julienfayad: hello, do you need to open an SSH connection to a running LTSP client from outside your office ?

09:38
<jgomila>
hi again
09:39
i have a doubt about ltsp and openstack
09:39
<vagrantc>
doubts are healthy
09:40
<jgomila>
I have 5 offices with about 30 computers
09:41
I wish to migrate to opensource software, and I am thinking in a terminal server thin client
09:41
but I have seen the openstack project, its similar to ltsp ?
09:42
<vagrantc>
entirely different things
09:42
openstack is a system of virtualized computers
09:42
ltsp is about network booting (usually physical) computers
09:43
openstack might be most useful in a datacenter ... ltsp might be most useful in a clasroom or office setting
09:44
<jgomila>
then I need to search more info about ltsp implementation than openstack
09:44
<vagrantc>
that said, you might be able to use openstack to run your LTSP server ... but using more simple virtualization would proably be a better starting point
09:45
basically, ltsp allows you to manage arbitrary numbers of desktop computers as if they were one computer
09:45
<jgomila>
openstack should be useful if I wish install ltsp server in each office to reduce the latency loading the image from ltsp ¿no?
09:45
<vagrantc>
i don't see why openstack in particular would be useful
09:46
virtualization is generally useful ... but openstack is one of the more complicated virtualization implementations
09:46
<jgomila>
i am very new in this area, always worked with standalone computers
09:47
the ideal for our implementation should be ltsp servers in each office sharing data between them
09:47
and allow user mobility between offices
09:48
<vagrantc>
ah, the offices aren't on the same local network?
09:48
<jgomila>
i believe, I am not sure if its realiy needed
09:48
all the offices are connected via a private network over internet with cisco routers
09:49
300mbps on the main office, but less in the other offices, both of them only adsl 10mbps
09:49
both = two
09:49* vagrantc nods
09:50
<vagrantc>
yeah, probably want a server at each site ... syncing the homedirs between sites will take some custom work
09:51
nothign out of the box to support that
09:51
<jgomila>
i know
09:54
the local computer can have a prebuild environment ? to reduce bandwith required ?
09:55
I have a computer in a housing in or private network, that all the offices can reach
09:55
<vagrantc>
i think alkisg implemented some support for syncing images from the server for semi-disconnected operation
09:55
but that wouldn't work well for dynamic data
09:57
basically, the LTSP image is a read-only image, that then mounts a writeable layer in tmpfs which disappears at reboot
09:57
you can also mount some network filesystems to be able to write and keep files between reboots
09:57
by default, it's done on the server by mounting the user's homedir over sshfs from the server
09:58
the local traffic is pretty minimal, if using fat clients
09:59
thin clients are an option, but with hardware in this day and age, tends to be suboptimal
10:03
<jgomila>
I will continue investigating
10:04
thanks for your help
10:04
<vagrantc>
good luck

Hello world!
22:46
I want to ask for a bit of help. I have been trying to set up an LTSP vm on my server and then launch a thin client from vbox in windows.
22:48
I can get a PXE boot set up and get a login prompt, however it is not for the user I created in the chroot, it's for the server it's self. In short, LTSP doesn't seem to be using the chroot.
22:49
I am running the LTSP install from Ubuntu server 16.04 with lubuntu-core installed via tasksel.
