<gp>
How do I get session locking to work on fat clients? On thin clients users can type in their password to unlock the session. But on fat clients they cannot. The lock greeter says logging into ltsp234 (fat client hostname) for fat clients, but just ltsp (server hostname) on thin clients
15:54
But fat client lock screen always says invalid password
15:55
<alkisg>
gp: which desktop environment are you using?
15:55
<gp>
MATE
15:55
<alkisg>
LTSP tells gnome to not use screen locking on fat clients
15:56
You could tell the same to mate,
15:56
<gp>
I would like to use locking though
15:56
<alkisg>
or, you could use a very new ltsp version, and set LDM_PASSWORD_HASH=True in lts.conf
15:56
Which distro/version are you using?
15:56
<gp>
Ubuntu Mate 14.04 LTS
15:57
<alkisg>
!greek-schools
15:57
<ltsp`>
I do not know about 'greek-schools', but I do know about these similar topics: 'greek-schools-ppa'
15:57
<alkisg>
!greek-schools-ppa
15:57
<ltsp`>
greek-schools-ppa: https://launchpad.net/~ts.sch.gr/+archive/ppa/ supports LTS Ubuntu releases with newer LTSP versions, bug fixes etc
15:57
<alkisg>
You would need to add this ppa to get a newer ltsp version, and set that var in lts.conf
15:57
<gp>
What does that setting do?
15:58
Meaning, how does it work?
15:58
<alkisg>
Upon login, it takes the password from ldm, then hashes it, and puts the result to /etc/shadow
15:59
So sudo, password locking etc work normally, but if you change the password, it only gets changed in the client, so it's lost on the next login
15:59
(if a fat client user changes his password, I mean)
16:03
<gp>
I think that is worth trying. Thanks

<gp>
Thinking from a different angle... is it possible to suspend the user session and send the user back to the LDM greeter instead of a screen saver?
17:07
<alkisg>
gp: LDM doesn't support multiple users, you would have to log him off completely
17:07
You can trick that by declaring a logout script as your screensaver
17:08
<gp>
Ah too bad. That would probably end up causing users to lose data
17:10
Does the password hash option update every time the user logs in? I use remote authentication so I am worried about passwords getting out of sync
17:10
not that they change that often i guess
17:11
<alkisg>
On login
17:13
<gp>
Do you think the password hash approach is better than attempting to get the fat client to remote authenticate?
17:14
<alkisg>
gp: how do you plan to make the fat client to authenticate remotely?
17:14
Currently, it's using LDM+SSH
17:14
LDM doesn't know any other way, so you'd have to replace LDM as well
17:16
<gp>
it was just a thought. i figured some sort of pam module. the server uses a remote user store so i figured the fat clients could too. but it would probably be more effort than using the password hash
17:16
<alkisg>
LDM doesn't use PAM
17:16
That's a plan for LTSP 6, to ditch ldm...
17:17
<gp>
good to know. i am not familiar with LDM at this point
17:17
well the password hash option will get me going. thanks for the help
17:18
<alkisg>
np
17:19
<gp>
what desktop do you use for LTSP?
17:19
<alkisg>
gnome-flashback, I'm also trying Mate recently
17:20
But I fear that Mate doesn't have a future...
17:20
It would be better if the Mate devs helped gnome-flashback instead :/
17:20
<gp>
=(
17:21
I haven't used gnome-flashback. I tried unity first because it was on the default installer. But the performance was awful on thin clients
17:22
<alkisg>
Yup, 3d doesn't work over the network well or sometimes at all
17:24
<gp>
I guess gsetting org.mate.lockdown disable-user-switching should be set to true since LDM doesn't support multiple users
17:25
Having trouble with all the different ways the desktop allows the user to shut the system down
17:25
<alkisg>
That's a setting for the mate display manager, we're not using it so its value doesn't matter
17:25
Yes that part is a mess with linux

I had to use the following for usbmount to work on the clients echo "var/run/usbmount/.mount.lock" >> /etc/ltsp/ltsp-update-image.excludes
19:43
But currently using Ubuntu 14.04 so that might be part of the problem. Going to give the ppa a shot with the updates
19:44
<alkisg>
Why do you need usbmount on fat clients?
19:44
Usb devices work normally on fats...
19:44
<gp_>
So usb drives are consistently mounted and symlinked to /var/run/usbmount to allow the freerdp screen to work with the same SCREEN_X command in lts.conf
19:45
for fat and thin clients
19:45
<alkisg>
freerdp isn't fat, it's before login, ok
19:45
<gp_>
Right
19:45
<alkisg>
You could run freerdp after login, if it suits you, so that gnome automounts devices normally
19:46
About var/run, isn't it a symlink on your server?
19:47
<gp_>
Yes. But for some reason the updating the image seemed to copy the files over without the excludes
19:47
<alkisg>
Is that ltsp-pnp ?
19:47
<gp_>
Yes
19:47
<alkisg>
Then it sounds like a bug that should be filed upstream...
19:48
<gp_>
I am going to try out the ppa. It may have been fixed since the 14.04 release
19:48
<alkisg>
My i386.img doesn't have anything there
19:48
/var/run is a symlink, and /run is an empty dir
19:49
<gp_>
Well I had to add that because it copied the usbmount lock file from the server so my clients couldn't ever mount usb sticks
19:50
<alkisg>
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ltsp-upstream/ltsp/ltsp-trunk/changes?filter_file_id=nbdexclude-20120514152613-s59cks0y3y3ne2zt-2
19:50
No changes to that file related to /run, since its beginning...
19:50
It needs debugging in your pc
19:50
<gp_>
Okay
19:50
<alkisg>
To see if usbmount does something weird
19:51
<gp_>
I will test it again without the excludes
19:51
I am going to create a new image from the ppa. I will test it then
19:51
<alkisg>
You do need to have the run/* exclude
19:51
It's there by default
19:52
<gp_>
also, "gsettings set org.mate.media-handling automount false" or the equivalent for gnome allows seamless integration with usbmount
19:52
the drives even show up on the desktop when plugged in
19:52
<alkisg>
I think it would make more sense to use the session tools for freerdp too, not the reverse...
19:53
But ok whatever works
19:54
<gp_>
Can you explain? I am just getting the hang of this and I was having trouble with the mailing list
19:55
<alkisg>
I don't have a solution to explain, but I would prefer it if the same tools that gnome uses for automount, were used before login too
19:55
<gp_>
Oh yeah that would be better
19:55
<alkisg>
E.g. ltsp could register a user for freerdp,
19:55
and mark it "active" for policykit, so that he has the right to automount sticks etc
19:56
<gp_>
But for the time being I was able to get usbmount to work for both fat and thin clients with an rc.local file that creates the directories it expects on client boot
19:57
<alkisg>
Check RCFILE_xx in lts.conf, it's easier than modifying rc.local
19:58
Or even INIT_COMMAND_xx
19:59
<gp_>
I found the RCFILE_XX, but INIT_COMMAND_XX would be better since rc.local exits on any errors
19:59
<alkisg>
INIT_COMMAND runs very very early, so you don't have services etc available
19:59
For mkdirs it's fine though
20:00
You can also use RCFILE_xx="command || true"
