<nubae>
wow... never ever use multiple methods of entering users
14:51
or u will pay for it in serious time
14:51
here they used command line, gui, and webmin
14:52
wow... I'm on my second day of unravelling this spaghetti mess

nubae, there's no problem with editing users both via command line and GUI, as long as you use compatible tools that edit in the same backend.

<vagrantc>
webmin went unmaintained so many years for a reason
15:01
<nubae>
believe me, Iǘe been doing this for 2 days now
15:01
if a user exists in /etc/passwd
15:02
and u try and delete it from the gui
15:02
the next time u start up the gui, the user is still there
15:02Steve_the_Pirate has left IRC (Steve_the_Pirate!~Gary@host86-166-104-72.range86-166.btcentralplus.com, Quit: Leaving)
15:02
<vagrantc>
nubae: what mess have you gotten yourself tangled with this time?
15:02
<nubae>
the other way round works though
15:03
ie... delete a user from /etc/passwd and it reflects in the gui when one saves
15:04
its not my mess, its a mess im sorting out at a school that was using ltsp, then the ltsp connoseur left
15:04
they decided to install windows on the systems, but left the server intact
15:04
and I'm now undoing that mess
15:05
they were editing users in both webmin and gui
15:05
which really screwed things up
15:06
but a surrising thing was that if u have a user in /etc/passwd, and u open the gui, delete the user from the gui
15:06
then restart the gui, the user is still there
15:06
and hasnt been expunged from /etc/passwd either
15:06
this may be webmin mess though
15:06
<vagrantc>
sounds like a pretty buggy gui user manager
15:06
<Hyperbyte>
"may be" ? :-)
15:07
<nubae>
well... i thought it was pretty buggy yeah, but cant blame it really only on that since they used webmin
15:07
uninstalling webmin was the first step
15:08
now im manually fixing stuff by comparing /etc/group with /etc/passwd and the gui
15:08
oh... and the gui has stopped showing several fields altogether :-)
15:08
so yes, its buggy
15:08
very buggy
15:09
maybe on restart the gui will go back to normal when ive fixed everything
15:09
well see
15:09
but its an interesting test case
15:09
<Hyperbyte>
It could also be that your nsswitch or pam config is borked.
15:09
<nubae>
nah, then no logins would work
15:10
and they do if u put a new user in the gui
15:10
or fix it by hand
15:10
its not a pam thing for sure
15:11
its either buggy gui, or webmin discharge
15:11
either way i charge by the hour so
15:11
:p
15:13
is the user gui coded in python?
15:13
maybe i could take a look
15:17Steve_the_Pirate has joined IRC (Steve_the_Pirate!~Gary@host86-166-104-72.range86-166.btcentralplus.com)
15:22
<nubae>
basically... it should be added somewhere to the ltsp guide that if u are cleaning your user database u should clean it from /etc/passwd, then save, and it will reflect in your gui
15:22
the reverse is _not_ true
15:23
<Hyperbyte>
Why? That's not exactly an LTSP issue...
15:23
Probably better to report the bug to the maintainers of the GUI
15:24
And seriously doubt you can reproduce it on a new install, to be honest.
15:24
<nubae>
the gui is for ltsp users isnt it?
15:24
bewt
15:24
bet i can
15:24
:p
15:24
<Hyperbyte>
What I mean is - the GUI isn't part of the LTSP package. :)
15:24
<nubae>
wger?
15:24
wager?
15:24
<Hyperbyte>
And I think, if you really can, and report the bug with details... it'll be fixed quickly.
15:25
<nubae>
hmmm
15:25
nothing is ever fixed quickly
15:25
unless one does it themselves
15:26

<kusznir>
Hi all: I've still got my problems getting thin clients to boot, and I'm completely out of troubleshooting ideas.
21:44
My thin clients are successfully pxe'ing the kernel and initrd, and the kernel starts to load. At some point, the screen goes completely blank, and the client goes completely unresponsive and stays that way until hard-reset.
21:46
I've tried ubuntu 10:10 and 11:04 images,a nd both break. However, everything does work with my (very old) server running 9:11 or something like that.
21:46
I've turned off all the quiet options
21:47
The kernel spews a lot out as it boots, but then goes blank near the end still. I don't know how to turn that off. Terminals are DevonIT (eg, Atom 230/Intel video based)
21:47
<Lns>
kusznir: I have to run, and don't know the rest of your troubleshooting background, but it sounds like a video driver issue. Try CTRL+ALT+F1, do you get a local TTY login? Try setting a root password in the chroot and log in to look at the X.org logs if that's the case.
21:48
<kusznir>
Lns: tried that, ctrl-alt-* have no effect.
21:48
It really appears the terminals hard-lock at that point.
21:48
<Lns>
wow
21:48
have you tried remote syslog to try and pinpoint the problem?
21:48
<kusznir>
No. Do I need to do anyting explicit to enable remote syslog?
21:49
<Lns>
an lts.conf option
21:49
it's been a while for me, but hopefully that will log something that the TC isn't showing you
21:49
Can you ping the TC when they supposedly hard-lock?
21:50
<kusznir>
Haven't tried that either; I'll figure out what IP they're getting.
21:50
<Lns>
if you can, try enabling sshd and maybe you can log in that way to examine logs.
21:51
Gotta run, but good luck!
21:51
<kusznir>
thanks!

It never responds to ping.
21:54
so network doesn't load and thus it never remote-syslog's anything.

crap...i d think ogra would be on from Maine n a few hours..

<kusznir>
I'm finding a post about my hardware from my old version that talks about the broke intel video drivers, but no bugfixes planned.
22:06
I'm not finding anything relevent to current versions, though.

Further updates: netbooting a desktop loads just fine.
22:25
Booting the thin client in question with a USB CDrom drive and an ubuntu 11.04 disk suffers the same problem (initially). After messing with options, acpi=off seems to make it boot.
22:25
That also shows me that the place at which the crash normally occurs is when the console font is applied.

kusznir, i am so far behind i cant begin to help..
22:31

Adding "nolapic" seems to have gotten me through that mess.
22:32
Now I have to undo enough of my debugging to actually get it to boot semi-normally :)
22:32
<cliebow>
good grief..

I'm tempted to try and start over with a clean server install now, and just remember to add those two back in :)

i can ask the "floatng heads" to think about it..

My main server is a nice, rackmount machine running Xen. I run my own network enviornment, but its for a research lab, so there's more than just ltsp running on it...for example, I have a dedicated router/firewall that does dhcp. In any case, the main goal I'm trying to design now is: 1) a dedicated ltsp thin client server (eg, only handles thin client booting/os stuff; NOT running X), and 2 ubuntu VMs that are my main terminal servers that the
22:36
thin clients log users into.
22:37
All three VMs run on the Xen server (with about a half dozen other VMs necessary to make my network run)

wow...ltsp docs are pretty bad..."upstream" docs are often covering ltsp 4.2 code instead of the current 5.x release.
