vagrantc: is it possible for me to upload newer ltsp releases to e.g. experimental, so that I could then sync to ubuntu from there?
05:30quinox has left IRC (quinox!~quinox@ghost.qtea.nl, Quit: :wq)
05:31quinox has joined IRC (quinox!~quinox@ghost.qtea.nl)
05:55
<vagrantc>
alkisg: if you were a DM, sure
05:56
<alkisg>
vagrantc: ah, there's no way for me to do the work and for you to just say "ok, upload it" somewhere...
05:56
<vagrantc>
alkisg: you could prep the upload, upload to mentors.debian.net, and i could sign and upload to debian, sure.
06:08
<alkisg>
vagrantc: I'm wondering about jetpipe not starting in ubuntu, remember it was mistakenly started from init-ltsp.d, and you've fixed it for debian, does the fix also apply to ubuntu?
06:09
<vagrantc>
alkisg: yeah, it's patches applied in the debian packaging
06:09
but maybe ubuntu isn't using the init script it gets patched into?
06:09
<alkisg>
Probably... but now it's switched to systemd, so I don't know if it will drop the upstart job... stgraber?
06:10
<vagrantc>
upstart? a systemd .service file?
06:10
would be really good to support native systemd service files, there are some really nice security features that would enable, and probably simplify our codebase greatly.
06:11
<alkisg>
In my 16.04 I have both: /etc/init.d/ltsp-client-core /etc/init/ltsp-client-core.conf
06:11
<vagrantc>
i don't know if systemd has backwards compatibility for upstart jobs... definitely for sysvinit
06:12
<alkisg>
Wouldn't it be better to have a /usr/share/ltsp/ltsp-service file, so that the sysvinit/upstart/systemd services just called that one?
06:12
<vagrantc>
ideally, we write some functions that can be used by either sysvinit, systemd or upstart...
06:12
<alkisg>
We do have ltsp-client-common-functions for that
06:12
<vagrantc>
yes, we just need to write some glue for the various ways of calling the functions
06:14
<alkisg>
*I meant ltsp-init-common
06:15
<vagrantc>
wonder if this is worth looking into for LTSP https://github.com/linuxfoundation/cii-best-practices-badge/blob/master/doc/criteria.md
06:15
and our vast developer community ... :)
06:15
<alkisg>
Haha
06:20
Would anyone mind if we added a "bounties" page in ltsp.org?
06:20
Where users and developers would mention what new features like to see implemented, and offer/accept some bounties for them?
06:21
<vagrantc>
maybe worth bringing to the list(s) also?
06:21
<alkisg>
E.g. "support gentoo: 200€ - developer: knipwim" and the users could just pay them with paypal, bitcoin etc, simple things with not much overhead
06:22
True, it's worth it to bring it up to the lists if noone objects here...
06:22
<vagrantc>
i keep hoping snowdrift.coop would actually come online for real, but it's been slow
06:22
as they have some interesting ideas on how to do these sorts of things
06:23
<alkisg>
vagrantc: I'm thinking to write a small bounties page, then post it to the MLs for comments, and if they don't like it, we can just delete it
06:23
Is that OK with you guys? sbalneav? stgraber? ogra_? highvoltage? mgariepy?
06:25* highvoltage has been way too uninvolved to have a say but it sounds good
06:25
<vagrantc>
alkisg: sounds feasible
06:26
<alkisg>
Cool, I'll do that today
07:13
How's this? http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Bounties
07:13
(feel free to edit it to correct my lousy English)
07:15
<maldridge>
alkisg: getting desperate?
07:16
and the english is fine, it reads clearly and accurately conveys your intent
07:16
<alkisg>
maldridge: why do you say that? it's one of the most successful open source models, when no companies are involved...
07:16
<maldridge>
"This is an attempt to speed up LTSP development by rewarding the people involved in it. "
07:17
<alkisg>
Yup, LTSP development has stagnated a bit in the recent years
07:17
<maldridge>
it was my understanding that the number involved on the dev side was dwindling
07:19
<alkisg>
True. As usual, if devs have a motivation, they'll work on a project; if not, nope...
07:22
I don't think any developer is payed to work on ltsp anymore, and it would be a shame to kill the project if users are still interested in it
07:27
<vagrantc>
alkisg: thanks for posting the bounties page ... if nothing else, maybe it'll stir some interest
07:27vagrantc has left IRC (vagrantc!~vagrant@unaffiliated/vagrantc, Quit: leaving)
07:30
<maldridge>
I've been poking at getting ltsp running on void
07:30
I'm not sure how "ltsp" my setup is, but it works
07:32
<alkisg>
A very big part of LTSP is reporting bugs to other projects that break netbooting. Netbooted setups that don't use LTSP then benefit from that...
07:32
<maldridge>
indeed
07:32
my distro of choice doesn't netboot by default
07:32
I think I'm the only guy working on it
07:33
<alkisg>
which distro did you say that is?
07:33
<maldridge>
Void Linux
07:33
<alkisg>
Ah, sorry, I should have realized from the "void" you said above
07:33
Doesn't overlay work there in recent kernels?
07:33
<maldridge>
np, its a non-obvious name
07:34
it does, but there's no real process to build out the chroot for void
07:34
<alkisg>
A VM should be fine
07:34
<maldridge>
I don't follow
07:34
<alkisg>
(which reminds me, I should put out a bounty for supporting exposing .vdi files over nbd... :D)
07:34
You should be able to install void in virtualbox, and then install ltsp-client in it, and then netboot the result
07:35
<maldridge>
interesting, I hadn't thought of that
07:35
<alkisg>
ltsp-build-client isn't a necessary step...
07:35
<maldridge>
void uses a progromatic process to build chroots for building packages, I have been using that to build and update chroots
07:37
with that, it is 0130 here and I have class in the morning; 'night all
07:37
<alkisg>
Good night!
