make sure your users are in the right default group
which is the right default group?
well, usually you haver one group with the users name that gets gcreated at user creation time
that should be the users default group, device access is managed by that group with ltspfs
yes. main group for every user is same as username
hmm, then you shouldnt see the floppy icons
at least not the ones of other users

I was able to print using lp command ( echo "test" | lp -U client_user -h ltsp_server_ip:631 -d cups_printer_name ) but using the default lpr command for printer it complains about "unknown printer" I think this may be happening because /etc/printcap of the chroot is coming empty with no address to the remote printers
if the cups server were installed in the chroot and the printers.conf was copied to the croot this couldn't help ?

I am using LTSP in my school
I would like to automount a directory on the Desktop of each newly connected user
connected to a thin client
Remaille, what do you want to automate in such directory ?
actually, it is a windows share
at least I would like to automounr \\SERVEUR\PATH
to be able to open myname, they need a login/pass
Remaille, have you tryied to create a launcher with something like smb://SERVER/PATH ?
good idea :)
but owh could i "spread" this launcher ?
on all the desktops ?
Remaille, I have created a bash script that I run when I add some new user to the server... maybe you should do the same
you could do something much simples like a cp launcher.desktop /home/*/Desktop/
maginot, you mean a script that will copy something somewhere for each user ?
gosh, I didn't knwo that cp was regex compliant ! cp launcher.desktop /home/*/Desktop/ works ?
Remaille, did it worked?
euh i am not on the ltsp server here, just my box
but cp launcher.desktop /home/*/Desktop/
juste need to fin the proper line to put in it
Remaille: I use a script like this:
1) first I get all users starting with student : a=`ls /home | grep student`
2) Then I do a for loop.. for f in $a
3) using e.g. this inside: cp -p ~/totem.desktop /home/$f/Desktop/
|09:06||Selveste1 has joined #ltsp|
very intersting din_os :))
ps aux|grep LTSP_CLIENT|cut -d' ' -f1
that gives you a list of all logged in ltsp users on the servers
for user in $(ps axu|grep LTSP_CLIENT|cut -d' ' -f1|tr '\n' ' ');do if [ ! -f /home/$user ];then cp launcher.desktop /home/$user/Desktop/; fi;done
something like that should work
oh, indeed ... if [ ! -f /home/$user/Desktop/launcher.desktop ] ...
is there anyone up to help with the printing from localapps issue?

Can anyone point out a good way to keep a script running after entering chroot
_UsUrPeR_: what do you mean?
say I am creating a script to make some changes to an LTSP server
and that script is going to also be making changes in the chroot (i.e. apt-get update in chroot)
|09:48||F-GT has joined #ltsp|
does chrooting to the boot image stop a script from running?
why not run each chroot command prefaced with chroot $chroot
Could you give me an example of a code line for that?
so, let's say you do something like:
echo "This begins my script"
... some commands outside chroot ...
chroot $mychroot mount -t proc proc /proc
chroot $mychroot LTSP_HANDLE_DAEMONS=False apt-get upgrade
ok I see
OR, you could simply make a separate script that will run in the chroot
and call that
mount --bind /my/dir $mychroot/tmp
chroot $mychroot /tmp/$(basename $myscript)
I thought that a script running chroot stuff would break once entering chroot
all depends on how you ask it

What distro would you say has the best support for LTSP?
Fedora,Debain or Ubuntu
I lovee the way Debian handles it
|11:15||Subhodip has joined #ltsp|
I guess it'd be quite similar in Ubunto, since it is based on Debian
ltsp5 comes from ubuntu though
but we worked closely together, fedora cam some years later to it
so the ubuntu and debian implementations are relatively equal
what do you think better for old 200mhz system, fedora or ubuntu?
ubuntu seems kinda slow on the old machiens
200MHz for what? the thin clients?
200mhz with 128mb of ram
I would go with Debian and a lightweight window manager or desktop, LXDE, for example
You think Debian would be better?
right now I have ubuntu on them, but hmm
evilx, Debian even has a dedicated installation CD for LXDE+XFCE on Lenny
|11:24||* ogra would go with ubuntu on such low powered systems and use a lightweight desktop|
oh for realz, sweet
see, to many arguement
right now i have 8.10 on it and seems to be slow
simply because ubuntu kernels on clients use compcache by default
even with like fce
ogra, should I use 8.04 or 8.1?
evilx, try LXDE, it makes a huge difference, really
LXDE.org | Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment
Gadi, the command you said isnt valid ... there is no option -H ...
evilx, of course, if you don't really need a desktop (desktop icons, etc.) you might do better with a window manager
maginot: -H server[:port]
Specifies an alternate server.
I have icons on the desktop, so the people downstairs can figure out what to click
(from man lpr)
lxde.org not loading and giving me gibberish, dangi t
evilx, I'm looking at it right now fine
It just acting weird here for some readon
Gadi, I tried here and is onlying show the command option discription ... O.o here at man I can find the -H option for lpr ... (am i crazy?)
lpr [ -E ] [ -H server[:port] ] [ -U username ] [ -P destina-
your crazy, I even seen it in the man pages farther down
but I did locate an older lpr man page that has no -H
evilx, well, indeed man lpr in the server shows -H but not in the chroot
diferent version ??
|11:31||lucascoala has quit IRC|
so ... should I update it?
seens to be the most recenty
Gadi, so... I can't do lpr -H in the chroot of the client because lpr there seens to not have this option ... only the lpr version in the server
oh lxde is what on eeeboxs
maginot: is cups-bsd installed in the chroot?
|11:44||Subhodip has quit IRC|
Gadi, cupsys-bsd are installed just in the server ... Im going to install on the chroot now
Gadi, are you thinking about using the same printers.conf of the server on the chroot?
hadnt crossed my mind
my server's lpr comes from cups-bsd
and it has -H
nice thought ;D
what if were a cups server on the client with the same printer configuration of the server?
|11:57||bobby_C has quit IRC|
maginot: too much overhead
you just want the client to be a cups client to the server
and use all of its queues
and have the server spool
not the clients
(since clients have limited space)

Gadi, haha perfect solution, after installing cupsys-bsd on client (and lpr get updated) I was able to print from an application (firefox) running from ltsp-localapps :)
I'm trying to use the "--late-packages" option with ltsp-build-client in ubuntu 8.10. It doesn't seem to process any options past the first (i.e. if I include something like ltsp-build-client --arch i386 --copy-sourceslist --late-packages firefox flashplugin-nonfree java6) it does not seem to install past firefox
i the man page for ltsp-build-client, it says that separating packages with a space is the way to use the --late-packages option
maybe you have to quote it
--late-packages "1 2 3"
lemme try that
building client now :P

it should also say that you can comma separate it

ogra: none of those imply nomenclature though

Its crashing with a Segment Fault error output

stgraber: hi. Working with your LVDS fix on a DLW 1520
ok, what distro ?
stgraber: Does that script go in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/X11/Xsesssion.d/XS20-xserver-intel-desktop-hack ?
using ubuntu 8.04
won't work with 8.04
we only have the infrastructure for that since 8.10 with my PPA or 9.04 natively (will be released next month)
Ok. is that the proper file placement?
no, it'll be /usr/share/ltsp/screen-session.d/
ok, thank you
in Ubuntu 8.10 with my PPA and 9.04 (as it'll be released) the fix is included by default so the DLW1520 will work out of the box

guys, can anyone simple explain me whats inside the image that the dhcp send to the client? What is running in the client memory....
everything needed to get you to a login screen :)
maginot: u mean the initramfs?
or the chroot?
Or pxelinux.0? :)
lets start again
when the clients login in the ldm
whats come to the memory and stays there until logout?
perhaps it would be easier to ask what you are concerned about
odd things happening?
okay, no no, is more like if I install firefox in chroot this will be in the memory of the client?
when you run firefox as a local app
it will load firefox into thin client memory
the app itself is stored in the chroot image, which is on the server
but first will fetch from server right?
so is just the kernel that is on memory since boot?
you can have 100GB chroot without needing 100GB RAM in the client
stgraber: where can I get your PPA?
the kernel + initramfs + any runtime applications
like services needed in the chroot
for local devices
Hmm I see...
I have to go now, but tomorrow I would like to understand more about this thanks for now

i bet when i call back then.. they'll give me another free month.. anything they can do to try to make me forget to cancel
so they can charge me $14
luckily.. i have a computer :)
that can remind me of such things
i'd say $14 isn't really that bad of a price to check all 3 .. and get the credit score
i just know that it is pointless to keep wathcing until that nonsense thing is gone
somehow.. virginia natural gas.. thinks i owe them $800.. :(
that's my only outstanding debt
now if only i can get them to realize.. it's not mine at all.. :(
i'll be debt free
for my first car loan, I didn't bother checking until a problem came up
a CC that I had cancelled 4 years prior was showing up in experian that I owed them $15,000
took about 5 days to get it straightened out
