i'm getting two errors (i was in here yesterday asking after help) : first " * INIT: cannot execute "/sbin/getty" ", and the second is " * INIT: Id "[1-6]" respawning too fast: disabed for 5 minutes" (the 1-6 means there is the error for each nujmber), and between them is 3 nfs:rpc errors. then it says " * INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel ", then 3 more nfs: rpc things

sbalneav: hey! don't know if you saw my email, i got ltspfs mostly working with etch :)
11:55
<sbalneav>
Oh! Awesome!!!
11:56
<vagrantc>
sbalneav: and i have some patches for you
11:56
<sbalneav>
I got my etch box updated last night, and fooled around with some of the udes stuff
11:56
sure! Send!
11:56
<vagrantc>
udes?
11:56
<sbalneav>
err dev
11:56
udev
11:56
<vagrantc>
sbalneav: you're subscribed to ltsp-developer ?
11:56
<sbalneav>
yeah, but I haven't had time to look there for about 2 weeks :)
11:57
<vagrantc>
sbalneav: ah, well, there's a message in there with the subject "ltspfs upstream"
11:57
<sbalneav>
OK, looking now.
11:58
<vagrantc>
sbalneav: http://llama.freegeek.org/~vagrant/bzr/ltspfs/vagrant-ltspfs/
11:58
<sbalneav>
ok
11:58
<vagrantc>
sbalneav: that's my bzr branch with patches for upstream.
11:58
<sbalneav>
got it.
11:58
I'll diff it today, see what you fixed up.
11:58
<vagrantc>
i think all of those should be safe to merge.
11:58
there's also some things worth considering in my packaging branch, but some are debian-specific.
11:59
<sbalneav>
ok
11:59
<vagrantc>
i'm thinking it would be better to have the udev rule call a wrapper script, rather than *_fstab_entry directly.
12:00
<sbalneav>
We're just about to do a systems shutdown to grab data out of our database, and get it to our developers, so I won't be able to look at it until I get home today, but, I should be home by 4:00 or so.
12:00
sure.
12:00
<vagrantc>
ok. good luck :)
12:00
<sbalneav>
Argh. I'll need it. :)
12:00vanya has quit IRC
12:01
<vagrantc>
i think the only thing holding me back at this point is getting a more perfect udev rule.
12:02
<Gadi>
vagrantc: you thinking something withh "add" or "remove" as an argument?
12:02
<vagrantc>
Gadi: yeah.
12:02vanya has joined #ltsp
12:02
<Gadi>
yeah, I thought the same
12:02
<vagrantc>
and, at least for debian policy compliance, we should stick it in /etc
12:03
(just so we can still have all the iles there when the package is removed, but not purged)
12:03
<Gadi>
BTW< I put together a mechanism for automounting drives with autofs+udev (for non XDMCP/ldm screen scripts)
12:03
<vagrantc>
and then properly exit out if ltspfsd isn't actually installed.
12:03
<Gadi>
just need to put it thru some testing
12:03
<vagrantc>
Gadi: cool! :)
12:04
<vanya>
just curious: is xorg 7.x support planned for ltsp?..
12:04muh2000 has quit IRC
12:04
<Gadi>
the only design thing I am debating over is whether to use /var/run/drives or have a separate /var/run/autodrives to be safe
12:04
<vagrantc>
vanya: it will be in the debian/etch version
12:04
Gadi: i was thinking it should be /var/run/ltspfs/drives, myself.
12:05
"drives" might be a little generic.
12:05
<Gadi>
ah. that certainly would make things clearer
12:05* vagrantc wonders if /var/run is really where it belongs ...
12:05
<vanya>
vagrantc, and what about other distros?.. I am using Gentoo
12:05
<Gadi>
heh, that thought crossed my mind, too
12:05
<vagrantc>
vanya: well, with LTSP 5.0, what ever your distro is using will be what the LTSP uses.
12:06
but i'm glad to see it out of /tmp :)
12:06
<Gadi>
well, /media atm is ro
12:06
presumably by design
12:06
of course, when you look at how many tmpfs mounts there are, it cant be for lack of trying! ;)
12:07
<vagrantc>
mounting directly into media seems like it would be a better idea ...
12:07
<vanya>
so I think it will take a long time after somebody adopts this in Gentoo.. sad :(
12:07
<vagrantc>
Gadi: well, you can easily add it to the list
12:07
<Gadi>
right
12:07
<sbalneav>
vagrantc: The problem with that is, you need to make /media writable by users.
12:07
<vagrantc>
vanya: there are people working on it. dberkholz, i know. i'm sure they would appreciate help.
12:07
<vanya>
I just have problems with my video card support
12:07
<Gadi>
doesnt LSB have an opinion?
12:07
<sbalneav>
so therefore, it could become a "second home dir", with users putting things in root
12:07
<Gadi>
seems most put in media
12:08
<vagrantc>
sbalneav: not on the thin-client side...
12:08
<sbalneav>
for people who have separate /tmp partitions, and /home partitions, and don't want users actually writing in / this is a proble,
12:08
oh, right, thin client side.
12:08
sure, there it doesn't matter.
12:08
argh, one of my users won't log off :(
12:09muh2000 has joined #ltsp
12:09
<vagrantc>
and why can't we mount it in ~/.ltspfs-mounts/usbdisk-sda4 ?
12:09
why /tmp ?
12:09
though skipping the bind-mount part altogether would be nice.
12:10
it will be impossible to keep ltspfs working in etch :(
12:10* vagrantc wants to change so many things
12:10
<vagrantc>
i suspect i'll want people to use a backported ltsp, so maybe it's not much of a problem.
12:12* vagrantc stares at the udev rules, hoping by magic something will make itself obvious
12:12vanya has quit IRC
12:12
<Gadi>
vagrantc: adding an add/remove arg to the rule is not hard
12:13
<vagrantc>
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="block", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="?*", RUN+="add_fstab_entry %k $ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}"
12:13
<Gadi>
what the staring?
12:13
<vagrantc>
the ENV stuff isn't working for me.
12:13
so i just dropped it all and hard-coded "auto"
12:13
<Gadi>
does udev not set and ENV var in debian ?
12:14
maybe the udev versions are different
12:14
<vagrantc>
which works, although partitions that aren't a recognized filesystem type get ghost mounts that aren't actually on the device
12:14
<Gadi>
ah
12:14
<vagrantc>
this works: ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="block", RUN+="add_fstab_entry %k auto"
12:14
the above doesn't.
12:14
<Gadi>
do you have vol_id?
12:14
<vagrantc>
a command?
12:14
<Gadi>
in /lib/udev/
12:14
yeah
12:15* vagrantc looks
12:15
<vagrantc>
yes
12:16
<Gadi>
hmm
12:16
<vagrantc>
Gadi: what would i do with it?
12:16
<Gadi>
sudo /lib/udev/vol_id /dev/sda1
12:16
or some such
12:16
a device with a filesystem
12:16
thats what retrieves ID_FS_TYPE
12:16
AFAIK
12:17
<vagrantc>
so i could maybe call it manually?
12:17
<Gadi>
perhaps add a rule to call it manually and export as ENV vars
12:17
or something
12:18
or call it manually in the script
12:18
<vagrantc>
and just how would i go about that?
12:18
i could do the manual call from the script, at least.
12:18
<Gadi>
hmm, well the udev rule is using it as a conditional
12:18
to determine whether to run the script
12:19
<vagrantc>
right
12:19
<Gadi>
I sppose you could add a line to the top of the script that....
12:19
<vagrantc>
right ...
12:19
<Gadi>
exits if the ID_FS_TYPE is empty
12:19
<vagrantc>
just to get *somehing* working.
12:20
<Gadi>
right
12:20
its equivalent
12:20
<vagrantc>
then we can figure out how to do it better.
12:20
<Gadi>
right
12:20sbalneav has quit IRC
12:20
<Gadi>
but, it should be most like the ubuntu way
12:21
<vagrantc>
i need to set up an ubuntu xen environment or soemthing.
12:22
<Gadi>
ah...
12:22
perhaps a rule to: IMPORT{program}="vol_id --export"
12:23
<vagrantc>
that does happen ...
12:23
at least, i think it happens
12:23
<Gadi>
er
12:23
need the dev
12:23
<vagrantc>
z20_persistent.rules:IMPORT{program}="vol_id --export $tempnode"
12:23
ah.
12:23efra has quit IRC

hello
12:26
what news about ltsp?
12:26
:D
12:27

12:27muh2000 has quit IRC

12:28

unless the device isn't yet created ...
12:28
<Gadi>

12:29
er, '='s
12:29gigabytes has quit IRC
12:29
<Gadi>
thats what i meant
12:29
<vagrantc>
heh.
12:29
IMPORT{program}="vol_id --export %k"
12:29
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="block", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="?*", RUN+="add_fstab_entry %k $ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}"
12:29
is what i'm using.
12:30
is the ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="?*" just checking for a non-null value?
12:30
<Gadi>
I believe so
12:31
seems a bit superfluous
12:31
better in the script
12:31
<vagrantc>
well, it's probably more efficient to not spawn a shell.
12:31* Gadi votes for an exit line in script if FS_TYPE is null
12:31
<vagrantc>
i'll try in the script
12:31mrlinux has joined #ltsp
12:32
<Gadi>
geesh - we get so worried about extra millisecond shells....
12:32* vagrantc seems to recall gadi complaining a lot about boot times
12:33
<Gadi>
:P
12:33
alright. we'll clock the shell speed on a local device insertion against loading ldm
12:33
:)
12:34
<vagrantc>
i have long dreamed of providing a faster but compatible version of ldm. sdm just isn't pretty enough for most users...
12:35
it worked!
12:35
<Gadi>
sweet
12:35
which combo?
12:35
<vagrantc>
i just put a check for ID_FS_TYPE in the script.
12:35
<mrlinux>
it apperars that i can only connect to the internet if i have my firefox open eg. i can't download packages in synaptic but i can when firefox is open
12:36
why is that
12:36
<vagrantc>
mrlinux: do you have an http proxy set up?
12:36
Gadi: thanks for your help!
12:36
<mrlinux>
nope no proxy
12:37
<Gadi>
vagrantc: and that was the only mod?
12:38
<vagrantc>
Gadi: well, i had to drop the ENV stuff from the udev rule.
12:38
<Gadi>
did you change the udev rule at all?
12:38
ah
12:38
<mrlinux>
and now i cant even open my file browser it kills the window right off
12:38
<Gadi>
thought so
12:38
all those extra shells....
12:39* vagrantc prepares more patches for scotty
12:40
<vagrantc>
how would udev handle if i exited with an unclean mount ...
12:40
<Gadi>
so, I have an academic theory that needs testing wrt ldm speed
12:40
<vagrantc>
er... "exit 1" vs. "exit 0"
12:40
<Gadi>
I think its slow because of all the pieces loading over NFS
12:40
Im thinking of storing the theme as a tarball, copy to temp, unpack, and then load
12:40
what dya reckon?
12:40
<vagrantc>
that would certainly test the speed.
12:41
you could also just install it on a local hard drive
12:41
<Gadi>
not sure if its the images in the theme or also the glade files
12:41
may have to try same with glade and gtk
12:41
true
12:42
<vagrantc>
for some reason, it failed to remove the fstab entry when i removed my usb stick :(
12:43
but it removed the other entry (this stick has several partitions)
12:45
it never seems to remove my sda4 from fstab ... but it always catches sda1
12:45* vagrantc wonders what having multiple entries in fstab does.
12:46
<vagrantc>
any ideas weather ltspfs will work across NAT ?
12:46
using ldm?
12:46* vagrantc tries
12:46
<mrlinux>
naultlis fails it wont load
12:46

12:48
<Gadi>
vagrantc: should work. Its an ssh tunnel
12:48
<vagrantc>
mrlinux: i don't really use nautilus, sorry.
12:49
Gadi: i think only part of it goes through the tunnel ...
12:49
Gadi: cause it didn't work.
12:49
<Gadi>
vagrantc: run vol_id on the partition
12:49

i am using edubuntu
12:49
<vagrantc>
Gadi: it's vfat
12:49
Gadi: nothing weird comes up.
12:50
strangely, it seemed to work fine yesterday when i had hard-coded them all to mount with filesystem "auto"
12:50
and the remove code doesn't even use the filesystem type, just the device name
12:51
mrlinux: it sounds like your problems are more than LTSP ... maybe try the edubuntu support channel(s) ?
12:52* vagrantc tries without NAT
12:52
<jammcq>
hey, who knows of a GUI manpage reader?
12:52
<Gadi>
apt-cache
12:52
<jammcq>
tried that
12:52
he doesn't know
12:53
<vagrantc>
xman ?
12:53* vagrantc cringes
12:53
<jammcq>
xman exists on my system, but doens't seem to work
12:53
<Gadi>
gmanedit
12:53
though thats an editor
12:53
<vagrantc>
that's a manpage editor
12:54
<Gadi>
but, ya gotta view to edit, right?
12:54
<vagrantc>
i bet the gnome or KDE help systems have some sort of manpage interface
12:54gigabytes has joined #ltsp
12:54
<vagrantc>
Gadi: yes, but you also view it in the .roff format :P
12:55
i know i've seem GUI manpage viewers
12:55
<Gadi>
there's always man2html + firefox
12:55
<jammcq>
I used to see manpage viewers but not so much anymore
12:56
<vagrantc>
it's too old-school.
12:56
gnome probably disabled it so as not to scare their users with arcane information.
12:57
<Gadi>
ah, gman
12:57
<jammcq>
bash: gman: command not found
12:57
<Gadi>
apt-get install gman
12:57
<vagrantc>
and don't forget tkman!
12:58* vagrantc cringes some more
12:58
<jammcq>
hmm, it seems that 'yelp' replaces 'gman'
12:59
<Gadi>
install gv for added pleasure
12:59
<jammcq>
I use gv all the time
12:59* jammcq writes postscript in his spare time
12:59
<Gadi>
are you on dapper or edgy?
12:59
or other?
13:00
<jammcq>
dapper
13:00
<Gadi>
ah, there ya go
13:00
<jammcq>
looks like yelp does a nice job
13:00
<Gadi>
yelp has a section on man pages
13:01
bbiab
13:02
<vagrantc>
Gadi: alright, well... thanks for your help! i now have ltspfs working reasonably well with etch :)
13:21
<Gadi>
heh, so just installing ldm and running it from a vt didnt seem to be the best move out of the gate
13:22
endless spawning loop from hell
13:22mrlinux has quit IRC
13:32
<vagrantc>
Gadi: you probably need to set some environment variables.
13:33
<Gadi>
hmm.. prolly
13:35
<vagrantc>
SERVER probably
13:35
SERVER=127.0.0.1 ldm
13:35
:)
13:38
<Gadi>
nope
13:38
prolly needs more
13:38
grr
13:39dberkholz has left #ltsp
13:39
<Gadi>
prolly need ltsp-client
13:39* vagrantc ran it without ltsp-client in the past
13:43
<Gadi>
vagrantc: do you know what package includes /usr/lib/ltsp/python ?
13:43
<vagrantc>
Gadi: it was simply there to support debian/sarge backports. it's not used by anything else.
13:44
<Gadi>
ah
13:44
<vagrantc>
we should remove it, as i don't think anyone's going to actually attempt to backport to sarge at this point.
13:46* Gadi thinks it is gnomecanvas having trouble....
13:46
<Gadi>
hmmm
13:47
draws a square and then barfs
13:50
<vagrantc>
ogra: what commands do i have to run in order to get ltspfs to build from bzr?!
13:52g333k_laptop has joined #ltsp
13:53
<vagrantc>
ogra: it complains that AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE: command not found
13:53
i ran autoconf and automake
14:06
autoconf spits out some errors.
14:07
package builds fine from the ltspfs-0.4.3.orig.tar.gz from ubuntu ...
14:07
i guess i'll just use dpatch or quilt and implement the patches that way ...
14:08
<Gadi>
which little old lady programmer wrote quilt?
14:08
man, this used to be such a manly field
14:10
<vagrantc>
well, looking at the AUTHORS, i hardly think it's a little old lady. though not sure with Gerd Knorr ...
14:10
<Gadi>
heh. say, vagrantc, does ldm run on a hard drive for you?
14:10
do you have a way to check?
14:10* vagrantc contemplates
14:10
<Gadi>
(before I give up this pursuit)
14:11
be careful
14:11
I need to ssh from another box to kill the loop
14:11
so, dont do it unless you're well networked ;)
14:15* vagrantc gives up
14:15
<vagrantc>
i tried just running it from within an LTSP chroot, but no luck.
14:15
but i think that's because i couldn't get X to work in the chroot more than problems with ldm
14:16
<Gadi>
no worries
14:16
thx anyway

heres the situation when i try to boot my clients with a HUB they boot right up. however when i try to boot from a SWITCH it gives me errors
14:48
<vagrantc>
you might need to reset the switch to factory defaults.
14:48
<mrlinux>
the errors are PXE-E32: TFTP open time out PXE-E32 TFTP open time out
14:48
<vagrantc>
does this switch work for regular machines?
14:48gigabytes has joined #ltsp

i.e. not ltsp clients?
14:49
<mrlinux>
yes
14:49gigabytes has quit IRC
14:49* vagrantc has no idea then
14:50
<mrlinux>
does anyone else have any ideas
14:52
vagrantc, but when i load with a hub it doesn't show TFTP but when with switch it shows TFTP i know that my udp port 69 is open to accept the TFTP so i am stumped
14:53
<jammcq>
mrlinux: Can you turn off Spanning-tree on the switch?
14:53
<mrlinux>
what is spanning tree
14:54
it is an unmanaged switch
14:54
a dlink DSS-5+
14:54
<jammcq>
search wikipedia for a full description. It's basically a protocol in the switch for detecting and correcting network loops
14:54
ah, the old DSS-5+. is it like 2000 degrees right now?
14:54
those suckers run hot
14:55
<mrlinux>
i'll check
14:56
no it's cool and calm
14:57
<jammcq>
hmm, mine always ran hot
14:57
anyway, it's prolly not spanning tree then
14:57
have you tried a different port on the switch?
14:57
<mrlinux>
yes
14:57
personaly i think the switch is messed
14:57cliebow has joined #ltsp

could just be a negotiation problem between your nick and your switch
14:57
can you try a different cable?
14:58cliebow has left #ltsp
14:58
<mrlinux>
give me 2 mins
14:59
ok trying server with new cable
15:00
now i get a no dhcp or bootp offers recived
15:05
so what do u think i should do
15:06
<jammcq>
well, changing the cable altered the problem. SO, change the cable again
15:07
<mrlinux>
ok
15:08
rebooting as we speak
15:09
i have a question why is it trying to go through TFTP when before on a HUB it wasnt
15:10
tftp time out agian
15:10
<jammcq>
did you say with a HUB it worked?
15:10
<mrlinux>
yes
15:10
<jammcq>
then it WAS using tftp
15:10
<mrlinux>
no not using
15:10
<Megant_>
gf
15:10
o_O
15:10
<jammcq>
if it worked, it was using TFTP
15:10
no doubt about it
15:11
<Megant_>
nothing..
15:11
<jammcq>
LTSP doesn't work at all, without tftp
15:11
<mrlinux>
but i never saw any tftp read outs on my screen until i went to a switch
15:12
<jammcq>
cuz it was working fine
15:12
when things are working correctly, it happens so fast, you can't see it
15:12
when there's problems, you'll see it
15:12
<mrlinux>
so how do i fix my problem
15:12
<jammcq>
well, seems you have a networking issue. Can you try a different switch?
15:13
<mrlinux>
ok this will be the 3rd one
15:13
<jammcq>
3rd switch?
15:13
another DSS-5 ?

15:28
<mrlinux>
yes both eth0 and eth1
15:28
<jammcq>
plugged into what?
15:28
what is eth0 plugged into ?
15:29
<mrlinux>
eth0 is pluged into my schools network eth1 is plugged into the switch
15:29
<jammcq>
what is the IP address of eth0 ?
15:29
<mrlinux>
172.x.x.x
15:29
