06:40
<ogra>
make sure your users are in the right default group
06:40
<valvoja>
which is the right default group?
06:41
<ogra>
well, usually you haver one group with the users name that gets gcreated at user creation time
06:42
that should be the users default group, device access is managed by that group with ltspfs
06:42
<valvoja>
yes. main group for every user is same as username
06:42
<ogra>
hmm, then you shouldnt see the floppy icons
06:43
at least not the ones of other users

I was able to print using lp command ( echo "test" | lp -U client_user -h ltsp_server_ip:631 -d cups_printer_name ) but using the default lpr command for printer it complains about "unknown printer" I think this may be happening because /etc/printcap of the chroot is coming empty with no address to the remote printers
08:38
if the cups server were installed in the chroot and the printers.conf was copied to the croot this couldn't help ?

<Remaille>
hi all
08:42
I am using LTSP in my school
08:43
I would like to automount a directory on the Desktop of each newly connected user
08:43
connected to a thin client
08:48
<maginot>
Remaille, what do you want to automate in such directory ?
08:48
<Remaille>
actually, it is a windows share
08:49
like \\SERVEUR\PATH\myname
08:49
at least I would like to automounr \\SERVEUR\PATH
08:49
to be able to open myname, they need a login/pass
08:50
<maginot>
Remaille, have you tryied to create a launcher with something like smb://SERVER/PATH ?
08:50
<Remaille>
no
08:50
good idea :)
08:51
but owh could i "spread" this launcher ?
08:51
on all the desktops ?
08:52
<maginot>
Remaille, I have created a bash script that I run when I add some new user to the server... maybe you should do the same
08:52
you could do something much simples like a cp launcher.desktop /home/*/Desktop/
08:52
<Remaille>
maginot, you mean a script that will copy something somewhere for each user ?
08:53
gosh, I didn't knwo that cp was regex compliant ! cp launcher.desktop /home/*/Desktop/ works ?
08:55
:) nice
08:55
<maginot>
Remaille, did it worked?
08:56
<Remaille>
euh i am not on the ltsp server here, just my box
08:56
but cp launcher.desktop /home/*/Desktop/
08:56
works
08:56
juste need to fin the proper line to put in it
09:03
<din_os>
Remaille: I use a script like this:
09:04
1) first I get all users starting with student : a=`ls /home | grep student`
09:05
2) Then I do a for loop.. for f in $a
09:05
3) using e.g. this inside: cp -p ~/totem.desktop /home/$f/Desktop/
09:06Selveste1 has joined #ltsp
09:08
<Remaille>
very intersting din_os :))
09:09
<ogra>
ps aux|grep LTSP_CLIENT|cut -d' ' -f1
09:09
that gives you a list of all logged in ltsp users on the servers
09:13
for user in $(ps axu|grep LTSP_CLIENT|cut -d' ' -f1|tr '\n' ' ');do if [ ! -f /home/$user ];then cp launcher.desktop /home/$user/Desktop/; fi;done
09:13
something like that should work
09:14
oh, indeed ... if [ ! -f /home/$user/Desktop/launcher.desktop ] ...

<_UsUrPeR_>
Can anyone point out a good way to keep a script running after entering chroot
09:47
?
09:47
<Gadi>
_UsUrPeR_: what do you mean?
09:48
<_UsUrPeR_>
say I am creating a script to make some changes to an LTSP server
09:48
and that script is going to also be making changes in the chroot (i.e. apt-get update in chroot)
09:48F-GT has joined #ltsp
09:49
<_UsUrPeR_>
does chrooting to the boot image stop a script from running?
09:49
<Gadi>
why not run each chroot command prefaced with chroot $chroot
09:50
<_UsUrPeR_>
Could you give me an example of a code line for that?
09:50
<Gadi>
hmm..
09:50
so, let's say you do something like:
09:50
echo "This begins my script"
09:50
... some commands outside chroot ...
09:51
mychroot=/opt/ltsp/i386
09:51
chroot $mychroot mount -t proc proc /proc
09:51
chroot $mychroot LTSP_HANDLE_DAEMONS=False apt-get upgrade
09:51
...
09:51
<_UsUrPeR_>
ok I see
09:52
<Gadi>
OR, you could simply make a separate script that will run in the chroot
09:52
and call that
09:52
like this:
09:52
myscript=/my/dir/myscript
09:53
mount --bind /my/dir $mychroot/tmp
09:53
chroot $mychroot /tmp/$(basename $myscript)
09:53
umount $mychroot/tmp
09:54
<_UsUrPeR_>
ok
09:54
cool
09:54
I thought that a script running chroot stuff would break once entering chroot
09:55
<Gadi>
all depends on how you ask it
09:55
:)

What distro would you say has the best support for LTSP?
11:11
Fedora,Debain or Ubuntu
11:14
<NeonLicht>
I lovee the way Debian handles it
11:15Subhodip has joined #ltsp
11:15
<NeonLicht>
I guess it'd be quite similar in Ubunto, since it is based on Debian
11:15
<ogra>
ltsp5 comes from ubuntu though
11:16
but we worked closely together, fedora cam some years later to it
11:16
so the ubuntu and debian implementations are relatively equal
11:21
<evilx>
what do you think better for old 200mhz system, fedora or ubuntu?
11:21
ubuntu seems kinda slow on the old machiens
11:22
<NeonLicht>
200MHz for what? the thin clients?
11:22
<evilx>
yeah
11:22
200mhz with 128mb of ram
11:23
<NeonLicht>
I would go with Debian and a lightweight window manager or desktop, LXDE, for example
11:23
<evilx>
You think Debian would be better?
11:23
right now I have ubuntu on them, but hmm
11:23
<NeonLicht>
evilx, Debian even has a dedicated installation CD for LXDE+XFCE on Lenny
11:24* ogra would go with ubuntu on such low powered systems and use a lightweight desktop
11:24
<evilx>
oh for realz, sweet
11:24
see, to many arguement
11:24
right now i have 8.10 on it and seems to be slow
11:24
<ogra>
simply because ubuntu kernels on clients use compcache by default
11:24
<evilx>
even with like fce
11:24
xfce*
11:24
ogra, should I use 8.04 or 8.1?
11:24
<NeonLicht>
evilx, try LXDE, it makes a huge difference, really
11:25
<evilx>
LXDE?
11:25
<NeonLicht>
yes, LXDE
11:25
<evilx>
im googlgin
11:25
<ogra>
evilx, 8.10
11:25
<evilx>
okay

<maginot>
Gadi, the command you said isnt valid ... there is no option -H ...
11:26
<NeonLicht>
evilx, of course, if you don't really need a desktop (desktop icons, etc.) you might do better with a window manager
11:26
<Gadi>
maginot: -H server[:port]
11:26
Specifies an alternate server.
11:26
<evilx>
I have icons on the desktop, so the people downstairs can figure out what to click
11:26

11:27
<NeonLicht>
evilx, I'm looking at it right now fine
11:27
<evilx>
It just acting weird here for some readon
11:27
<maginot>
Gadi, I tried here and is onlying show the command option discription ... O.o here at man I can find the -H option for lpr ... (am i crazy?)
11:28
<evilx>
SYNOPSIS
11:28
lpr [ -E ] [ -H server[:port] ] [ -U username ] [ -P destina-
11:29
your crazy, I even seen it in the man pages farther down
11:29
but I did locate an older lpr man page that has no -H
11:30
<maginot>
evilx, well, indeed man lpr in the server shows -H but not in the chroot
11:30
diferent version ??
11:30
<evilx>
maybe
11:31lucascoala has quit IRC
11:32
<maginot>
so ... should I update it?
11:35
seens to be the most recenty
11:41
Gadi, so... I can't do lpr -H in the chroot of the client because lpr there seens to not have this option ... only the lpr version in the server
11:42
<evilx>
oh lxde is what on eeeboxs
11:43
<Gadi>
maginot: is cups-bsd installed in the chroot?
11:44Subhodip has quit IRC
11:44
<maginot>
Gadi, cupsys-bsd are installed just in the server ... Im going to install on the chroot now
11:46
Gadi, are you thinking about using the same printers.conf of the server on the chroot?
11:46
<Gadi>
nope
11:46
hadnt crossed my mind
11:47
my server's lpr comes from cups-bsd
11:47
and it has -H
11:47
:)
11:47
<maginot>
nice thought ;D
11:47
lets see
11:56
what if were a cups server on the client with the same printer configuration of the server?
11:57bobby_C has quit IRC
11:57
<Gadi>
maginot: too much overhead
11:57
you just want the client to be a cups client to the server
11:57
and use all of its queues
11:58
and have the server spool
11:58
not the clients
11:58
(since clients have limited space)

Gadi, haha perfect solution, after installing cupsys-bsd on client (and lpr get updated) I was able to print from an application (firefox) running from ltsp-localapps :)
12:21
<_UsUrPeR_>
I'm trying to use the "--late-packages" option with ltsp-build-client in ubuntu 8.10. It doesn't seem to process any options past the first (i.e. if I include something like ltsp-build-client --arch i386 --copy-sourceslist --late-packages firefox flashplugin-nonfree java6) it does not seem to install past firefox
12:22
i the man page for ltsp-build-client, it says that separating packages with a space is the way to use the --late-packages option
12:23
<johnny>
maybe you have to quote it
12:23
--late-packages "1 2 3"

we only have the infrastructure for that since 8.10 with my PPA or 9.04 natively (will be released next month)
14:24

14:54
<Gadi>
maginot: u mean the initramfs?

14:54
<maginot>
okay
14:55
lets start again
14:55
when the clients login in the ldm
14:55
whats come to the memory and stays there until logout?
14:56
<Gadi>
perhaps it would be easier to ask what you are concerned about
14:56
memory usage?
14:56
odd things happening?
14:56
<maginot>
okay, no no, is more like if I install firefox in chroot this will be in the memory of the client?
14:56
<Gadi>
when you run firefox as a local app
14:57
it will load firefox into thin client memory
14:57
the app itself is stored in the chroot image, which is on the server
14:57
<maginot>
but first will fetch from server right?
14:57
ok
14:57
so is just the kernel that is on memory since boot?
14:57
<Gadi>
you can have 100GB chroot without needing 100GB RAM in the client
14:58
<_UsUrPeR_>
stgraber: where can I get your PPA?
14:58
<Gadi>
