<mhterres>
hello guys
08:15
Hey, I think I'm having a problem with VGA
08:15
lspci says:
08:15
VGA compatible controller: National Semiconductor Corporation Geode GX2 Graphics Processor
08:15
but LTSP 5(Ubuntu Gutsy) hangs up with it
08:16
hello jammcq, morning
08:16
<cliebow_>
mhterres you may have to specify nsc driver
08:17
<mhterres>
hmmm, nsc
08:17
ok, I'm trying vesa without success
08:17
let me sse
08:17
see
08:17
<sbalneav>
mhterres: Yeah, the AMD Geode driver has a problem
08:18
<jammcq>
mhterres: hey, you still traveling with marlon?
08:18
<sbalneav>
Yoy'll have to provide a pre-defined xorg.conf file, and set it with X_CONF = ...
08:18
mhterres: See Bug #140051 on Launchpad.
08:18
<jammcq>
sbalneav: hey, yoy
08:18
<sbalneav>
Hey jammcq
08:19
<mhterres>
hello sbalneav, I did not see you here :-)
08:19
jammcq: Yes, we are in Bagé
08:19
south of Rio Grande do Sul
08:19
near from Uruguai
08:19
<jammcq>
yeah, he was telling me about picking you up at 4am
08:20
<mhterres>
yes
08:20
<joebaker>
If a thin client has an 815 intel graphics chip, do we now get 3D graffics support on Edubuntu thin clients?
08:20
<mhterres>
but he picked me up at 6:30am
08:20
<jammcq>
heh
08:20
<mhterres>
cause the rain was very strong in the night :-)
08:20
<jammcq>
oh
08:20
<mhterres>
Marlon says hello
08:21* jammcq tunnels a "hello" through mhterres
08:21
<mhterres>
hehhe
08:21
great
08:21
:-)
08:21
thanks sbalneav
08:23
<cliebow_>
jammcq:dont know if you read earlier post..but do you suppose tftp transfer blocksize can be reduced? increased? for intelmac tftp?
08:24
<jammcq>
yes
08:24
well
08:24
the default is 512
08:25
the protocol was then "enhanced" to support a 'blksize' request to say it's ok to use larger blocks
08:26
I think the server advertises whether it supports the blksize option, then the client has to request it
08:26
<cliebow_>
ok/lemm look thru this capture
08:26
<mhterres>
we are starting the FISL 9 movement
08:26
movements
08:26
<jammcq>
mhterres: you working on the committee ?
08:26
<mhterres>
the call for papers will start soon
08:26
again in community events
08:26
<jammcq>
mhterres: count on me to be there
08:27
<mhterres>
yes, off course
08:27
and you Scott ?
08:27
and Ogra ? Did you guys convinced him to come next year ?
08:27
:-)
08:27
<cliebow_>
client is requesting blocksize of 512 alright
08:28
blksize 512 tsize 6111050
08:29
then negotiation fails..
08:29
client then requests blocksize of 8192
08:29
<mhterres>
jammcq: but I'm doing all the community event organization in a remote way, cause I can't participate in the meetings. I don't have time now. But I did this this year and works fine.
08:29
<cliebow_>
server acknowledges
08:30
<joebaker>
sbalneav: So the ltsp-localapps spec wiki can be marked up still?
08:34
<mhterres>
sbalneav: I use the nsc driver in the pre-defined xorg.conf ?
08:35
<jammcq>
cliebow_: you can tell your server to NOT support the blksize request, which means the client should stay at 512
08:36
<cliebow_>
ok
08:36
<sbalneav>
joebaker: Yep, I'm adding to it now.
08:38
mhterres: In gutsy, it's now "amd"

it'll be in a nice big suburban
08:44

09:01
<jammcq>
spending friday night in freeport
09:01
<warren>
oh
09:01
<jammcq>
then, saturday morning going to SWHarbor
09:01
<sbalneav>
mhterres: well, you'll have to put the file in the chroot somewhere, say /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/X11/ltsp-amd.conf
09:02
then ltsp-update-image
09:02
then in lts.conf X_CONF=/etc/X11/ltsp-amd.conf
09:02
<mhterres>
Yes, I did it :-(
09:03
I create the file /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ltsp/xorg.amd.conf
09:03
<sbalneav>
Well, SCREEN_07=shell, then try starting Xorg manually
09:03
see what errors you get.
09:03
<mhterres>
hmmm, great idea :-)
09:06
<warren>
hmm
09:07
<mhterres>
I can't go to shell, cause it is not responding the keyboard
09:07
but I can log in the client using ssh
09:07
from my note
09:07
<jammcq>
warren: I do have 1 seat available in my car, if you want to ride with us
09:07
<warren>
jammcq, how many people are in your Suburban from BOS -> ME and back?
09:07
hm
09:07
<jammcq>
with you.... 6
09:07
nice-n-comfortable that way
09:08
<sbalneav>
mhterres: What happens if you set the root password, and log in on the getty on tty1?
09:08
<jammcq>
and I think Jorge has some room, and Davidj is renting a car, he'll likely have room
09:08
<sbalneav>
chroot /opt/ltsp/i386/
09:08
passwd
09:08
<mhterres>
I did this
09:08
<sbalneav>
<set pw>
09:08
exit
09:08
<mhterres>
but I can't access tty1 in the client
09:08
<sbalneav>
ltsp-update-image
09:08
<mhterres>
looks like the keyboard is not responding
09:08
<sbalneav>
You can't access tty1?
09:08
Wow
09:08
<mhterres>
yes
09:08
that is the problem
09:09
:-(
09:09
<warren>
So LTSP-5 in Fedora is beginning to shape up
09:09* jammcq wonders what he's set SCREEN_01 to
09:09
<warren>
which Edubuntu should I download to compare?
09:09
<jammcq>
warren: yes, that's what I've been hearing
09:09
<sbalneav>

09:13
ltsppbot: hi
09:16
<sbalneav>
sakhi__: What's your network laid out like?
09:16
Maybe you've got some double'd ip addresses?
09:17
mhterres: Well, that seems totally normal.
09:17
<mhterres>
yes
09:18
that is the most strange part :-)
09:18
<sbalneav>
You might want to try removing the "quiet splash" from the end of /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.conf/default file.
09:18
Just in case it's the bootsplash stuff that's hanging things up.
09:18
I've seen that screw things up on some boxes.
09:18
<mhterres>
I did this yesterday with the old lts.conf
09:18
I'll try again now
09:22
no way Scott
09:22
<sbalneav>
Still locks up?
09:22
<mhterres>
after the X try to come up, some green dashed lines pop up in the monitor and nothing else works anymore
09:22
but I can log in the client via ssh
09:22
<sbalneav>
Ok, well, set up the SCREEN_07=shell thing
09:23
<mhterres>
ok
09:23
<sbalneav>
Then you should be able to log in via tty1
09:23
<mhterres>
ok
09:23
trying it
09:23
<sbalneav>
We'll try to start Xorg from there.
09:23
<mhterres>
ok
09:24Avatara has joined #ltsp
09:26
<mhterres>
same thing
09:27
and now I discover something interesting
09:27
<sbalneav>
X still tried to start?
09:27
It shouldn't
09:27
<mhterres>
If I press CTRL+ALT+F1, the green dashed lines change
09:27
<sbalneav>
yeah
09:27
I've seen that with the amd driver
09:27
<Q-FUNK>
X insists upon restarting when killed
09:27
<mhterres>
If I presse CTRL+ALT+FXX they change again
09:27
<sbalneav>
but X shouldn't be starting now
09:27
<mhterres>
so, something is happening
09:28
I'll put this in the default section
09:28
let me sse
09:28
<sbalneav>
Where have you got the lts.conf file located?
09:28
<mhterres>
see
09:28
/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
09:28
<Q-FUNK>
i see it on my ubuntu laptop: during shutdown, X repeatedly tries to restart, even after gdm has been cleanly told to terminate
09:29
<sbalneav>
sure, but it shouldn't even START with SCREEN_07=shell
09:30
there should be no X at all
09:30
<mhterres>
maybe a frame buffer problem ?
09:30
I'm testing it agina, using the 2 thin clients
09:30
<sbalneav>
But if you've removed the "quiet splash" from the pxe config, then THAT shouldn't be an issue either.
09:30
everything should be text
09:31
<mhterres>
oh yes, off course
09:31
yes, in the other client there is no X
09:31
this is not about X
09:32
I can't understand
09:33
<sbalneav>
Oh, so it's screwing up IN TEXT MODE?!?!
09:33
Yikes
09:33
<mhterres>
yes
09:33
I imagine that
09:34
<sbalneav>
Wow
09:34
<mhterres>
the problem is after starting the kernel log daemon
09:35
<sbalneav>
Hmm, maybe try different "vga=" parameters on the pxe config kernel command line.
09:35
<mhterres>
screen goes black and don't retunr
09:35
<sbalneav>
Oh, maybe also specify "noacpi"
09:35
<mhterres>
in default ?
09:35
<sbalneav>
yeah
09:35
How many terminals like this are there.
09:35
?
09:37
<mhterres>
In this moment just one, but It was working in 4.2
09:37primeministerp has joined #ltsp
09:37Avatara has quit IRC
09:37
<sbalneav>
Yeah, but Xorg's completely rewitten the X drivers
09:37
<mhterres>
yes, I know
09:37
I just said that to guarantee that the hardware is working
09:38
DEFAULT vmlinuz ro initrd=initrd.img fb=false pci=noacpi vga=normal
09:38
l'm trying this right now
09:38
<sbalneav>
is it pci=noacpi, or just noacpi?
09:38
<mhterres>
same problem
09:38
:-(
09:38
pci=noacpi
09:38
<sbalneav>
So it's something that that box doesn't like about the 2.6 kernel then.
09:39
<mhterres>
maybe
09:39
<sbalneav>
Any chance of doing a BIOS upgrade?
09:39
<mhterres>
no
09:39
I'll report this problem to our client
09:39
I guess they will buy the other thin client anyway
09:40
<sbalneav>
You've gotten other clients working with LTSP5 though, right?
09:40
I'd file a bug against the kernel, maybe.
09:40
<mhterres>
but we will buy one of this thin clients for Propus, so we will test this again :-)
09:40
sbalneav: yes, other models is working fine
09:40
<sbalneav>
Q-FUNK sent me a ThinCan, which uses a geode, but has a linux bios.
09:41
Other than the amd issue, which can be solved with the X_CONF= it works fine.
09:41
<Q-FUNK>
sbalneav: what you has uses linuxbios. this is why we need etherboot.
09:42
<sbalneav>
And I've spoken to one of the X developers here, the fellow listed in Bug #140051, and they're working on the amd issue.
09:42
<Q-FUNK>
bryce?
09:42
<sbalneav>
Q-FUNK: right, we switched over to the different mke2fs bit.
09:42
Q-FUNK: Yeah, nice guy
09:42
Glad I was able to meet him.
09:43
<Q-FUNK>
jordan at AMD also said he'd lok into it, since he notices that it bites every distro who switche dto the new X
09:43
<sbalneav>
Yeah, it's an upstream Xorg problem. It'll get sorted out. :)
09:48

I'm having an issue with LOCAL_STORAGE

Hello everyone,
20:33
I'm trying to run an opengl program, xmoto, on a K12ltsp centos 5 release and can't get the glx to go...
20:34
blender works though...
20:35
I'm ready to move my home system to ltsp-5 on debian or ubuntu if I can get this system working!!
20:35
Is it possible?? ;-)

20:51* PMantis is looking at dedicated thin clients... does the "LTSP Term 1220 PXE" suport local sound with LTSP 4.2 and/or 5.0 with Ubuntu?
20:51
<jammcq>
PMantis: yeah, should work with both
20:52
<PMantis>
Why is sound on the LTSP Term 1000 harder?
20:52
<jammcq>
cuz it uses the sis7019 chipset
20:53
the driver isn't completely opensource
20:53
<PMantis>
bastards
20:53
It's *almost* the perfect thin client. :)
20:53
<jammcq>
well, the driver is available, but there's no license information in the code, so it can't be distributed with distro kernels
20:54
<jim__>
Hi jim m. I've never tried to run a glx program like xmoto or flightgear on a client. Is it possible?
20:54
<PMantis>
But, like "restricted" Ubuntu packages, I assume it could be compiled in later with more effort.
20:54
<jammcq>
jim__: it should be, but i'm not a glx guy
20:55
<PMantis>
That's *really* slick to mount the thin client with the monitor.
20:55
<jim__>
me either! tux racer can work out of the box... but not on my systems!!
20:56
I've seen tux racer run using mesa no prob but with the module glx loaded in lts.conf for us it doesn't go... oh well
20:57
I run ltsp for my computer club at school and my students would love to have some of these glx programs to work!!!
21:08
Well!! Take care Jim M. Bye

just plug the ethernet, go to the hotel page and enable internet (as with the hotel wifi)
23:43
<moquist>
I can connect with the w/l just fine, and I can ping my gateway. But my browser doesn't go to the sign-in page, so I can't get my system recognized by their gateway so I can get out to the 'Net.
23:44
stgraber: exactly. That's the step that's not working for me.
