some here having experience in running icewm with ltsp?
trying to strip down the icewm menu completely
icewm with nautilus on top in the high school
just edit /usr/locala/share/icewm/menu
so that my clients only will have firefox and gaim as options in the menu + logout
but have only one entry in the menu file at the moment (firefox)
i just add buttons to toolbar
but it still shows 'Programs' 'Thems' etc
cant comment them out?
hmm..i guess i nees sto look
little bit confused in that area, since the entries are not in the menu file..
do I have to override some settings?
guess i might be too 8~)
i dont know if preferences file has anything.
have seen some other people that done it, looks really nice and clean
tried to look at it, but couldn't find it
perb: http://pastebin.com/876597 my menu
but the empty menus still there
it's only a visual problem...

What's up, kids.
I'm about to stab this old printer. It's not printing dark enough, and CUPS doesn't seem to care what I set the thing to.
"it was working fine under Windows" - I don't want to have that talk again with my tech support manager haha.
|10:26||efra has joined #ltsp|
Hi everyone. Need help with client sound (and local USB would be nice, but secondary). I have Kubuntu 6.10 LTSP running and cannot get sound to redirect from server to clients (edited /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf to add sound=true and sound_deamon=esd, as well as localdev = true in default section).
dan__t: you can always get the "Vista" doll ...comes completwe with pins and matches
I could also hand out chisels and blocks of granite, but I'd rather not.
The printer has nothing to do with LTSP, LTSP works very very well.
I just needed to bitch and moan.
dan_t: I had the same problem (bar codes weren't printing dark enough from laser printer), go to system settings, printers, select your printer, configure, and change "toner saving" to off (which was my problem), or try the other settings for quality, toner density, etc.
Yes, toner density is at 5, the max. Going to double check toner saving now, however, I'm almost certain I set that to off.
er, i have no toner saver option.
wtf is REt setting
printing I had under toner saving was 1 pixel dark outlines with light grey in-shading. Is that what yours looks like or just all grey?
not sure on REt..
It's all just not there. Any text that might have a blue background, is almost completely faded.
The toner could still be replaced, but even so, we get back to the "but windows didn't do this" lameness.
I should see SOME darkness.
was this recent or a newly installed driver? Maybe create another printer configuration pointing to the same device and install a different driver option. Almost the windows reboot trick..
hpjis is what its using now, iirc....
Ive got a HP1100 laserjet and driver is "foomatic/ljet4 (recommended)"
THat's what I'm trying now.
|10:43||bricode has joined #ltsp|
Ok, went with a new driver.
I didn't even think of that, thank you.
Sure. I'll guess you can now turn on/off "toner saving" too... just remember where the toggle switch is and you'll be ok : )

Could I be missing sound and local dev support from manually apt-get installing "ltsp-server-standalone opensh-server" and then "ltsp-build-client" vs ltsp server install on the alternate kubuntu 6.10 disk? If so then how can I update?
ltsp-build-client --extra-mirror=http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty universe
is that right syntax?
I'll try that and see what it says..
don't try my command....heheh...I'm trying to get help

not as impressive as

someone reported success with them..and managed to extricate bios pw from the makers
Oh you did? Cool
Mine didn't come locked so I am OK there
couple weeks ago..lemme see if i have it
My problem is that I want it to boot off of a CF flash card that's connected through an IDE adapter ... but the neoware doesn't seem to be willing to do that. It's weird.
I tried all the PIO modes as well, no luck
yeas..article was from roy souther 1/03/07
the approach I'm taking now is to try to get the Disk-on-Chip loaded with grub only, we'll see where that goes.
Can't say I'm especially hopeful at this point.

g333k_work: maybe I can (but only maybe)
Envite, I have done almost all steps of troubleshooting, all passed well, but in step 11 i cannot execute this line as a ws001 user, just as root, and it creates the Temp drive in the Desktop but empy
|16:59||Gadi has joined #ltsp|
g333k_work: which wiki document are you following ?
hey, g333k_work - I just popped in for a bit, while some stuff compiles
hows ur rebooting?
Gadi, working very well
Gadi, thanks for the help
g333k_work: which line? first one with lbus?
does it work when NFS dies?
Gadi, the think is that I want it to work for more purposes.... like that my client call myshutdown when I disconnect its server from the net ie.
Gadi, when I disconnect the server network cable my client just dies
Envite, /usr/sbin/lbus_event_handler.sh add block /tmp 1024 Temp
g333k_work: even with a daemon running in memory?
or did you not get that far?
g333k_work: for your testing, I would just boot a client to a "shell" and pull the network line and see what you can make happen on the scren
Gadi, tell me more about the daemon that you were talking about last time... the nfs watcher
Envite, no clues?
g333k_work: I think that it is correct that only root can do that
it is the second part of the problem which troubles me
Envite, well so why is it mounting my devices empty?
I have passed almost all steps, local devices should be working well in my system
the Temp icon appears, isn't it?
g333k_work: well, to test it, I would just boot a thin client to a shell and run somethings like:
while :; do echo "Checking NFS..."; cp /etc/lts.conf /dev/null 2>/dev/null; [ "$?" != 0 ] && myshutdown -r; sleep 5; done
Envite, but empty, when I connect my usb key it appears but also empty
then pull the network cable on the thin client and see if you still get output to screen and reboots
if it appears by itself means that lbus is working ok
Gadi, to call myshutdown in this script it should be localted in /usr/bin right=
|17:15||bobby_C has quit IRC|
you should copy myshutdown to /tmp
and execute it as: /tmp/myshutdown
g333k_work: what appears when you exec "mount" ?
Envite, many lines
any line about ltspfs ?
Envite, spanish speaker?
Gadi, ok let me try that and I'll tell you the results
ok, so the problem is with the mount, not the lbus firing
Envite, me too :p
Envite, I think we could understand each other better in spanish :p
g333k_work: yes, i was thinking the same, if nobody complains
g333k_work: ejecuta ' lsmod | grep fuse ' en el servidor
Envite, ok esperame un momento porque apague el servidor un momento

Envite, ok ahora si
Envite, root@ltsp-desktop:~# lsmod | grep fuse

well..i used macintosh 5260 nubus machines as chuby clients..that was an experience...tohught id even do a beowulf cluster and get the processing power of your average laptop..
right now I am using amd AthelonM with 1GB ram. SIS chip set (cheapy pcchips mobo).
biggest problem I had was rebuilding the iniramfs to include the sis190 driver.
the fat client with 17" LCD is costing me less than $300 US
I added 2 100GB sata3 using md raid 0 for the "server" (just NFS/DHCP) and added a 1Gb copper eth
Just feel like I am missing something that will bite me later
jodell:sounds like a pretty good setup..
how many users?
4 stations at this point.
I figure I can scale to 10 before I need to start using ram disks for some of the os.
might want to bump you ram..if serving more than that with firefox/oo
That was what I was thinking.
figure 256 for the server and maybe 80 meg per client for a working number
Woudl i need to bump ram on teh client, not the server?
X and all apps are on the client.
no..some of mine are still 32 meg..64 is like a rock..
all apps on client isee
I know not the real idea of ltsp.
on ltsp-4.2..ubuntu ltsp5 reqiuirres more ram
I jsut found that I could build think clients for small installs (<20) cheaper than a server that I was comfortable with.
ltsp..all apps can run on server..update server..all clients get the update
i use all junk
I am deb using ltsp5 (at least that is what I think the deb packages are)
donations from the bank..whatever
who are you building for?
100 clients for maybe 200 dollars plus labor
12 schools ..downeast maine
build a prommed card for 10 bucks..pop it in a tired machine..new life
sound like the kind of stuff that I used to dream of.
rebuild an old card for a buck 50
you work for the school?
just now started using pxe boot
makes it much harder.
PXE is the bomb.
bioses were too old to support it
Only thing I don't like is the extra tftp calls to get to the default boot
but etherboot will do alternate dhcp..flies under the radar of existing dhcp
boot times are like 35 seconds with 4.2
on a p1 133
with 64 meg ram
I clocked < 22 to a full KDE desktop using autologin using the thicks i built.
I am thinking of moving to linusBios and flash to get the "instant on" feel
Updates are a constant PITA.
most of my time is in post
I hate bleeding on the OS edge.
im still learning as well...we use icewm with nautilus on top..saves some time
I lose more time in dhpc
I was thinking of that or tw.
Client wanted a more "apple" feel.
icewm is so eeasy to offer the programs you want
this first setup is going into a daycare for running old dos games.
I'll have to look into ice
you independent then?
can make ends meet?
trying to be. I am a *nix/net admin for Xerox.
There is a model that will support independence.
getting started is the hard part.
i'll do it when i retire..im getting up there
been building a clientele around the day job
That is what I am doing.
do you have a business model in mind?
in the city?
no not really
ive been in business since 81..b oatbuilder etc
til i sold out in 2003
ran a ferry business
i need to pack it in for thenight..be around tomorrow...
Nice talking to you. See you around
