me?
| |
13:30 | <||cw> hm, I can't find the guide I once saw, it's probably out of date now anyway
| |
13:30 | basically turn your current install into a chroot and then get the ltsp scripts and extra packages installed.
| |
13:31 | then you can build it as an image.
| |
13:31 | but if you can't work out how to not require local root GUI login, you're going to have a very hard time doing this too
| |
13:31 | you have much learning to do
| |
13:33 | you might have more success just making the system work via nfs booting, mostly outside of ltsp, but there's a lot of overlap there
| |
13:34 | mikkel has joined IRC (mikkel!~mikkel@mail.dlvs.dk)
13:36 | <al-geo> :D ok. got it.
| |
13:37 | <||cw> al-geo: I have had very few issues making old programs work on newer systems, but I mostly stick to debian based things
| |
13:38 | compiling old programs can be difficult, but if you have all the binaries from a working system, it's rather easy to move them to a new system

13:52 | <Hyperbyte> al-geo, did you consider running the program in a virtual machine and making it available to users via VNC?
| |
13:52 | Not sure how many people at once need to use it, and if the program integrates into the desktop
| |
13:53 | But that could be a nice workaround in some situations.

17:13 | <cfkane> Hi all. Right now I have five LTSP servers running, all on Debian Jessie and all just fine. I've built a sixth server, just the same but this one will not deliver the tftp part of the client boot process. DHCP ACKs the client but TFTP fails. Configs between this server and its mate are identical except for IP addresses for NEXT SERVER. What are some of the things that might be causing the failure? The first five servers were so simple. What might I be missing
| |
17:13 | here? Thanks!
| |
17:14 | <alkisg> cfkane: try to use a standalone client to get stuff from the tftp server, to see if it's working OK

17:31 | <cfkane> Just FYI, Debian is setting up tftp to source /srv/tftp/ltsp/ instead of /var/lib/tftpboot/. I left it like this since it workd for the other five. Both paths end with the same files; I think they're hard links, or 'ltsp-build-client' creates dupes, just in case due to distro differences.
| |
17:32 | <vagrantc> ltsp-update-kernels will create the files in all the known tftp locations
| |
17:32 | which is, honestly, really confusing
| |
17:33 | <cfkane> Sorry, I just saw the '/srv/' bug mentioned on that link. Sorry for the noise.
| |
17:33 | <vagrantc> tftpd-hpa creates /srv/tftp/, and i think one of the ltsp-server packages creates or ships /var/lib/tftpboot/, and ltsp-update-kernels just copies to all directories
| |
17:34 | i really should have put the time in to switch the default on debian to use dnsmasq and /var/lib/tftpboot by default...
| |
17:44 | <alkisg> +1 :)
| |
17:45 | vagrantc: let's implement an "ltsp-config pnp" which does everything :D
