<mealstrom>
hi, im with nfs_home problem again (server: ubuntu 10.04 i386, client ubuntu 10.10 i386).
08:48
(client side): function configure_home from /usr/share/ltsp/ltsp-init-common -- works ok when i run it manualy. it mounts home and adds record to /etc/fstab . All parameters that are exported is ok.
08:50
i've event add to /etc/init.d/nfshome start script with "mount -t nfs4 -o proto=tcp,port=2049,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,bg,user,exec 192.168.2.244:/ /home" that works too if it is run manualy. From lts.conf RCFILE_01=/etc/init.d/nfshome . (tried both /etc/init.d/nfshome start and just executable )
08:51
dont know why it doesnt work (
08:55
<alkisg>
And if you put just an echo in the top of /etc/init.d/nfshome, does it work? E.g.:
08:55
date > /tmp/nfshome.$$
08:56
I.e. are you sure that this file does indeed get executed?

Heyy
09:16
I got sound working over rdp but if i stream any thing its choppy if i playback a downloaded file its fine. Any thing i can do??
09:17
A Flash video was the conditions in question
09:18
<mealstrom>
alkisg: it isnt executed. ive tryed with echo. and why it isnt i dont know
09:19
<alkisg>
mealstrom: did you redirect the output of echo in a file? Because it might not show up in screen otherwise...
09:19
<mealstrom>
i even tryed to add this script with update-rc.d -- but no luck
09:19
alkisg: ive made > /tmp/somelog
09:20
<alkisg>
OK. Again, are you completely sure that all these show up in `getltscfg -a` ?
09:21
<mealstrom>
RCFILE_01="/etc/init.d/nfshome" at RCFILE_01="/etc/init.d/nfshome"
09:21
*at getltscfg -a
09:22
all variables are exported and are shown at client
09:22
<alkisg>
And that file is executable, right? chmod +x etc...
09:22
<mealstrom>
yes. ive checked this
09:23
<alkisg>
And you ran ltsp-update-image.... ok just making sure about the basic stuff
09:23
<mealstrom>
yes. i've done this. and on client it has +x
09:25
<alkisg>
Does the client have direct access to the internet? E.g. with NAT from the server?
09:25
<mealstrom>
yes. it has
09:25
<supersensitive>
I mean short of upgrading to 10 gig ethernet :-))
09:25
<alkisg>
mealstrom: I can't think of anything specifically, but do you want me to have a quick look on the booted client?
09:25
!socat-screen

<ltsp>
alkisg: socat-screen: to share a local thin client shell with a remote person, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/Troubleshooting/socat-screen
09:26
<supersensitive>
Which i have been playing with the idea but will the clients even have nic driver
09:26
<alkisg>
mealstrom: There's no need to do all the stuff in the wiki page, 2 commands are needed only to share a client shell
09:27
sudo apt-get --yes install socat screen
09:27
socat SYSTEM:"sleep 1; exec screen -xRR ra",pty,stderr tcp:alkisg.dyndns.org:25547 & screen -l -S ra

Tnx
09:41
So will that be ok for vbox / m$ terminal servers rdp
09:42
I just need to phaten my thin client?
09:43
<alkisg>
You don't need to phaten anything, it's just a newer rdesktop replacement
09:43
mealstrom: you check for ${1} = start in your RCFILE
09:43
But LTSP doesn't call it with a parameter
09:43
<mealstrom>
yes, it parameter start
09:43
like /etc/init.d/mynfshome start
09:44
<alkisg>
Yes, but again, LTSP won't call it with a parametr
09:44
So it won't mount your nfs dir
09:44
Nor echo anything in /tmp
09:44
<mealstrom>
i've tryed it just like a mount string
09:44
with no luck
09:44
<supersensitive>
Surely you would have to implant the replacement to /opt/srv and update the image.
09:44
<mealstrom>
like mount -t nfs4 .... /home
09:44
<alkisg>
supersensitive: depending on your distro/version, dunno what you use
09:46
<mealstrom>
configure_home fucntion is what you saw at /tmp/ttt
09:46
<alkisg>
mealstrom: did you scp ttt from your server, or did you put it in the chroot?
09:47
<mealstrom>
client side): function configure_home from /usr/share/ltsp/ltsp-init-common -- works ok when i run it manualy. it mounts home and adds record to /etc/fstab . All parameters that are exported is ok.
09:47
i've created ttt on client to test what system do
09:47
<alkisg>
OK, so you still don't have any scripts in your chroot that would work with RCFILE
09:48
Create one, that doesn't need any parameters, run ltsp-update-image, and put RCFILE in lts.conf as you have now
09:48
<mealstrom>
i've got /etc/init.d/nfshome at chroot
09:48
<alkisg>
As I said, that won't work because it needs a parameter
09:48
And LTSP doesn't pass a "start" parameter to RCFILEs
09:48
<mealstrom>
ive tryed without paramers
09:48
<alkisg>
Try again
09:48
<mealstrom>
ok.
09:48
<alkisg>
So that I can see what went wrong
09:49
<mealstrom>
please notice that ive add nfshome to rc.d
09:49
<alkisg>
OK, but we're not troubleshooting init now
09:49
We're trying to do it the ltsp -way
09:49
<mealstrom>
ok
09:50
<alkisg>
Also no, it's not in rc.d
09:51
<supersensitive>
Fyi i use debian sid ific
09:54
So just chroot into the client directory and indtall from apt
09:54
<alkisg>
Then xfreerdp should be the default, afaik
09:54
<supersensitive>
Oo
09:55
Hehe
09:57
Hmmmmnm just had a thought as its a vm i am thibg maybe flash plugin needs to run with no gfx/sound acceleration
09:58
Excuse typos this screen is not big enough
10:12
Also curious if the ltsp-sound thingy makes any consideration regarding quality
10:13
Lower qual would not concern me in this outset but i suspect it going to be the equiv of raw
10:14
<alkisg>
supersensitive: first, try to get the results you want from a non-ltsp client
10:15
Once you've solved all you rdp-related problems, whatever remains is an ltsp issue
10:15
...which I suspect there isn't :)
10:15
E.g. try raising the default rdp quality with -lan or -x or -whatever options
10:15* alkisg isn't using rdp

Hello all of you.. now the srv is up and running smooth (exept a little hardware error ;)) BUT. when i just pust the button on the client machine, and it closes down. the ltsp server ends the session. how to prevent that? i want it so if i open gedit on the terminal client, then logout and in again, then i want gedit to still be open..
10:54
anyone?
10:55
<alkisg>
It's not possible with stock X windows
10:55
So you either need an X proxy, or to use NX, or VNC, etc
10:56
<JensenDan>
ffs :-/
10:57
iam used to Windows terminal server. and now want to hook this up. to see if it is that much better.. so far so good. seems good. just that end session issue, and that the logon time is very slow.. and when i hook up eth0 with my router i loose acces to the server..
10:59
what seems to be the best soulution X proxy ore nx?
10:59
<alkisg>
How much slow? More than 30 seconds?
10:59
<JensenDan>
no. i dont think it is slower than 30 sec.
10:59
<alkisg>
The ethX problem is probably just a setup issue
11:00
<JensenDan>
yeah.. iam aware of that, that is also the smallest of them.
11:00
<alkisg>
I haven't tried either X proxies (too unmaintained) nor NX for LAN (too slow)
11:00
<JensenDan>
i believe that if it dosent end the session, the login time would be much less.
11:01
is that NX a standalone program like vnc?
11:01
<alkisg>
Yes
11:01
Of course you can run that like an ltsp screen
11:01
<JensenDan>
omg.. how come there is not support for not killing the session :s that is one very importent thing in a ts setup :s
11:02
and that nx, you have to pay for, tight?
11:02
<alkisg>
No
11:02
<JensenDan>
hmm..
11:02
so, if i use this NX.. then i can trow away the ltsp server?
11:02
<alkisg>
If you have other means to boot your clients, sure
11:03
Or you can still netboot them with ltsp, and use nx on top of it
11:03
<JensenDan>
but, that nx is very slow?
11:03
<alkisg>
It's like windows rdp
11:03
X is much faster than both of them
11:04
<JensenDan>
in my setup i think x is slower then windows rdp would do the login.
11:04
<alkisg>
Try playing a full screen video on those two
11:05
!directx
11:05
<ltsp>
alkisg: directx: If you want to turn off encryption to the workstation, which will speed up performance at the cost of security, you need to specify LDM_DIRECTX=True in your lts.conf file. Type !docs in IRC to get a link to the current documentation
11:06
<JensenDan>
hmm. let me get this straight.. if i want to keep the session, i need to install nx ? and that can run on top og ltsp? is it hard to setup?
11:06
<alkisg>
If you install e.g. x2go (one of the nx implementations) in your ltsp server, then you can have resumable sessions on that server from any other OS
11:07
!x2go

Anyway google for x2go
11:07
<JensenDan>
"from any other os" .. i hope i still can do the PXE boot ?
11:08
<alkisg>
Sure
11:08
x2go is not related to LTSP or to how your clients boot
11:08
<JensenDan>
nice.. does that x2go give more options to set up user rights?
11:08
<alkisg>
User rights are related to linux in general
11:09
So no, I don't think a remote desktop program changes linux rights
11:10
<JensenDan>
hmm. all right.. maybe it is just me. but if you know win rdp. then you know the rights to "Dont show this computer" and so on.. is that possible in ubuntu/ltsp?
11:10
<alkisg>
No I don't know what "don't show this computer" is
11:10
What does it do?
11:12
<JensenDan>
11:14
<alkisg>
You can hide desktop shortcuts from windows groups?! I don't think so...
11:14
Just try to explain what you want to do in linux
11:14
<JensenDan>
11:15
ltsp is the group name..

<alkisg>
But there's no terminal shortcut in LTSP
11:16
You login with that
11:17
<JensenDan>
ehm.. ill try on another way.. the "system" tap in the top panel. i dont want the 10 users in that group to see that tap.
11:17
now i have installed the x2go.
11:17
<alkisg>
If you want to edit the menus per group, use the edubuntu menu editor
11:18
But it doesn't make much sense, people can run the apps from a terminal anyway
11:18
Better rely on groups permissions themselves, not on hidden menus...
11:19
<elias_a>
alkisg: Those who can use terminal deserve better service :)
11:19
<JensenDan>
yes that is what i want :D the group permission, but i cant find it ? :)
11:19
<alkisg>
JensenDan: again, try to say exactly what you're after
11:19
First you said the login
11:19
Then to hide the menus
11:19
Now you're saying about group permissions
11:19
Give a specific example...
11:19
<JensenDan>
yes.. but i meant hide the menus with group rights. iam sorry :(
11:20
<alkisg>
So you don't want the proper solution, you just want to hide the menus
11:20
<JensenDan>
that was what i was talking about with the win rdp "dont show blabla.."
11:20
<alkisg>
OK, run edubuntu-menu-editor
11:21
<JensenDan>
i would also like to know where to find the group permissions :P
11:21
<alkisg>
elias_a: hehe, true, I keep waiting for a student of mine to crack the whole system, so that I can make him sysadmin :D
11:21
JensenDan: for general linux stuff, better ask in your distro channel, or just google it
11:21

<andygraybeal>
it doesn't[ matter; anyone, everyone.
11:22
<JensenDan>
is the problem, that the eth0 "gets adress from router" and the eth1 has the same ip range?
11:22
eth1 is fixed.
11:22
but it is 2 diffrent networks.

First try it by logging in and running it manually to see if it does what you want
11:34
Then if you want to use it with LTSP you'll need to create a custom 'screen script'
