Webcam question - I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 32-Bit, and am trying to get a USB Microsoft LifeCam 3000 to work locally at the Thin Client. I wish to use it with a localapp Skype that is running. I have an Acer Aspire One Netbook with built-in webcam that does not seem to work either - using the same Skype localapp. Any ideas? I read a short piece from many years ago about needing to ensure user was in "VIDEO" group..otherwise haven't found much
03:45
info online. Thanks,

hi, i dont know what to do next. Im trying to run thin client with GF5200FX video card (ubuntu 10.10). And i cant configure video to use proper resolution. How can i debug this or fix? Im using http://pastebin.com/TxJc4mC9 with nvidia-glx-173 driver

<mealstrom>
when client logins , it uses server resources vga16fb driver
06:44
<elias_a>
vmlintu: Morning to you!
06:44
And to all of you people as well :)
06:51
<trubbor>
mealstom: what happens on the client when it starts?
06:52
<mealstrom>
trubbor: resolution of login screen is 640*480. when i entered log and pass -- > its log in and resolution is same or you can change it to 320*240. lsmod shows that vga16fb is used.
06:54
when i commented everything except LDM_DIRECTX=TRUE, ive got a list of resolutions from 320*240 to 1024*768, lsmod on client terminal (non client machine) shows that driver vga16fb is used.
06:57
<trubbor>
mealstrom: I'm not an LTSP expert (yet)...just wanted to get a response to you. What happens if you only add X_MODE_0 = 1280x1024?
06:58
mealstrom: so you would only have LDM_DIRECTX = TRUE and X_MODE_0 = 1280x1024
06:59
<alkisg>
mealstrom: also load the nvidia module from lts.conf, e.g. MODULE_01=nvidia and maybe X4_MODULE_01=glx too
06:59
<trubbor>
mealstrom: what monitor do you have attached to the thin client?
06:59
<alkisg>
Don't set configure_x, disable_xrandr etc
07:00
<mealstrom>
trubbor: im trying with different options. If ldm_directx=true and xserver=nvidia == ive got 2 resoluitions on client 320*240 and 640*480
07:00
<alkisg>
[Default]
07:00
XSERVER=nvidia
07:00
MODULE_01=nvidia
07:00
X4_MODULE_01=glx
07:00
LDM_DIRECTX=True
07:00
Try with only those
07:01
Are you sure you installed the nvidia drivers in the chroot correctly, and were the nvidia modules compiled successfully with dkms?
07:01
Because if they weren't (which is something difficult to get right the first time), then there's no point in trying lts.conf settings
07:01
<mealstrom>
it was completed with no errors. ill try yours config now
07:04
alkisg: no luck with yours config
07:04
ill try to reinstall nvidia drivers
07:05
<alkisg>
mealstrom: wait
07:05
<mealstrom>
waiting
07:05
<alkisg>
With that same config, get a local client shell
07:05
Run: lspci -nn -k | grep -A 2 VGA
07:05
We're interested in "kernel modules" and "driver in use" there
07:06
<mealstrom>
local client shel -> ctrl+alt+f1? or a terminal from gnome-session of logged in user?
07:06
<alkisg>
If you have a ctrl+alt+f1/f2 shell, that would do, or ssh, or...
07:06
!localxterm
07:06
<ltsp>
alkisg: localxterm: Any applications that you launch on a thin client actually run on the server. However, if in a client you run 'ltsp-localapps xterm', a local xterm will open, and any commands that you enter there will be executed locally on the client.
07:10
<trubbor>
alkig: Are you familiar with Nettop setups as Thin Clients? I'm using Foxconn NT425's. I think they have Intel GMA3150 graphics processors. For some reason - LTSP sees it as having two monitors connected.

07:13
<alkisg>
trubbor: we don't have thin client hardware in schools here, we reuse ancient desktops instead
07:13
But there was indeed a problem with the intel driver falsly detecting multiple monitors, Hyperbyte might have the solution handy...

(10:06:10 πμ) mealstrom: local client shel -> ctrl+alt+f1? or a terminal from gnome-session of logged in user?
07:17

Kernel modules: nvidia-173, nouveau, nvidiafb, in use: nvidia-173. Videocard nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] [10de:0322] (rev a1)
07:17
there is answer
07:18
<alkisg>
mealstrom: so when you say "no luck" what do you mean? nvidia-173 appears to be loaded...
07:18
mealstrom: in that localxterm, try: glxinfo, xrandr etc, and paste them to pastebin
07:19
Also if you think there are problems, paste /var/log/Xorg.0.log (from the localxterm again)
07:19
<mealstrom>
local module is loaded but i cant set resolution to 1280*1024 on client when it logins.
07:19
and dont know how to do this with lts.conf.
07:20
<alkisg>
Leave that part for later
07:20
<mealstrom>
ok
07:20
<alkisg>
Let's see first if you indeed have nvidia up and running with hardware acceleration etc
07:20
What's the output of xrandr, and of glxinfo, and also paste xorg.0.log
07:21
You can join this channel from your client too, if you want to be able to copy/paste more easily
07:22
Btw, I hope you wanted the nvidia drivers for the hardware acceleration part, otherwise it would be very easy to get the resolution you wanted with the default nouveau driver...
07:23
<mealstrom>
alkisg: yes. for acceleration. ill try to do this.

I installed ltsp with Ubuntu 12.04, I have to connect to Active directory, so I installed pbis (Likewise-open's replacement), I am connected to the AD domain, I can run the commands from command line to verify AD (find-user, find-dc, etc) and can ssh into the ltsp server with my AD credentials. BUT.. on the server I can not get login as an AD user, there is no option for it, I see the user that I created when installing Ubuntu, and guest session. There is no op
13:21
<alkisg>
bieb: your message was too long and IRC cut it in "There is no op"
13:21
Also, if you can't login to the ltsp server with your AD credentials, then that's not related to LTSP at all, and you should be asking in either your distro channel or in some likewise mailing list
13:22
<bieb>
There is no option for domain\username to login..
13:22
<alkisg>
In lightdm? Yeah, not ltsp related at all, so better use other channels
13:22
<bieb>
I am asking in Ubuntu also.. just figured someone here may have seen this
13:22
<alkisg>
I think there's an option for "other user" there
13:22
Maybe you can type the domain in that box
13:23
You could also probably ask in launchpad, in the lightdm "answers" page
13:24
<bieb>
when I am at the login screen.. only have the user I created during install and guest session.. Guest session auto logs in
13:26

!learn cups as With thin clients running on a Ubuntu 12.04 server, you may run into CUPS limiting the amount of simultaneous connections from one host. Since all connections originate from the same host (the server), you'll have to raise MaxClients and MaxClientsPerHost. See: http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/ref-cupsd-conf.html
14:47
