Good Morning.
02:15
I update software on the server and client (Ubuntu Lucid) and now I get *No response from server. Restarting* I have tried sudo ltsp-update-sshkeys followed by sudo ltsp-update-image
02:16
I rebooted the clients and I have the same error. Any ideas on what to check next?

Yes
02:20
See if you get any ssh warnings before connecting, and if you're able to connect or not

Then, it's not a problem with ltsp, it's an ssh problem. Check if your ssh server is running, and that you don't have any firewall problems.
02:24
<frederickjh>
ok
02:25
I think the ssh server is not running as ps -C sshd returns no processes
02:26
<alkisg>
sudo status ssh
02:26
sudo start ssh
02:26
etc...
02:26
<frederickjh>
ok
02:30
ok now it puts up a message that it is checking the password but then I get the same message.
02:30
Going to screen_02 and trying it does not recognize the ssh key.
02:30
Do I need to regenerate the ssh keys?

I already did and rebooted the client. Logged in. Success. THanks for your help!

I unitnstalled ltsp-server-standalone to get rid of dhcp3 since i am using dnsmasq instead. This was obviously a mistake as my clients will not boot, I have ltsp-server installed and the client built, what am I missing?

<litercola>
hey alkisg, can you help me some more?
09:51
<alkisg>
Hi litercola
09:52
<litercola>
I think I screwed up, I tried to remove dhcp3-server as I am using dnsmasq instead, I had to remove ltsp-server-standalone to do so, I still have ltsp-server installed, and clients built, but clients won'e boot, am I missing something?
09:53andrew_ubuntu has joined #ltsp

09:53
<alkisg>
litercola: first of all, run "sudo apt-get install ltsp-server", so that it's marked as manually installed.
09:53
Otherwise it might be autoremoved
09:54
<litercola>
it was, and i re installed it
09:54
<alkisg>
OK
09:54
Next, how far do your clients boot?
09:54
<litercola>
it seems that they are waiting for the tftp server...
09:56
I was also going to ask if it made sense to use dnsmasq tftp server instead since I'm already using it for dns and dhcp
09:58
<alkisg>
tftpd-hpa is going to need to be installed because of dependencies, so I use that, even though I use dnsmasq too
09:59
to troubleshoot the tftp server, run the following commands, and paste the output to pastebin:
09:59
status tftpd-hpa
09:59
grep tftp /etc/inetd.conf
10:00
ls -l /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0
10:00
cat /etc/default/tftpd-hpa
10:00
grep pxelinux /etc/dnsmasq.conf (if you modified that)

10:04
sorry, I'm a little slow
10:05
<alkisg>
dhcp-boot=net:warehouse,pxelinux.0,ppro,10.10.10.12 ==> that doesn't look right
10:06
Do you have a /var/lib/tftpboot/pxelinux.0 file?
10:06
<litercola>
that redirects a couple warehouse thin clients to another server for an imaage
10:07
no, just a directory for ltsp
10:08mistik1 has quit IRC
10:08
<alkisg>
Ah, that's not the server IP. OK then.
10:09
All looks ok, are you getting permission denied on the clients?
10:10
<litercola>
It doesn't seem so, they get the ip information and then seem to wait for the boot file.
10:11
Just curious in case I ever need to reinstall and start over, If I would have manually installed ltsp-server before removing ltsp-server-standalone, all of this would have continued to work in theory right
10:12mistik1 has joined #ltsp
10:12
<alkisg>
Wait, so it worked before, and it broke when you removed ltsp-server-standalone?
10:12
This doesn't make sense, unless you have not configured dnsmasq for pxe boot
10:12
<litercola>
correct, it was working like a charm
10:12
<alkisg>
So, were you using dhcp3-server before, when it was working?
10:13
<litercola>
dnsmasq is configured exactly the same as before, and no it was working with dnsmasq
10:13
not dhcp3
10:13
<alkisg>
Well, it doesn't make sense at all
10:13
I'd advice you to boot a client with gpxe to see which dhcp options it actually gets
10:13
!gpxe
10:13
<ltspbot>
alkisg: "gpxe" :: the successor to etherboot (http://etherboot.org). To download bootable floppy, cd, usb, kernel etc images, visit http://rom-o-matic.net/
10:14
<litercola>
cool, I will give it a try, will you be around later?
10:14
<alkisg>
In case of reinstallation, you only need to install ltsp-server in the beginning, not ltsp-server-standalone
10:14
If you use the alternate cd, then to properly remove ltsp-server-standalone, you do this:
10:14
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ProxyDHCP#Installing%20dnsmasq
10:14
(just this paragraph about installation, not the whole page)
10:15
I'll be around for 1 hour, and then after 4 hours.
10:15
<litercola>
gotcha, I guess when in uninstalled ltsp-server, something broke. I read that article but obviously didn't pay attention.
10:16
<alkisg>
"""Mark ltsp-server as manually installed, so that it doesn't get purged along with ltsp-server-standalone:
10:16
sudo apt-get install ltsp-server # This may update ltsp-server instead
10:16
sudo apt-get install ltsp-server # So do it twice to be certain"""
10:16
^^That part, mainly
10:16
<litercola>
Thank you for the help again, but like you said yesterday, I am better off using the alternate cd instead of a real server install correct?
10:16staffencasa has joined #ltsp
10:16
<alkisg>
Yes, so either the alternate cd, or the desktop cd
10:16
(the alternate's fine)
10:17

cool, thank you again, I will play with it, and look for you later if I have any problems

Hi everyone! Got a problem with LTSP on Ubuntu 9.10. I just setup a new server that is hosting 6 users. In the morning, they are getting a solid blue screen after login. It will sit at these blue screens for like 10-15mins before they can see their desktop. Any idea what might be causing this?

the weird thing, is that it isn't consistent.... some ppl yesterday had the problem, but those same ppl didn't have the problem today, but the ones that were ok yesterday had the blue screen. I suspect network lag, but once they are in everything seems ok and they say it's not choppy or anything.

12:38
<Kyle__>
abeehc-_: That's for passing out the root image via NFS, not what I need/want. I awnt to use NFS for the user's /home, instead of sshfs.
12:38

fat clients nfs home
12:39
that's what you want to look for
12:39
look at the code
12:39
not google
12:39
if you're not using the fat client script
12:39
<Kyle__>
Ahh ha!
12:39
I am. Sweet.
12:39
<johnny>
pretty sure alkisg added a switch, but maybe your version is too old to have it
12:39
or maybe it's a new lts.conf var
12:39
you'll have to ask him
12:40
<Kyle__>
Honestly, I think NFS is preferable to sshfs in _all_ situations not requiring high-security.
12:40
johnny: One of the things that bugs the hell out of me is that the ubuntu 10 ltsp package doesn't come with man pages :(
12:40
:| rather, as in GRRR.
12:41
<johnny>
i'm suprised
12:42
<Kyle__>
Maybe my installs are funkified.
12:42* Kyle__ shrugs
12:42
<Kyle__>
But man lts.conf gives me nothing.
12:43
And I see lots of pages reference that.
12:45
<abeehc-_>
you might check this /usr/share/doc/ltsp-server/lts-parameters.txt
12:45
<johnny>
yes
12:46
but really the source is the best place
12:46
<Kyle__>
The lts-parameters.txt file is no longer maintained.
12:46
Please see the lts.conf(5) man page, available in the
12:46
<johnny>
if you're looking for anyting tnot there

12:46
Oops, didn't mean to paste all three lines.
12:46* Kyle__ goes to get the source
12:48
<johnny>
and you can't install it? :)
12:48
ltsp-docs i mean
12:49
i guess i've never used the man pages to realize whether they are there or not
12:50
<Kyle__>
johnny: I guess I'm not used to having docs seperated out like that. there _is_ an ltsp-docs package.
12:50* Kyle__ is getting that now.
12:51

yeah, it should be installed by default probably
