gvy, yes not normally this quiet
05:05
<gvy>
MrMoo, btw tnx for couple added hints on freenx
05:05
<krinns>
hey
05:05
i am getting strange things in ltsp
05:05
i have ubuntu dapper
05:05
with ltsp 4.2
05:06
<gvy>
prolly you want something fresher with 5...
05:06
<krinns>
some of my users gets hand for 2 -3 minutes and then resume
05:06
well i cant change over night
05:06
<gvy>
4.2 has had its fair share of idiosynrcacy in scripts...
05:06
krinns, i'd first look into basic networking with that
05:07
<krinns>
well
05:07
honestly
05:07
<gvy>
if there's no significant package drop in "ifconfig" run locally,
05:07
<krinns>
i ahve 40 windows users n 40 thin clients
05:07
<gvy>
then i'd continue to i/o spikes (collectd installed and running largely helps to find those)
05:07
<krinns>
my voip set is connected to I/O ports and then pc is connected to VOIP sets
05:07plamengr has joined #ltsp
05:07plamengr has left #ltsp
05:08
<krinns>
even thinclient hangs voip works cools
05:08
<gvy>
+check the swap, is it used or not...
05:08
<krinns>
so i cant be networking issue then
05:08
<gvy>
ah
05:08
then free ram/io?
05:08
<krinns>
how i check
05:08
<gvy>
free
05:08
w
05:08
free wil tell memory/swap stats
05:09
w will tell load average (that is, how much processes are waiting for disk i/o on average for 1/5/15 min)
05:09
<krinns>
total used free shared buffers cached
05:09
Mem: 3108640 2727180 381460 0 332112 644384
05:09
-/+ buffers/cache: 1750684 1357956
05:09
Swap: 7815544 5316 7810228
05:09
<gvy>
or cat /proc/loadavg
05:09
swap is ok
05:09
<krinns>
how i check how much users are connected
05:09
<gvy>
w :-)
05:09
it's short of "who"
05:09
<krinns>
cat /proc/loadavg
05:10
well who cant tel me correctly as wht i think
05:10
it shows only 2 usres
05:11
<gvy>
on ts?

krinns, you can have ltsp 4.2 and dapper's muekow (ltsp 5.0) side by side
05:17
<krinns>
no
05:17
i cant
05:17
i have to change then
05:18
n i cant not afford change mean while
05:18
i wan to streamline things
05:18
<MrMoo>
I mix LTSP 4.2, Edgy and Feisty clients with a Ubuntu Feisty server

<MrMoo>
no login window or no valid login?
05:33
<krinns>
hum
05:33
hey
05:33
i want admin user to run gnome-cups-manager as root
05:33
so i add it in sudoers file
05:33
<MrMoo>
gksudo gnome-cups-manager
05:33
<krinns>
but it seems not workin
05:34
<MrMoo>
edit sudoers with visudo
05:34
<krinns>
admin ALL=(ALL) /usr/bin/gnome-cups-manager,/usr/bin/gnome-cups-add
05:34
i did that
05:34
in suders file
05:35
<MrMoo>
sudoers is really odd you have to then run /usr/sbin/gnome-cups-manager
05:35
it doesn't translate paths
05:35
<krinns>
when i ssh -x admin@remotemachine
05:35
Last login: Tue Jul 10 15:28:22 2007 from 10.8.0.1
05:35
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
05:35
See "man sudo_root" for details.
05:35
what this mean
05:35
<MrMoo>
gnome-cups-manager != /usr/bin/gnome-cups-manager
05:35
rather annoying
05:36
<krinns>
what u mean
05:36
?
05:36
<MrMoo>
sudo doesn't resolve the program location
05:36
<krinns>
true
05:36
<MrMoo>
sudo gnome-cups-manager is different to /usr/bin/gnome-cups-manager
05:36
<krinns>
thats why i addadmin ALL=(ALL) /usr/bin/gnome-cups-manager,/usr/bin/gnome-cups-add
05:36
<MrMoo>
sudo /usr/bin/gnome-cups-manager
05:36
<krinns>
ok
05:37
<MrMoo>
then you have to run "sudo /usr/bin/gnome-cups-manager"
05:38
I had a similar problem with sudo before
05:38
<daya>
ogra, hi
05:40
<paras>
where can i see the log in my client.. i am not getting login screen.
05:40
<MrMoo>
so an X11 problem
05:40
try forcing driver and resolution in lts.conf
05:41
or, add a shell, set a root password in the chroot, and check the Xorg log file for errors
05:41
<ogra>
MrMoo, why with a bit of work ? gutsy should work out of the box atm ...
05:41
(at least i'm not aware i broke it :) )
05:41
<MrMoo>
gutsy client against feisty server
05:41
<ogra>
hey daya
05:42
<daya>
there is not lts.conf file, by default
05:42
<MrMoo>
for the squashfs network block device
05:42
<ogra>
oh, right, feisty server will have probs since it uses an old nbd-server
05:42
the gutsy version uses different options
05:42
daya, in ltsp5 ? thats right ... you dont need one
05:42
<paras>
MrMoo, where does the lts.conf resides? /etc/lts or /etc
05:43
<MrMoo>
you can also force NFS with root=/dev/nfs and skip the initrd routines
05:43
<daya>
ogra, do now ltsp support sound in Debian etch,
05:43
<MrMoo>
paras, /opt/ltsp/i386/etc usually
05:43
<paras>
MrMoo, ok .. i am using 5 . there is none
05:43
<daya>
ogra, we are trying to install ltsp , but the client is unable to start GUI, what might be the error,
05:43
<ogra>
daya, it should work, yes (even though i dont test debian ... i havent heard any different)
05:44
<daya>
ogra, we are dropped to shell in client instead of GUI login prompt,
05:44
<paras>
MrMoo, i checked xorg.log .. it is saying no screen found
05:45
<MrMoo>
paras, it cannot detect the video chipset it would appear

if you have a shell run dmesg and scroll through the text to check for a video chipset name :O
05:46
or open up the box and have a look
05:47
<paras>
ogra, installed from http://wiki.debian.org/LTSP/Howto?highlight=%28ltsp%29
05:47
<ogra>
if you only used the top howto that should work out of the box ...
05:48
i have no idea about the backported stuff at the bottom
05:48
(i dont touch debian, you need to wait for vagrantc)
05:48
<MrMoo>
a popular problem is incorrect detection of 17" LCD monitors with 1280x1024 resolution
05:48
<paras>
ogra, ok.. we have used it since the top how to doesnot work with sound...
05:49
<ogra>
afaik the version in etch is based on the same code as ubuntu edgy ...
05:49
in edgy sound works out of the box, weird that you didnt get it working on debian
05:50
but really, vagrant ports the ubuntu stuff over to debian so he's your man

(he might be travelling today though)

05:51
<paras>
MrMoo, displasy chip is i1810
05:52
<MrMoo>
oh, yup that's an unlucky chip
05:52
you sometimes have to force the video ramsize as it can be shared with system memory
05:53
<paras>
MrMoo, ok in which file?
05:54
<ltsppbot>
"MrMoo" pasted "/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf for i810" (3 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/210
05:55
<MrMoo>
as an example, adjust for whatever memory you have setup
05:55
<ogra>
is that on debian ?
05:55
mm
05:55
i thought they use the same i810 drive as ubuntu does ...
05:55
<MrMoo>
I'm hoping its the same \:D/
05:56
<ogra>
at least in feisty my 810 and 910 systems wrk out of the box here ... weird that you have to force the driver in debian
05:56
<MrMoo>
depends on the box, there are a lot of variations
05:56
<ogra>
(in gutsy even with compiz out of the box ;) )
05:57
<MrMoo>
although Intel is usually quite good, strange :/
06:00daya has quit IRC
06:00
<MrMoo>
gutsy has an "intel" driver too
06:03
<ogra>
right
06:03
that prevents you from having to use 915resolution ... which the old i810 driver needs to the the rsolution right

Is there any nice way to automagically clean up broken user environments?
06:20
The two popular issues so far have been Firefox & Thunderbirds wonderful .parentlock files
06:21
Then nautilius and many children hanging about after a crash
06:21
<gvy>
MrMoo, re "sudo doesn't resolve the program location": it's broken sudo build w/o hardwired PATH
06:21
in altlinux, sudo is also build properly. :)
06:22
ah, re sudoers -- there one should put full paths nevertheless
06:22
if anything, for certainity
06:22
<MrMoo>
I use it for an automated tested setup, root for raw socket access.
06:23
<gvy>
MrMoo, video chipset is not exactly likely to reveal in `dmesg`
06:24
<MrMoo>
Thunderbird with one email with ~15MB of photos kills all my thin clients :(
06:24
<gvy>
lspci or cat /proc/pci and resolve by hand via some local pci.ids...
06:24
MrMoo, add some swap, no?
06:24
we had similar trouble with firefox and w/o (or with not enough) swap...
06:25
it was remedied to some extent by using openbsd malloc but not the magic dust of course
06:25
ff would blow X server full of cra... images, that is
06:26
<MrMoo>
yup,

<MrMoo>
how easy would it be to setup sshfs and a ultra-simple exec-only ltsprshd to implement basic LocalApps
07:15
<ogra>
MrMoo, trivial depending on yur skills :)
07:16
<MrMoo>
scim-tomoe is running too slow on the server
07:16
<ogra>
you need to install all bits for sshfs in the chroot ...
07:16
<MrMoo>
should be lighter than nfs?
07:17
<ogra>
for feisty you then would need to add a line that mounts the home dir to ldm ...
07:17
in gutsy you would use one of the rc.d scripts ldm reads
07:18
sshfs has encryption added on top, i doubt that would be faster than nfs ... but a lot more secure indeed :)

Does LTSP 5 in Ubuntu Feisty allow you to set Swap on the server for the thin client to a specified amount? I think all ours are at just 32 MB of swap. A firefox session of a weather radar is locking up the X Desktop of a user. I might just add ram, but 32MB is not big enough and I'm sorry the rule of thumb of having half of the size of your ram be your swap size is totally inadequate.
13:33
<sbalneav>
joebake1: There isn't per-workstation settings, but you can edit /etc/ltsp/nbdswapd.conf, and set SIZE=64 or SIZE=128
13:34
which will create that size globally.

what is the best way to auto-launch rdesktop after a pxe/ltsp5 thin client boots?
18:32
<mopey>
You could put the script in /opt/../rc.local, or you could add a RCFILE_nn to your lts.conf

thanks mopey, i'll try those... i came across this script: http://www.mail-archive.com/ltsp-discuss@lists.sourceforge.net/msg23599/rdesktop
19:10
but i'm not sure if it's necessary or not with ltsp5?

has anyone seen the behavior where edubuntu gets halfway through loading then drops to a blinking cursor?
19:59
the error says "can't open /etc/ltsp_functions"

<sbalneav>
evening all
21:30
<mistik1>
!s
21:30
<ltspbot`>
mistik1: "s" is Scotty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
21:30
<mistik1>
heh
21:30
hey bro
21:33
<sbalneav>
Hey there
21:34
hmm, trying to figure out the "tun" device
21:34
<mistik1>
what about it
21:34
<sbalneav>
I've got the kernel module "tun" loaded, and I've got a /dev/net/tun device
21:35
but when I do a ip addr add 192.9.201.240/24 dev tun1
21:35
I get
21:35
Cannot find device "tun1"
21:35
<mistik1>
I dont know if I even used it that way
21:41
sbalneav: I usually use tap devs
21:41
tap1,2,3,4 etc
21:43
sbalneav: the easy way would be to grab a copy of usermode-utilities which has tunctl in it
21:43
<sbalneav>
yeah, got that.
21:44
<mistik1>
then just tunctl -u root -t tap0
21:44
and run your command against tap0
21:45
<sbalneav>
Hmmm, the vpn script I've got from jammcq uses tun
21:45
Could try it.
21:47
<mistik1>
I've not seen anything in a while that uses tun?
21:48
where is this script?
21:48
<sbalneav>
I'll pastey pastey
21:48
<mistik1>
ok
21:49
<ltsppbot>
"sbalneav" pasted "vpn" (24 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/211
21:51
<mistik1>
Poor mans VPN, eh?
21:51
<sbalneav>
heh
21:51
yeah
21:55
<mistik1>
hrmm, I definately never used it like that
21:55
not with the tun dev that is
21:56
<sbalneav>
that's ok, I'll catch up with jammcq tomorrow
21:58
<mistik1>
Let me know how it works out
22:02
sbalneav: does your sshd_config have "PermitTunnel yes" in its config ?
22:02
<sbalneav>
hum
22:02
prolly not
22:03* sbalneav twiddles configs
22:03
<mistik1>
I just came across a gentoo doc that pretty much mirrors that script cept for some iptables stuff
22:04
<sbalneav>
anything on the ssh_config side?
22:04
<mistik1>
no
22:04
just the server side from what I see
22:04
<sbalneav>
heh
22:05
firewall's a sarge box.
22:05
doesn't have that :)
22:05
time to upgrade :)
22:05
<mistik1>
ouch!
22:06
actually the iptables stuff is run on the ssh server
22:06
here
22:06
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_VPN_over_SSH_and_tun
22:07
Its not written gentoo specific
22:07
<sbalneav>
ah, thanks
22:08
<mistik1>
np
22:08
as you see the script is pretty much the same
22:12
<sbalneav>
yeah, cool
