<psbakke>
I could use some ideas for how to handle a problem I'm having with getting an old 486 pc to boot. I have an 3c509B NIC installed and I have some partial success getting the boot process started. I'm using Etherboot on a floppy to get things started and everything goes fine until the /linuxrc script starts. After the command: insmod /lib/modules/2.6.20.9.ltsp-1/kernel/drivers/net/3c509.ko finishes, the next line says, Running dhcpcd on port 67. Following this I
00:09
get, ERROR! dhcpcd failed!, then Kernel panic - not syncing. I have ltsp-5.0 installed in the opt directory but am using one of the kernels supplied with ltsp4.2 in my /tftpboot directory because I had other trouble trying to boot from the kernel supplied in the /opt/ltsp/i386/boot directory (Ubuntu).
00:13
BTW, I am running Fedora Core 6 for my boot server.

hi
03:29
I have a little problem here. My clients are equipped with a GF6100 and the nv driver which comes with ltsp4.2 does not support the video card. VESA driver only goes to 1024x768, mayby someone can help me to fix this

<MrMoo>
it failed forcing 1280x1024 in vesa?
04:14
<meeri>
yap
04:14
with every graphic adapter, just tested and older client and I´m getting 1280x960 which looks horrible
04:15
<MrMoo>
what config do you use?
04:15
I'm using this: X_MODE_0 = 1280x1024
04:15
X_HORZSYNC = 64
04:15
X_VERTREFRESH = 60
04:16

Now i´m needing GF6100 drivers
04:20
Our dumb skl bought the crappiest clients avail
04:21
<MrMoo>
I have the cheapest client boxes ever, Starbox with Geode NSCs ~$90 each
04:21
too slow under LTSP 5 because of the new X.org I think
04:21
I now use LTSP 4.2 for them, and 5.0 for others
04:21
<meeri>
well, our skl just bought cheap computers removed the HDD sold them and know i have to set up LTSP as my final project for my graduation
04:22
du you have MSn or ICQ Mr MOO
04:22
<MrMoo>
Both, although I forget to use them
04:24
<meeri>
would you mind if we share numbers if I´m needing prof tips?
04:24
or mail addy
04:29
<MrMoo>
meeri: fnjordy @ hotmail
04:34

<meeri>
do you have experience with the sound module
04:51
<MrMoo>
with LTSP 5 I setup the PulseAudio in Edgy
04:51
I haven't got LTSP 4.2 to do anything, mainly because i'm running Ubuntu Feisty server
04:52
Pulse helps a lot but its not in LTSP 4
04:52
and recording still has a lot of issues
04:53
<meeri>
hmm
04:54
<MrMoo>
I want to try Skype on the terminal too, but I don't have the correct setup for it
04:54
<meeri>
I will try ESD
04:54
<MrMoo>
DHCP providing hostnames, NIS, etc
04:54
<meeri>
or should I try salsa
04:54fernando1 has joined #ltsp
04:54
<MrMoo>
you can choose ESD or NASD only I think
04:55
ALSA/OSS is to connect the sound card
04:55
sound card <- ALSA/OSS -> <- ESD/NASD/Pulse -> Gnome desktop, etc
04:57
<meeri>
puhh
04:57
ESD is newer
04:57
so, hm, I will try ESD
04:57
<MrMoo>
Pulse > ESD > NASD
04:58
I did a pretty diagram here: http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/Edgy/HOWTO:_PulseAudio

I was pleasantly surprised the speed improvement going from a LTSP 5 / MueKow to LTSP 4.2 client on really slow Geode hardware
05:03
but I miss all the LTSP 5 features :((
05:03
<ogra>
did you test gutsy with the new nbd/squashfs/unionfs architecture ?
05:04
<MrMoo>
its ready? I'm waiting on a realtime / lowlatency kernel for some other work
05:04
<ogra>
well ... its ready to play around with it and find the buigs ;)
05:04
*bugs
05:04
<MrMoo>
however I think its the gigantic Xorg 3->4 change that really affected the NSC video chipset
05:05
<ogra>
the new ldm starts in a fifth of the time
05:05
<MrMoo>
the driver stayed the same but Xorgs internal handling appears to have badly affected it
05:06
the performance on Via C3 / Eden chips is fine with MueKow
05:06
<ogra>
make sure to file a bug so it gets at least fixed in gutsy

jammcq, how evil would you consider running hal on clients ?
10:06
with the new ldm architecture we could forward hal info from the client 1:1 to the session
10:06
with rewriting the mountpoints etc indeed, but you would have all hw data directly available
10:07
i feel uncertain about ahving hal and dbus on the client though

well, then i'll play with it

i'm not a big fan of both on setups like thin clients

especailly now that we have the new ldm going
10:14
communication became so easy now
10:14
i think i can also hook something in the logout dialog now to have reboot and shutdown options for the client
