Hello
14:58
<mgariepy>
"UseDns no" just remove the dns reverse lookup on the sercer when a client connect to it.
14:59
this way ssh can open the session before the dns timeout is reached.
15:00
<rwmarch>
So, no unintended effect for me to worry about?
15:00
<mgariepy>
i wouldn't think so.
15:02
<rwmarch>
That system is Ubuntu 10.04.3LTS. I have a Ubuntu 10.10 system that does NOT exhibit this issue and it does not have UseDNS no set.

I have some work to do pertaining to that. Apparently once it's been checked, I need to send it on to the intel-gfx list
15:16
and since it has been "reviewed-by" someone, it's good to go
15:16
so it's up to me to complete the process

_UsUrPeR_, so you need to find the commit of your patch then add this to the bug ?
15:22
so it can be cherry-picked ?
15:22
<_UsUrPeR_>
I have to review what this individual has told me to do, but it looks like the command "git send-email" will help with the submission.
15:23
but since it has been reviewed, I can change the linux bug status to "reviewed by"
15:28

stgraber: for Precise, which kernel do we install by default when we create/update the chroot?
18:24
stgraber: I'm asking because, as of today, 'linux' and 'linux-image' pull the -pae kernel by default and yet PAE support is non-existent on the Geode.
18:27
stgraber: we'd therefore need to pull linux-image-generic to ensure support for non-PAE hardware.
18:34
<vagrantc>
Q-FUNK: the sources say it pulls in linux-image-generic on i386
18:35
<Q-FUNK>
vagrantc: excellent. thanks for the answer! :)
18:36
<vagrantc>
since 2006
18:36
<Q-FUNK>
ok. noted.
18:36
<vagrantc>
"since ages"
18:36
<Q-FUNK>
seems so :)
18:37
<vagrantc>
so even if you're upgrading, it shouldn't be much of a problem
18:38
<Q-FUNK>
I just had to check, because since a few releases, Ubuntu has been trying to phase out support for older hardware, so I must decide whether keeping an eye on Ubuntu is feasible anymore.
18:39
it started with building everything with -m686, now they also ship a -pae kernel by default and there were even talks of discontinuing support for pre-pae hardware.
18:39
<vagrantc>
yeah, many distros have gone that way...
18:40
<Q-FUNK>
for now, they still ship a kernel with non-pae support, but it's only a matter of time before that, too, gets discontinued.
18:41
<vagrantc>
debian stopped shipping a non-pae 686 single-proc kernel, but still ships a -486 single-proc kernel
18:41
<Q-FUNK>
already the day they started using -m686 saw schools with plenty of GX1 and GX2 terminals switch to Debian.
18:41
yup. 486 is what I use with Geode on Debian.
18:42
<vagrantc>
486 is still the default on debian, since it's the most compatible ... if people want/need more, they can add it
18:42
default for debian's LTSP, that is
18:42
<Q-FUNK>
ok
18:42
<vagrantc>
i pondered briefly defaulting to 686, but there was a minor revolt
18:42
<Q-FUNK>
plus, d-i on debian tends to be good at detecting the right kernel to install.
18:42
"minor" ?
18:43
<vagrantc>
a few complaints well placed convinced me otherwise
18:43
<Q-FUNK>
the day you do this is the day LTSP essentiall ceased to be usable on GX1, SC and GX2 hardware.

18:43
<vagrantc>
and i've also run into a lot of non-686 thin client hardware coming through freegeek lately... and with the dropping of 686-non-pae it's pretty much settled
18:44
no, it'll take a full release cycle before it hits :P
18:44
<Q-FUNK>
yeah, most thin client hardware on x86 uses some souped-up customized 586 core.
18:44
<vagrantc>
though i have no intentions of making that switch :)
18:45
i'll default to the most compatible kernel debian ships by default.
18:46
<Q-FUNK>
sounds like a plan. besides, doing that guarantees that debian remains a viable upgrade path, the day Ubuntu puts the final nail in the coffin and stops shipping non-pae kernels.
18:47
in a way, it will eventually make Debian the only usable distro for LTSP.
18:47
and maybe Gentoo
18:48
<vagrantc>
there are plenty of people using more modern hardware with thin or fat clients, but yes, for the lower end stuff, debian seems to be it...
18:48shogunx has left IRC (shogunx!~shogunx@rrcs-67-79-182-232.se.biz.rr.com, Remote host closed the connection)
18:48
<Q-FUNK>
but it's fairly clear that Fedora and Ubuntu will eventually drop most thin client hardware as an indirect result of further tightening their optimizations.
18:49
more modern? what would it be, asides from de-disked gutted PC hardware?
18:50
nobody has come up with dedicated thin client hardware that uses anything more recent than the Geode LX, afaik.
18:50
<leio>
probably people who understand why thin client setups are useful, as opposed to just for the prices
18:51
also, VIA Nano U3500 seems popular apparently. Has even SSE4.1
18:52
<vagrantc>
Q-FUNK: i've seen numerous atom thin clients
18:52
<Q-FUNK>
leio: such as this? http://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/product/25202/ddtsc
18:53

18:55

Hey, quick question. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTSP and after a user types in a username, if they either don't type a password or type a bad password once, it stays on the password prompt indefinitely. If the user tries a bad password a 2nd time, it reverts back to asking for the username. Any way to set a timeout on this? I've got kiosks using LTSP, and I'm finidng some kiosks where ppl have left it on a password prompt, which seems to confuse some

users.
